Mercury Sextile Uranus: Inventive Ideas That Need an Outlet

← Back to Aspects

Mercury sextile Uranus means the two planets were between 54° and 66° apart at birth; the sextile has a 6° orb, narrower than the 8° used for the other major aspects. Astrologers usually read it as an open door between ordinary thinking and the inventive, rule-bending side of the mind. The door is there, but you have to walk through it: sextiles tend to reward people who actually use them.

Across all 73,049 sampled noon charts (one per day from 1900 to 2099, Greenwich), the sextile appeared on 6.8% of days, about one sampled day in 15.

What people with this sextile often recognise

Finding the workaround. When a process is clumsy, you may spot the shortcut before anyone else has finished complaining about it.

Learning by tinkering. New apps, tools and methods are less intimidating when you can poke at them. Reading the manual comes later, if at all.

Making odd ideas sound reasonable. This is one of the gentler Uranus contacts for communication. Unusual views can come out in a way that invites curiosity rather than pushback.

Conversation as a spark. Talking with someone from a completely different field can set off a run of ideas you would not have reached alone.

Why it needs using

Easy aspects are easy to ignore. Without some outlet (a project, a problem to solve, a group that welcomes new ideas) the inventive streak may stay a private hobby or a habit of daydreaming about how things could be better. The growth edge is practical: pick one idea and test it in the real world, then notice what you learn from the parts that don't work.

Two windows a year, sometimes more

The Sun passes both 60° points from Uranus every year, and Mercury travels close to the Sun, so the sextile tends to come in two windows a year: one with Mercury ahead of Uranus in the zodiac and one with Mercury behind. In our sample, 145 of the 200 years had exactly two noon windows; the rest had three to six, because a Mercury retrograde can break one window into pieces or bring Mercury back into orb.

On sextile days the Sun was 26.7° to 92.8° from Uranus, and Uranus was direct on every one of them. On 17.9% of those days the Sun was sextile Uranus as well.

The long sextile of 2020

Summer 2020 shows how long a Mercury retrograde can hold this aspect in place. With Mercury in Cancer and Uranus in Taurus:

  • At London noon the sextile was in orb on every day from 31 May to 27 July, 58 days in a row.
  • It was exact three times: on 5 June (Mercury 8°46' Cancer, Uranus 8°46' Taurus), late on 30 June, and on 22 July.
  • Mercury turned retrograde around 18 June near 14°45' Cancer and direct around 12 July near 5°29' Cancer, never leaving the 6° orb in between.
  • At noon on 1 July the Sun was sextile Uranus within 0.19° and conjunct Mercury within 0.53°, so all three were tied together.

Compare a window with no retrograde inside it: in the sample those lasted from a single day to 16 days at noon, typically about 8.

Signs and elements

Sextiles between signs usually join fire with air or earth with water. The 2020 example is a water-earth sextile (Cancer and Taurus). On 10.0% of sampled sextile days the aspect was out of sign, joining signs that don't normally sextile each other because one planet sat near a sign boundary.

Checking your chart

The wheel draws a sextile as a blue dashed line. A solid blue line is a trine, so the dash pattern matters here. Then check the planet table: the gap between ☿ and ♅ should be between 54° and 66°.

The narrower orb also matters when the birth time is missing. The calculator still draws this line on a no-time chart, using local noon as the reference, and on 17.2% of sampled sextile days the noon orb was within 1° of the 6° limit. If your gap is close to 54° or 66°, the aspect could depend on the time of day. The free birth chart lets you enter an exact time if you can find one.
