Saturn Square the Lunar Nodes: Pressure at the Bendings

← Back to Aspects

You have this square if, at your birth, the gap between Saturn and the North Node was between 82° and 98°. The South Node lies exactly opposite, so the same gap applies to it and Saturn squares the whole axis; on the wheel that shows as a pair of solid red lines leaving ♄ for N.Node and S.Node. Traditional astrologers called the two points midway between the Nodes the bendings. Saturn here is neither the familiar habit nor the growth direction. It stands off the axis, and many readings cast it as the test of commitment, timing or structure that has to be passed whenever the person moves between the two ends.

The square is more common than either conjunction. Of the 73,049 daily noon charts for 1900 to 2099, 6,680 had it (9.1%, about one in 11), in 36 windows. Saturn reaches one bending or the other about every 5.7 years, half of its 11.4-year cycle with the Node.

Common interpretations

Responsibility at the crossroads. A common description is someone for whom every change of direction comes with a duty attached: a job, a family obligation, a standard they feel they must meet first.

A brake on both directions. Saturn slows things down. Square the axis, it can show up as hesitation to repeat the old pattern and equal hesitation to try the new one, until the person decides on their own terms.

Structure as the bridge. Read more constructively, Saturn at the bendings is the skill of building the routines, plans or boundaries that let both ends of the axis work together.

Lessons about timing. Some astrologers associate this square with a feeling that opportunities arrive either too early or too late, and with learning, over the years, when to commit.

These are possibilities rather than fixed outcomes. The Nodes count for less than the planets, and Saturn's sign, house and complete aspect pattern carry more weight. For background on the bendings, see the Sun's square to the Nodes.

Sextile and trine contacts

The softer angles are linked, but only one way. A sextile to one Node (54° to 66° under the 6° sextile orb) always puts Saturn 114° to 126° from the opposite Node, inside the 8° trine orb, so every sextile comes with a trine and the chart draws both. The reverse does not hold: a wide trine at 112° to 114° or 126° to 128° can appear with no sextile. Sextile dates, each with its paired trine, numbered 10,054 in the sample (13.8%), in 79 windows. Counting every trine gives 13,234 dates (18.1%), since 3,180 wide trine dates had no sextile. It is generally read as an easier, more cooperative link between Saturn's discipline and the nodal axis, with the Node that Saturn sextiles taken as the one that rewards deliberate effort. It has no separate page here; the readings follow from the two conjunction pages and this one.

Long windows and short ones

The 36 windows split evenly. Eighteen lasted 265 to 281 days, and each contained a complete Saturn retrograde season of 134 to 141 days, from one station to the other. The other 18 were short: 17 forward passes of 92 to 112 days without a single retrograde day, plus a 38-day retrograde brush in late 2061 just ahead of the 2062 pass. Over all square dates Saturn was retrograde 37.7% of the time, close to its 36.4% average.

The two kinds also differ in eclipses. NASA's eclipse catalogue for 1901 to 2099 puts four or five eclipses in every long window and at most two in a short one. Inside the long windows the eclipses cluster in the stretches where Saturn moves forward: with Saturn retrograde, the Sun came within the 18.6° eclipse limit of a Node on just 2.7% of square dates, compared with 33.0% while Saturn was direct. The geometry is the same as for Jupiter and is set out in Jupiter square the Lunar Nodes.

Stationary at the bending: 1948

In three windows Saturn stayed within 1° of the exact square for more than two months, because its slow retrograde motion matched the Node's. The longest came in 1948: from 20 January to 23 April 1948, 95 days, Saturn in Leo held its square to Nodes in Taurus and Scorpio. The window as a whole ran from 22 September 1947 to 23 June 1948, and the calculator has the square exact on 28 November 1947 (22°38' Leo against 22°36' Taurus) and again, with Saturn retrograde, on 28 February 1948 (17°43' for both) and 1 April 1948 (15°58'). Pluto, also in Leo, was within 8° of Saturn on every date of the window. NASA lists four eclipses inside it, from an annular solar eclipse on 12 November 1947 to another on 9 May 1948. The other two cases were 6 April to 13 June 1982 (Saturn in Libra) and 9 January to 21 March 2039 (Saturn in Virgo). In 2039 Saturn hovered within a degree for those ten weeks and made the exact square only on 5 June.

2022: Saturn in Aquarius, Uranus on the North Node

The 2022 window ran from 27 February to 30 November 2022, with Saturn in Aquarius square a Taurus North Node and a Scorpio South Node, exact on 21 April at 23°40' Aquarius against 23°41' Taurus. From 7 May Uranus was within 8° of the North Node as well, and on 167 dates of the window, from 17 June to 30 November, Saturn squared Uranus at the same time. Births in that stretch have Saturn at a bending while squaring a Uranus on the North Node. NASA lists four eclipses in the window: partial solar on 30 April and 25 October, total lunar on 16 May and on 8 November at 10:59 Universal Time. At London noon on 8 November the calculator has the Moon at 16°31' Taurus, 0.4° from Uranus, with Saturn at 18°49' Aquarius squaring the Moon, the Sun, Uranus and both Nodes.

Aquarius has Uranus as its modern ruler and Saturn as its traditional ruler. Taurus is ruled by Venus. Scorpio has Pluto as its modern ruler and Mars as its traditional ruler. The Taurus-Scorpio axis covers that nodal pairing.

The square after that is the short kind: 13 February to 16 May 2028, with no eclipse, exact on 2 April at 28°39' Aries against 28°37' Capricorn. During it the North Node moves from Aquarius into Capricorn (on 7 March in the calculator's London charts), so throughout the window it sits in a sign Saturn rules, as the ruler of Capricorn and the traditional ruler of Aquarius.

Finding the square on your wheel

The square shows as the two red lines from ♄ described above. In the planet table, the distance from Saturn to the North Node, measured either way round the zodiac, should come to 82° to 98°. The signs usually share a modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable), yet on 15.5% of sampled square dates a sign boundary broke that rule, so trust the degrees. Saturn roughly 90° further along the zodiac than the North Node marks the northern bending, which applied on 56.7% of square dates.

Without a recorded birth time, Saturn and the Nodes are computed for local noon, which serves as a reference and not as an estimate of your hour. Saturn barely moves in a day, so only 1.1% of square dates sat at a window edge where the hour could change the result. For houses you need the time. Try it with the free birth chart.
