Intercepted Signs in Astrology: Signs That Never Touch a House Cusp
Updated October 21, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
An intercepted sign is a sign that lies entirely inside one house. The whole sign lies between two successive house cusps, with no cusp anywhere in its 30°. In the simplest case the house begins in the sign just before it and ends in the sign just after it, but a very wide house can enclose two or more signs. Interceptions are a feature of house systems with unequal houses, such as Placidus, the default on Astrologist.com. This page explains the geometry, shows how to spot an interception from a list of cusps, and sets out the different ways astrologers read one, without choosing between them.
On Astrologist.com: the free birth chart draws the house cusps on the wheel but does not label interceptions or print a cusp table. You can identify an interception from the sign of each cusp, taken from a numeric cusp source as described in how to find your house cusps. Houses, and so interceptions, need a reliable birth time.
How to spot one
Write down the sign of each of the twelve cusps. Any sign that does not appear on the list is intercepted, and it sits inside the house whose cusp comes just before it.
Lotte, the fictional example from the cusp guide (Utrecht, 27 August 1991, 06:55 local summer time, Placidus), has these cusp signs:
| Cusp | Sign | Cusp | Sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4°44' Virgo | 7 | 4°44' Pisces |
| 2 | 25°04' Virgo | 8 | 25°04' Pisces |
| 3 | 21°46' Libra | 9 | 21°46' Aries |
| 4 | 26°07' Scorpio | 10 | 26°07' Taurus |
| 5 | 4°37' Capricorn | 11 | 4°37' Cancer |
| 6 | 8°05' Aquarius | 12 | 8°05' Leo |
Sagittarius and Gemini are missing. Her 4th house runs from 26°07' Scorpio to 4°37' Capricorn, 38.49° in all, and contains the whole of Sagittarius. Her 10th house runs from 26°07' Taurus to 4°37' Cancer and contains the whole of Gemini. Sagittarius is intercepted in her 4th house, Gemini in her 10th.
A house has to be wider than 30° to hold a whole sign, which is why interceptions belong with the uneven house sizes explained in why Placidus houses differ in size.
Why interceptions come in opposite pairs
In Placidus, as calculated on this site, every cusp is exactly opposite the cusp six houses on: same degree and minute, opposite sign. So if a sign lies wholly inside one house, the opposite sign lies wholly inside the opposite house. Lotte's pair shows it: Sagittarius in the 4th, Gemini, its opposite sign, in the 10th.
How many pairs a chart has varies. Sem, a second fictional example born the same day in Utrecht at 17:12 local time, has two:
- Capricorn inside his 1st house (25°13' Sagittarius to 9°48' Aquarius) and Cancer inside his 7th;
- Aries inside his 3rd house (27°57' Pisces to 0°35' Taurus) and Libra inside his 9th.
Further north, one house can hold two whole intercepted signs. In a chart for Helsinki (60.17° N) at 20:00 local time on the same date, the 1st house runs from 7°31' Aquarius to 2°32' Taurus, 85.02° wide, and contains all of Pisces and all of Aries; Virgo and Libra sit inside the 7th. Many charts have no interception at all.
The counterpart: a sign on two cusps
There are twelve cusps and twelve signs. If one sign gets no cusp, some other sign must get more than one. Lotte's missing Sagittarius and Gemini are balanced by Virgo on her 1st and 2nd cusps and Pisces on her 7th and 8th. Sem's four intercepted signs are balanced by Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio and Sagittarius, each on two cusps. The number of intercepted signs always equals the number of extra cusps. The same sign on two house cusps covers that side of the picture.
A cusp at 0° is a cusp in that sign
Sem's 4th cusp is at 0°35' Taurus. That is a cusp in Taurus, so Taurus is not intercepted, while Aries, wholly inside the 3rd house, is. The same holds for a cusp at exactly 0°00' of a sign: it belongs to that sign, and its arrival does not mean a sign has been skipped.
Close to a sign boundary, a minute of clock time can change the picture. The calculator gives these 4th cusps for the same date and place:
| Local time | 4th cusp | Intercepted signs |
|---|---|---|
| 17:09 | 29°48' Aries | Cancer and Capricorn |
| 17:10 | 0°04' Taurus | Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn |
At 17:09 Aries still holds the 4th cusp. One minute later the cusp has moved into Taurus, and Aries and its opposite sign Libra become intercepted. An interception that depends on a cusp within a few minutes of arc of a sign boundary is only as reliable as the birth time behind it, and display rounding can also hide which side of the boundary a cusp is on. How accurate a birth time needs to be shows how to test a time window.
How often interceptions appear
The share depends strongly on latitude. For one sampled day (27 August 1991, a chart every 4 minutes, 360 moments, longitude 5.12° E), the share of sampled moments with at least one interception was:
| Latitude | Moments with an interception |
|---|---|
| 0° | 14.4% |
| 20° N | 26.4% |
| 40° N | 57.2% |
| 52.09° N (Utrecht) | 80.0% |
| 60° N | 89.4% |
| 65° N | 95.3% |
| 66.00° N | 96.4% |
| 66.01° N (Equal houses) | 0% |
These are shares of sampled moments in time, not the share of people born with an interception; births are not spread evenly over the clock or the map.
Why Equal houses have none
Equal houses give every house exactly 30°, so each cusp carries the Ascendant's degree into the next sign. Every sign receives exactly one cusp, and no sign can be intercepted. On Astrologist.com that is the case for any chart at an absolute latitude greater than 66° north or south; a chart at exactly 66° still uses Placidus. Other house systems can produce different interceptions from Placidus for the same birth data, so an interception belongs to a chart calculated in a particular house system rather than to the sky alone.
How astrologers read an intercepted sign
In the usual cusp-ruler method, a house takes its ruler from the sign on its cusp (see house rulers explained). An intercepted sign has no cusp, so it supplies no cusp rulership through that sign. Its planetary ruler may still rule houses through another sign that does fall on a cusp: Mercury rules Lotte's intercepted Gemini, and it is still the cusp ruler of her 1st and 2nd houses through Virgo. Lotte's 4th house has a Scorpio cusp, with Pluto as its modern ruler and Mars as its traditional ruler; Jupiter, the ruler of the intercepted Sagittarius, is not her 4th-house cusp ruler.
Astrologers handle this in different ways:
- As an added ruler. Some include the intercepted sign's ruler as a further ruler of the house that contains it, alongside the cusp ruler. For Lotte that would add Jupiter to the reading of the 4th house.
- As themes that take longer to surface. Some read the intercepted sign, and any planet in it, as themes that may feel less directly available or may take longer to find expression. Sem's Uranus and Neptune in intercepted Capricorn in the 1st house, and his Moon at 0°06' Aries in the 3rd, would be read this way by those astrologers.
- As a by-product of the house system. Others give interception little separate weight, noting that it depends on the house system and the birth latitude and disappears in Equal houses.
These are different views held by practising astrologers. Astrologist.com does not rank them. The house-ruler guides on this site work from the sign on each cusp; how much weight to add for an intercepted sign's ruler is left open. If one of these readings fits your experience, treat it as a pattern to explore rather than a fixed verdict.
