How to Find Your North Node: Chart Reading and Sign Dates

Updated October 21, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Planets

The quickest way to find your North Node is to run your birth details through the free birth chart and look for N.Node in the planet list under the wheel. It shows a degree, minutes and a sign glyph. Your South Node is listed right beside it as S.Node, at the same degree in the opposite sign.

If you only want the sign, you do not even need a chart. The Nodes move slowly, so a birth date is enough for almost everyone. The table further down gives every Mean Node sign change from 1939 to 2031.

Reading the Nodes on the free chart

Three places on the chart carry nodal information.

The planet list. Each row shows a glyph, a name, the position in degrees and minutes, and the sign symbol. The Nodes appear as ☊ N.Node and ☋ S.Node. Unlike Mercury or Saturn, they never carry an R marker, even though Mean Node motion is backwards. That is intentional: a condition every chart shares should not look like a personal quirk.

The wheel. Both Node glyphs appear on the wheel at their zodiac positions. If you entered a birth time, the numbered house sections show which house each Node falls in.

The aspect lines. Lines between a Node and a planet mean the two are in one of the five major aspects, using the same flat orbs as every other point. There is never a line between the two Nodes themselves, because their opposition is part of how they are defined. Lines from the Moon to the Nodes need a birth time, since the Moon can enter and leave a Node's orb within a single day; Moon conjunct the North Node shows how much the hour matters.

The method line on the chart reads "Mean Lunar Node". That is the calculation the whole site uses.

Do you need a birth time?

For the sign, almost never. The Mean Node moves about 3 arcminutes a day, so the time of day only matters if you were born right on a sign change date. If you leave the birth time blank, the calculator still works out the nodal signs from an internal noon reference. It does not treat noon as your birth time.

For the house, yes. Without a birth time there is no Ascendant and no house cusps, so the chart shows no houses and no Node house placement. A guessed time can easily move the Nodes into a different house. If you know your time only roughly, the sign reading is safe and the house reading is provisional. What a chart shows without a birth time covers the rest of the unknown-time display.

Born above 66° latitude, north or south? The chart switches from Placidus to Equal houses measured from the Ascendant and says so in a banner. Your Node signs are unaffected, but the house can differ from what a Placidus chart would show.

Mean North Node sign dates, 1939 to 2031

These dates come from the same Mean Node formula the calculator uses. Change dates are given in Universal Time. Because the Node moves backwards, it enters each sign at 29° and leaves at 0°.

If you were born on a date where one period ends and the next begins, or within a day of it, the table cannot settle it. Use the chart, which calculates the exact position for your time and place.

The rhythm is easy to see: about 18 to 19 months per sign, and the same sign coming back roughly every 18.6 years. That is why classmates often share a North Node sign, while siblings born two years apart never do.

When another site gives a different sign

Three things usually explain a mismatch.

Mean Node versus True Node. Many apps default to the True Node, which swings back and forth around the Mean Node by up to about two degrees. On roughly one birth date in thirty the two land in different signs, almost always near a sign boundary. Neither answer is wrong; they follow different conventions. The details are in Mean Node vs True Node.

A sidereal chart. Vedic astrology calls the Nodes Rahu (North) and Ketu (South) and places them in the sidereal zodiac, which currently sits about 24 degrees behind the Tropical one. That often puts Rahu one sign earlier. Astrologist.com uses the Tropical zodiac only.

A time zone slip. If a site stored your birth time in the wrong zone, the Node sign rarely changes, but the house can.

What to read once you know it

Start with the sign axis. Each of the six pages covers both directions:

Then, if you have a birth time, add the house. The Houses library has all twelve North Node and twelve South Node house pages. For the background on what the axis means and how aspects to it are read, see what the North and South Node mean.

Once you have the sign, house and any planets close to the Nodes, Ask the Astrologist can help you put the pieces together using your own chart. Other chart points are covered in the Planets section.
