What Your Uranus Sign Means: Change, Invention and Freedom
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Uranus was the first planet found with a telescope, spotted by William Herschel in 1781. Astrologers adopted it as the planet of surprise, innovation, rebellion and sudden insight. Your Uranus sign suggests the area of experience where your age group tended to expect change, and the kind of freedom it was inclined to defend.
The individual pages for each sign are on the Uranus signs hub. This overview explains how to read any of them without overstating what a seven-year placement can say about one person.
Seven years at a time
Uranus circles the zodiac in roughly 84 years, so it averages about seven years per sign. Its ingresses are often messy: the planet may enter a new sign, retreat into the old one during a retrograde, then return. In recent decades it was in Aries from 2010 or 2011 to 2018 or 2019, then in Taurus until 2025 or 2026, with back-and-forth months at each boundary.
That makes a Uranus sign a mid-sized cohort marker. People born a few years apart usually share it; people a decade apart usually do not. If you were born in a crossover year, see slow-planet sign changes and your birth year.
What the sign tends to colour
Ask a Uranus question of each sign: what does this cohort want to shake loose?
- In Aries, independence of action and the right to start things without permission.
- In Taurus, money, resources, food and the physical environment.
- In Gemini, information, media and how people talk to each other.
- In Cancer, family forms and ideas of home.
- In Leo, self-expression, creativity and celebrity.
- In Virgo, work, health and everyday systems.
- In Libra, partnership norms and justice.
- In Scorpio, intimacy, shared resources and taboo.
- In Sagittarius, belief, education and travel.
- In Capricorn, institutions and authority.
- In Aquarius, community, technology and collective ideals.
- In Pisces, spirituality, art and the line between imagination and reality.
These sketches describe the collective climate astrologers associate with each period. They do not mean every member of that cohort is a rebel in that area.
Rulership
Aquarius is ruled by Uranus in modern astrology, with Saturn as its traditional ruler. Both names matter when you read an Aquarius placement. Uranus in Aquarius covers the cohort born with Uranus there, and modern and traditional rulers explains the two schemes.
Making Uranus personal
The sign is a shared backdrop. Uranus becomes individual through:
House, if your birth time is known. It suggests the area of life where you may prefer unconventional choices or experience abrupt shifts. For example, Uranus in the 11th house leans toward friendships and groups. No birth time means no house reading.
Aspects to personal planets or the Ascendant. Uranus conjunct the Moon or square Venus is usually read as a far more personal signature than the sign. Astrologist.com lists the five major aspects only.
Chart rulership. If you have Aquarius rising, Uranus is your modern chart ruler, alongside Saturn.
The broader comparison of all three outer planets is in outer-planet signs and generations, and Pluto's much slower story in what your Pluto sign means.
Aspects between Mercury and Uranus are among the most personal of these links. Mercury stays close to the Sun, so whether you have one depends on the time of year you were born, not only the year. A Mercury-Uranus conjunction usually falls in your Uranus sign, while Mercury opposite Uranus only forms while Uranus is retrograde.
The midlife echo
Around ages 40 to 42, transiting Uranus opposes its natal position. Many astrologers treat that as a classic restlessness period. Astrologist.com does not compute transits; the idea is explained in the Uranus opposition.
