Which Zodiac Sign Is the Rarest? Measured by Sun-Sign Season Length
Updated October 28, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
The short answer: this measurement cannot tell you which zodiac sign is rarest among people. How many people are born under each Sun sign depends on when births happen through the year, and that is outside anything a chart calculation can measure. What it can measure is how long the Sun spends in each sign. By that measure Capricorn has the shortest Sun-sign season, about 29 days 11 hours, and Cancer the longest, about 31 days 11 hours.
The results in brief:
- The twelve Sun-sign seasons differ by about two days. Capricorn averaged 29.44 days, Cancer 31.45 days.
- The six shortest seasons run in a row from Libra to Pisces (late September to March), and the six longest from Aries to Virgo (March to September).
- Each sign's season length barely changes from year to year: for every sign, its shortest and longest season in the window were at most about an hour apart.
- The pattern comes from Earth's orbit. Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, when the Sun appears to move fastest, and farthest in early July, when it moves slowest.
- Shares of time, not of people. Capricorn's season is 8.06% of the year and Cancer's 8.61%. Nothing here says Capricorns are rarer than anyone else.
Calculator note: the free birth chart shows the Sun's sign for a given birth date, time and place. It does not calculate season lengths, and Ask the Astrologist does not compute these base rates either.
Why this is not a count of people
If births were spread perfectly evenly through the year, a longer Sun-sign season would hold slightly more birthdays. Births are not spread evenly: they vary by month, by country and by decade, for reasons that have nothing to do with astrology. The site has no birth records, and the chart routines do not model them, so this page never claims which sign is rarest among people. A shorter season is a fact about the sky's timing, not a statement that a sign is special, scarce or different in meaning.
How it was measured
The measurement is one offline run of the routines behind the free chart, code version 0b3a73e. For every year from 1920 through 2059 and each of the twelve signs, the moment the calculated Sun reached 0° of the sign was found and refined to under a second. These are the same 1,680 sign changes used on born on the cusp. One extra change, the start of Aquarius in January 2060, was calculated only to close the last Capricorn season of 2059; it is not part of the 140-year window.
A season is the time from the Sun entering a sign to the Sun entering the next one. Each sign has 140 complete seasons in the window, one per year it began. Dates after publication are computed positions, not forecasts.
How long each Sun-sign season lasts
| Sign | Average season | Shortest to longest (days) | Share of the year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 30 d 11 h | 30.44–30.49 | 8.34% |
| Taurus | 30 d 23 h | 30.95–30.99 | 8.48% |
| Gemini | 31 d 8 h | 31.32–31.35 | 8.58% |
| Cancer (longest) | 31 d 11 h | 31.45–31.45 | 8.61% |
| Leo | 31 d 7 h | 31.28–31.30 | 8.57% |
| Virgo | 30 d 22 h | 30.88–30.92 | 8.46% |
| Libra | 30 d 9 h | 30.36–30.41 | 8.32% |
| Scorpio | 29 d 21 h | 29.88–29.91 | 8.19% |
| Sagittarius | 29 d 13 h | 29.54–29.56 | 8.09% |
| Capricorn (shortest) | 29 d 11 h | 29.44–29.45 | 8.06% |
| Aquarius | 29 d 14 h | 29.58–29.60 | 8.10% |
| Pisces | 29 d 23 h | 29.94–29.98 | 8.20% |
Hours are rounded to the nearest whole hour. The share of the year is each sign's average season divided by the twelve averages added together, which came to 365.2428 days. From shortest to longest the order is Capricorn, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Scorpio, Pisces, Libra, Aries, Virgo, Taurus, Leo, Gemini, Cancer.
Why the seasons differ
Earth's orbit is a slightly stretched ellipse. Earth is nearest the Sun in early January and moves fastest along its orbit then, so from Earth the Sun appears to move fastest through the zodiac around that time. In early July Earth is farthest away and slowest, so the Sun appears to move slowest.
The signs the Sun crosses around the turn of the year, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius, are therefore crossed fastest, and those around midsummer, Gemini, Cancer and Leo, slowest. Every sign is the same 30° wide; only the speed of the crossing changes. This is geometry, and it says nothing about the nature of any sign.
The point of fastest motion also drifts very slowly over centuries, so the exact order could shift over much longer spans. Within 1920–2059 it was steady: no sign's shortest and longest season were more than about an hour apart.
A second check: counting noon dates
As a separate sampling check, the free chart's routines were also run for London at 12:00 local clock time on every date from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2059, 51,135 dates, and each date was assigned the Sun's sign at noon. That is a coarser method, because the date on which the Sun changes sign holds two signs and the noon reading gives it all to one of them.
| Sign | Noon dates | Share of 51,135 |
|---|---|---|
| Capricorn | 4,123 | 8.06% |
| Sagittarius | 4,137 | 8.09% |
| Aquarius | 4,141 | 8.10% |
| Scorpio | 4,182 | 8.18% |
| Pisces | 4,198 | 8.21% |
| Libra | 4,253 | 8.32% |
| Aries | 4,268 | 8.35% |
| Virgo | 4,326 | 8.46% |
| Taurus | 4,338 | 8.48% |
| Leo | 4,381 | 8.57% |
| Gemini | 4,383 | 8.57% |
| Cancer | 4,405 | 8.61% |
The noon count puts the twelve signs in exactly the same order as the exact season lengths, from Capricorn up to Cancer. Leo and Gemini are only two dates apart in this count, a much coarser separation than their exact average seasons (31.29 and 31.33 days), which is why the noon count is not used for the answer.
The exact season lengths above are the answer on this page; the noon count is only a cross-check.
Reading the result sensibly
A longer or shorter Sun-sign season does not make a sign stronger, weaker, luckier or more unusual in meaning. It does not change compatibility, health, money or future events, and it does not tell you how many people share your sign.
