Moon Opposite Venus: Balancing Your Needs and Your Affections

Moon opposite Venus means the Moon and Venus were roughly across the zodiac from each other at your birth: at least 172° apart, which is within the 8° orb of an exact 180° opposition. Astrologers tend to read it as a pull between two good things: what makes you feel safe and what you find attractive or enjoyable. They don't always point the same way. Much of the work of this aspect is learning to hold both, instead of swinging from one to the other.

It turned up on 4.4% of days between 1900 and 2099 when we checked the noon chart for each day.

The basic tension

The Moon describes emotional needs: comfort, belonging, the conditions under which you can relax. Venus describes attraction, pleasure, taste and what you value. In an opposition the two sit on opposite sides of the chart, and each can make the other feel out of reach.

A few ways that might show up:

  • being drawn to people or situations that are exciting but don't feel safe, and finding the safe ones a little flat
  • giving lots of care while privately wanting to be adored, or the reverse
  • moods that rise and fall with how a relationship is going
  • spending, decorating or treating yourself as a way of soothing feelings, then wondering whether it helped

These are possibilities to check against your own life. Plenty of people with this aspect recognise only one of them, or none.

In relationships

Oppositions are often experienced through other people. With this one, a partner or close friend may seem to carry either the Venus side (charm, fun, beauty) or the Moon side (care, steadiness, home), while you hold the other. That can be a workable division of labour. It can also turn into frustration if you start to feel you're only allowed one half.

Some astrologers frame this more simply: you may learn what you need by noticing what you are drawn to, and what you are drawn to by noticing what you need.

Strengths

The opposition builds awareness. People with it are often good at seeing both sides of a relational question, sensing what others want, and recognising when comfort and desire have drifted apart. Many have a real talent for hospitality or for making art that speaks to feeling.

The growth edge

From an evolutionary point of view, the aim is integration rather than choosing a winner. That might mean naming your needs directly instead of hoping a partner guesses them, or letting a stable relationship also be a pleasurable one. When that balance clicks, the aspect can describe someone unusually attuned to both closeness and delight.

Always near a Full Moon

Venus never gets more than about 47° from the Sun. If the Moon is opposite Venus, it must therefore be far from the Sun too. Across every Moon-Venus opposition day in our 1900 to 2099 sample, the Moon was between about 125° and 180° from the Sun. That means this aspect only occurs between the gibbous phases on either side of a Full Moon, including the Full Moon itself.

An example: noon in London on 23 August 1986. The Moon was at 16°02' Aries and Venus at 16°01' Libra, an exact opposition. The Moon was 134° from the Sun, a waning gibbous Moon a few days past full. Venus was also in Libra, a sign it rules, which tends to make the Venus side of the aspect especially vivid. The Sun opposite Moon page covers Full Moon births in their own right.

Birth time and the Moon

The Moon moved between 11.3° and 15.8° a day in our checks, so a Moon aspect can come and go within a day. In the August 1986 example the aspect actually lasted the whole calendar day: the orb was 5.7° at 00:30 and 5.6° at 23:30. That's the exception rather than the rule. On days when the opposition is less exact at noon, the time decides it.

When the birth time is unknown, the free birth chart draws no Moon aspect lines at all, because the Moon's degree isn't reliable enough. Reading a chart without a birth time explains how to work around that.

Checking your chart

An opposition appears on the wheel as a red dashed line, and here it will cut right across the centre between ☽ and ♀. To confirm, read both degrees from the planet table and check that the gap is within 8° of 180°.
