Moon Trine Mercury: An Easy Line Between Mood and Mind

← Back to Aspects

When the Moon and Mercury are between 112° and 128° apart in a birth chart, they form a trine. Trines are usually read as the most relaxed of the major aspects, and this one links emotional instinct with the part of you that observes, talks and learns. Feelings tend to get translated into language without much strain, and ideas often carry a bit of warmth with them.

It turned up on 9.0% of the sampled days in our 1900 to 2099 noon charts (73,049 of them, one per day, cast for Greenwich), around one sampled day in eleven.

A reading of the trine

People with this aspect often come across as easy to talk to. There's a sense that they'll understand what you mean even if you say it badly. That may come from an instinct for the emotional side of a conversation: what someone needs to hear first, when to joke, when to leave a silence alone.

It can also help with learning. Information that's connected to a feeling, a story or a person tends to stay put, so this trine is sometimes linked with a good memory for anecdotes and for the way things were said. Some people with it are natural storytellers. Others are simply good at explaining a hard subject to a nervous beginner.

Inside, the trine may make moods easier to read. You might be able to say "I'm anxious about tomorrow" rather than feeling vaguely wrong all evening.

The trouble with smooth

Ease has its own blind spots. A person with this trine can be so good at making things sound fine that a real problem never gets named. Charm in conversation can stand in for honesty. And because talking about feelings comes easily, the trine may not push anyone to grow the way a square does. It works best when it's put to use on something difficult rather than saved for pleasant chat.

Between the quarters and the Full Moon

Mercury is tied closely to the Sun, which means this aspect keeps the Moon away from both the New and the Full Moon. On every trine day in our sample, the Moon was 84° to 155° from the Sun. Waxing, that runs from about the first quarter into the gibbous phase. Waning, it's the same stretch in reverse, ending near the last quarter. Either way it stops well short of the Full Moon.

In 24.3% of the trine days, the Moon was trine the Sun as well, which adds the softer harmony of Sun trine Moon. It doesn't always line up so neatly, though.

A trine and a square on the same afternoon

London, 13 August 1990. At noon the Moon was at 17°43' Taurus and Mercury at 17°43' Virgo: an exact earth trine. Mercury in Virgo is in one of the two signs it rules, which many astrologers see as giving its themes a clear voice.

The Sun, meanwhile, was at 20°26' Leo, and the Moon was closing in on a square to it. That square was exact at about 17:00, the moment of the last quarter Moon. So a child born at teatime that day has an easy Moon-Mercury trine and a tense Sun-Moon square in the same chart. A reading would have to hold both: words that come easily, set against a pull between identity and needs.

The trine was in orb all day, 6.37° wide at 00:30 and 6.40° at 23:30.

Is it there without a birth time?

Hard to say without the clock. The Moon moves 11° to 16° a day, enough to carry a wide trine into or out of orb within the day. The free birth chart therefore leaves out Moon aspect lines whenever the time is unknown, and what your chart can show without a birth time lists what still holds.

On the wheel

Trines are drawn as solid blue lines. Sextiles are blue too, but dashed, so check the line style. In the planet table the Moon and Mercury should be 112° to 128° apart. When neither planet is near a sign boundary, they'll usually be in signs of the same element.
