Moon Sextile Mercury: Finding Words for What You Feel

← Back to Aspects

A Moon-Mercury sextile forms when the two are between 54° and 66° apart. The calculator gives sextiles a 6° orb, a little tighter than the 8° used for the other four major aspects, so this one has the narrowest window of the set.

Astrologers tend to read it as a friendly working relationship between feeling and thinking. Moods can be put into words without much fuss, and words can calm a mood. Like every sextile, though, it's an invitation more than a guarantee. The ease is there when you use it.

What it can look like in a person

Someone with this aspect is often the friend people ring after a bad day, not because they fix anything but because they help the other person say what happened. They tend to ask the second question, the one that gets past "fine".

The same skill can face inward. Keeping a diary, voice notes to yourself, talking a problem over on a walk: small habits like these may settle you more than you'd guess. Some people with the sextile also have a good ear for how others speak, picking up accents, phrases and the mood behind a text message.

Day to day, it can show up as practical emotional sense. You notice you're tired before you snap, and you say so.

Where it gets lazy

Because the link is comfortable, it can be used to skim. Chatting about a feeling is not always the same as feeling it, and a person with this aspect may be fluent enough to talk around something for a long time. Another pattern is relying on reassurance: asking others to talk you down rather than sitting with the uncertainty for a while. Patterns like these are tendencies, not verdicts, and plenty of people with the sextile never fall into them.

How it compares with the trine and conjunction

The conjunction fuses feeling and thought so closely they can be hard to separate. The trine is usually described as an effortless flow between the two. The sextile sits between them in feel: two separate functions that cooperate well when asked to.

The Moon's phase on sextile days

Mercury stays close to the Sun, so a Moon-Mercury sextile also tells you roughly where the Moon was in its monthly cycle. In our noon charts from 1900 to 2099, the Moon sat between 27° and 92° from the Sun on every sextile day. Waxing, that's the crescent up to just past the first quarter. Waning, it's the mirror image, from a little before the last quarter down to a thin morning crescent. The aspect never forms near a New or Full Moon.

On 17.7% of those days the Moon was also sextile the Sun, which gives the chart a Sun-Moon sextile as well. Across all 73,049 sampled noon charts, the aspect turned up on 6.7% of days, about one sampled day in fifteen.

A sextile that came and went in one day

Take 29 December 1983 in London. At noon the Moon was at 11°30' Scorpio and Mercury, retrograde, at 11°28' Capricorn: 59.97° apart, almost exact. Yet the sextile did not last the day:

  • 02:05: 66.02° apart, just outside
  • 02:10: 65.96°, inside the orb
  • 21:50: 54.00°, right at the edge
  • 21:55: 53.95°, outside again

So someone born that afternoon has the aspect, and someone born at 01:00 or 23:00 the same day does not. The window was under 20 hours. Part of the reason is that Mercury was moving backwards, against the Moon's direction, so the gap closed faster.

Mercury retrograde isn't unusual on sextile days, by the way. It was retrograde on about 19% of them, the same rate as on any day in the period, so retrograde neither encourages nor blocks this aspect.

What a missing birth time does to it

A window that short is exactly why the free birth chart leaves Moon aspect lines off the wheel when you haven't entered a time. The Moon's noon position is shown as a date marker only. If you know roughly when you were born, how accurate a birth time needs to be helps you judge whether a sextile near the orb limit is safe to use.

Spotting it

With a time entered, look for a blue dashed line linking ☽ and ☿ on the wheel. Then check the planet table: count the whole signs between them at 30° each and adjust for the degrees. If the result lands from 54° to 66°, the sextile is there.
