Mystic Rectangle in Astrology: Two Oppositions Held by Trines and Sextiles

← Back to Aspects

A mystic rectangle is four bodies joined by six aspects: two oppositions, two trines and two sextiles. Drawn on the wheel, the two oppositions are the diagonals, the trines are the long sides and the sextiles the short sides. The name is traditional and descriptive of the shape; it does not mean the figure carries anything mystical or out of the ordinary. Unlike a kite, a rectangle contains no grand trine, and unlike a grand cross, it contains no squares. The general method is on how to find aspect patterns.

Scope of these guides: the worked examples use the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Chiron, and every leg is checked with the free chart's fixed orbs: conjunction 8°, sextile 6°, square 8°, trine 8° and opposition 8°, with the edge value counting. This is the teaching scope of these pages, not a rule that other points can never take part in a pattern. The Lunar Nodes, the chart angles and Lilith are left out of the main examples.

Calculator note: the free birth chart draws each major aspect as its own line on the wheel. It does not name patterns, has no pattern report and shows no numeric aspect list, so any figure on these pages was checked by hand from the planet table. Glyphs can be pushed sideways so they do not overlap; the small tick on the inner ring marks each body's true position.

The six legs

Call the four corners A, B, C and D in order around the circle. A rectangle needs A opposite C and B opposite D (172° to 180°), A sextile B and C sextile D (54° to 66°), and B trine C and D trine A (112° to 128°). Two oppositions alone are not enough, and neither is a pair of oppositions with one trine between them. All six pairs are checked, and the two sextiles, with their 6° orb, are usually the tightest test.

A worked example

Isaac is a made-up person. His positions are the calculator's for London, 18 July 2000, at 12:00. The four corners, in order:

Corner Body Table position Longitude
A Jupiter 3°35' Gemini 63.58°
B Venus 6°18' Leo 126.30°
C Pluto 10°26' Sagittarius, R 250.43°
D Neptune 5°26' Aquarius, R 305.43°
Pair Separation Aspect Orb
Venus and Neptune 179.13° opposition 0.87°
Jupiter and Pluto 173.15° opposition 6.85°
Jupiter and Venus 62.72° sextile 2.72°
Pluto and Neptune 55.00° sextile 5.00°
Venus and Pluto 124.13° trine 4.13°
Neptune and Jupiter 118.15° trine 1.85°

All six hold. One opposition is close to exact; the other, Jupiter and Pluto, is 1.15° inside its limit. Every leg here is in sign: the fire pair (Venus in Leo, Pluto in Sagittarius) and the air pair (Jupiter in Gemini, Neptune in Aquarius) supply the trines. That is common for rectangles but not required; an out-of-sign leg within orb counts just the same.

Reading the four together

The two oppositions are the tensions. Venus opposite Neptune sets affection and personal taste against longing and the ideal, which is often read as a tendency to look for something in love or beauty that ordinary life struggles to match. Jupiter opposite Pluto sets belief and the wish to grow against intensity and the question of control. What makes the figure distinct is that each end of each opposition has easy links to the other pair: Venus trines Pluto and sextiles Jupiter, Neptune trines Jupiter and sextiles Pluto. A common interpretation is tension that comes with its own means of working through it, so the pulls may be felt strongly but are not left without outlets. For Isaac that might mean that an idealism about relationships can be grounded through conviction and depth. It is one way to read the figure, offered as a possibility, not a description of his life.

A near miss inside the same chart

Isaac's Chiron is at 11°31' Sagittarius, 1.08° from Pluto. Could Chiron stand in Pluto's corner?

Pair Separation Result
Jupiter and Chiron 172.07° opposition, orb 7.93°
Venus and Chiron 125.22° trine, orb 5.22°
Neptune and Chiron 53.92° none, 0.08° short of the sextile window

Chiron passes two of its three legs and fails the third by 0.08°, about 5 minutes of arc. Add the three legs it would share with the original figure, the Venus-Neptune opposition, the Jupiter-Venus sextile and the Neptune-Jupiter trine, and that is five legs out of six, so there is no second rectangle. Here the table is precise enough: its separations can differ from the calculator's by less than a minute, and 5 minutes is well clear of that. On the wheel the line from Neptune ends at Pluto but not at Chiron, though the two ticks are barely apart.

A comparison four days later

Maya, also fictional, was born in London on 22 July 2000 at 12:00. Venus has moved to 11°13' Leo; Jupiter is at 4°19' Gemini, Neptune at 5°19' Aquarius and Pluto at 10°22' Sagittarius.

Pair Separation Result
Jupiter and Venus 66.90° none, 0.90° past the sextile window
Venus and Neptune 174.10° opposition, orb 5.90°
Venus and Pluto 119.15° trine, orb 0.85°
Neptune and Jupiter 119.00° trine, orb 1.00°
Pluto and Neptune 54.95° sextile, orb 5.05°
Jupiter and Pluto 173.95° opposition, orb 6.05°

One short side has slipped out, so the rectangle is gone. At 12:00, though, Maya's Moon at 5°43' Aries forms a different figure: it trines Venus (125.50°) and Pluto (115.35°), and Neptune is opposite Venus and sextile both the Moon (60.40°) and Pluto. That is a kite with Neptune as its focal planet. The Moon only took part in it from 06:45 to 22:29 that day, so for Maya the kite depends on her birth time, while the missing rectangle does not.

Glyphs and the birth time

Isaac's Venus glyph is drawn about 22° from its tick, pushed along by the Sun, Mars and the North Node in late Cancer, and the Chiron glyph about 11° from its own tick beside Pluto. A rectangle traced through the glyph centres would look badly skewed. The aspect lines run between the true positions, and the table gives the numbers; its minutes are a display truncated from positions rounded to 0.01°, not a guarantee of one-minute accuracy.

The Venus, Neptune, Jupiter and Pluto rectangle survives every minute of Isaac's date, from 00:00 to 23:59. The Moon, at 16°37' Aquarius at noon, is not part of it, but from 00:00 to 01:43 it stood in Neptune's place in a second rectangle. Without a birth time the free chart leaves out Moon lines and shows the noon Moon only as a reference for the date, so a Moon corner can never be assumed.
