Neptune or Pluto Square the Lunar Nodes: Outer Planets at the Bendings

← Back to Aspects

Neptune or Pluto squares the Lunar Nodes when it stands 82° to 98° from the North Node. The South Node lies directly opposite, so the planet is the same distance from it and squares both ends at once; the free chart draws two solid red lines from ♆ or ♇, one to N.Node and one to S.Node. Older astrology calls the two points a quarter of the way round from the Nodes the bendings. A planet there belongs to neither the familiar end nor the growth end. With Neptune it is often read as an ideal, a doubt or a longing that has to be taken into account whichever way the person moves; with Pluto, as a pressure point where deep change forces a rethink of both old habits and new aims.

Across the 73,049 daily noon charts of 1900 to 2099, Neptune squared the Nodes on 6,552 dates (8.97%) in 24 windows of 208 to 304 days, and Pluto on 6,413 dates (8.78%) in 23 windows of 210 to 308 days. One or the other did on 12,942 dates, 17.7% of the sample, about twice as often as either conjunction. Every window held a single exact square, for the same reason as the conjunctions: neither planet ever moves backward as fast as the Node. The two bendings lie half a nodal cycle apart, so the exact squares alternate between them, 8.25 to 8.53 years apart for Neptune and 8.17 to 8.88 years apart for Pluto. Each window covers seven to ten months of births, so this is again a generational marker.

Common interpretations

Neptune: the unclear third option. Many descriptions picture a person who keeps sensing a possibility that neither the old pattern nor the obvious new direction includes. In a hopeful reading this becomes imagination that reconciles the two; in a harder one, confusion about which way to go.

Neptune: idealism under test. The square is also read as a recurring check on ideals, where hopes about the future and nostalgia about the past both meet reality.

Pluto: change from outside the axis. Pluto at the bendings is often described as upheaval that does not come from either Node: a loss, a discovery or a shift of power that makes old and new plans alike look shallow.

Pluto: depth as a skill. In a constructive reading the person learns to rebuild after such shifts and helps others do the same.

None of this is fixed. Node contacts are a secondary layer in most readings, and with a cohort sharing the square, the planet's house and its aspects to personal planets say more about one chart. The bendings are introduced on the Sun's square to the Nodes.

Sextiles and trines to the Nodes

These come in an uneven pair. A planet sextile one Node sits 54° to 66° from it, which leaves it 114° to 126° from the other, inside the 8° trine orb, so the chart shows both lines. A trine can also stand alone, at 112° to 114° or 126° to 128°. In the sample Neptune sextiled a Node on 9,688 dates (13.26%), always with the matching trine, and trined one on 12,977 dates, so 3,289 were wide trines without a sextile. For Pluto the figures were 9,690 sextile dates (13.27%) and 12,877 trine dates, 3,187 of them without a sextile. Astrologers tend to read these as easier links between the planet's theme and the nodal story, and the site gives them no pages of their own; the North Node page shows how often one of the pair sextiled the Node while the other sat on it.

Long windows and short ones

As with the conjunctions, the Sun sets the length. Of the 47 windows, the nine where the Sun was within 19° of the planet at the exact square are a selected short extreme: Neptune or Pluto was moving forward near its conjunction with the Sun, and those windows lasted 208 to 250 days with 4 to 47 retrograde days. The 17 where the Sun was 84° or more away are a selected long extreme: they ran 298 to 308 days with 156 to 165 retrograde days, a whole retrograde season inside each. The remaining 21 windows, with intermediate solar elongations between those extremes at the exact square, ran 230 to 297 days with 56 to 163 retrograde days. Neptune was at the northern bending, about 90° ahead of the North Node in zodiac order, on 50.7% of its square dates, Pluto on 47.5%.

The short Neptune window of 2029, calculated ahead, runs from 1 January to 28 July 2029, 209 days with 15 retrograde days, with the exact square on 8 April 2029 at 8°57' Aries against a North Node at 8°58' Capricorn and the Sun at 18°54' Aries. NASA's catalogue lists four eclipses in that span.

The long ones give the tightest squares. In 1987 Neptune stayed within 1° of its square from 6 June to 14 August, 70 days, around an exact square on 14 July at 6°12' Capricorn against 6°12' Aries, with Neptune retrograde and the Sun at 21°29' Cancer. The window, 2 February to 2 December 1987, held the hybrid solar eclipse of 29 March at 12:48 Universal Time in NASA's list; at London noon that day the calculator has the Sun at 8°13' Aries and the Moon at 7°18' Aries near the North Node at 11°51' Aries, with Neptune at 7°58' Capricorn squaring the Sun by 0.25° and the Nodes by 3.89°. The Node moved into Pisces on 8 November 1987, so in the last weeks a Capricorn Neptune squared Nodes in Pisces and Virgo by degree, across signs that are not square to each other. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, Aries by Mars. The longest such stretch in the sample comes later, calculated ahead: 74 days from 25 November 2070 to 6 February 2071.

April 1904: three outer planets at once

Neptune and Pluto squared the Nodes at the same time on only 23 dates, 4 to 26 April 1904, when the two planets were still only about 14° apart. Uranus squared the Nodes on all 23 dates as well, from the other bending. At London noon on 15 April 1904 the calculator has Pluto at 19°00' Gemini and Neptune at 3°25' Cancer, 7.25° and 7.16° from the exact square, and a retrograde Uranus at 29°54' Sagittarius, 3.64° from it, with the North Node at 26°15' Virgo; Uranus was opposite Neptune by 3.52°. Uranus's own squares to the Nodes are covered in Uranus square the Lunar Nodes.

1965: a mutable cross with Uranus and Pluto

Pluto's window of 21 November 1964 to 15 September 1965, 299 days, fell inside the Uranus-Pluto conjunction in Virgo, which held on every one of its dates; Uranus squared the Nodes on 274 of them. The exact Pluto square came on 6 June 1965, with Pluto at 13°43' Virgo and the North Node at 13°41' Gemini at London noon. That day the calculator also has the Sun at 15°31' Gemini and Jupiter at 10°19' Gemini on the North Node side, Uranus at 10°51' Virgo with Pluto, and Saturn at 16°49' Pisces opposite Pluto and square the Nodes, with the South Node in Sagittarius: one planet or Node in each mutable sign. Jupiter was within 8° of the North Node from 21 May to 17 July 1965, and NASA lists a total solar eclipse at 21:16 Universal Time on 30 May. Gemini and Virgo are ruled by Mercury, Sagittarius by Jupiter, and Pisces has Neptune as its modern ruler and Jupiter as its traditional ruler. The conjunction itself is covered in Uranus conjunct Pluto.

2023: Pluto at the Capricorn-Aquarius edge

The window of 24 February to 25 December 2023, 305 days with 162 retrograde days, shows why degrees count more than sign names. Pluto entered Aquarius on 23 March 2023 and returned to Capricorn on 11 June, while the North Node moved from Taurus into Aries on 12 July. Pluto in Aquarius squared Taurus-Scorpio Nodes in the usual way, but before 23 March and from 11 June to 12 July a Capricorn Pluto squared Nodes in Taurus and Scorpio across signs of different modalities. The exact square came on 3 August 2023, with a retrograde Pluto at 28°50' Capricorn and the North Node at 28°51' Aries at London noon, and Pluto stayed within 1° from 1 July to 3 September, 65 days. NASA lists four eclipses inside the window, including the hybrid solar eclipse of 20 April 2023 at 04:16 Universal Time; at London noon that day the Sun at 0°07' Taurus squared Pluto at 0°19' Aquarius by 0.21°, with the North Node at 4°24' Taurus. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn and Libra by Venus. More on the sign in Pluto in Capricorn, and on the axis in North Node in Aries or Libra.

Later in the century: one on the Node, the other square

As Neptune pulls away from Pluto, the gap between them grows toward 90°, and the Neptune-Pluto square is in orb on and off from 21 September 2053 to 23 June 2072, calculated ahead. In those years one planet can sit on a Node while the other squares both the Nodes and that planet, a T-square with the squaring planet at the apex: the calculation finds 777 such dates between 2058 and 2071. On 19 July 2062, the date of Pluto's exact meeting with a Pisces North Node, the calculator places Pluto at 25°18' Pisces, the North Node at 25°19' Pisces and Neptune at 24°04' Gemini, 1.25° from squaring the Nodes and 1.24° from squaring Pluto.

Finding the square on your wheel

Look for two red lines from ♆ or ♇ to the Node symbols, then check the positions table: anything from 82° to 98° between the planet and the North Node, counted the short way round, is a square. Squares usually join signs of the same modality, but 15.2% of Neptune's square dates and 17.0% of Pluto's did not, as in 1987 and 2023, so the degree count decides.

When no birth time is given, the chart is drawn for local noon as a working reference, not an estimate of your time, and houses, the Ascendant and the Midheaven are not shown. Only 0.7% of the square dates for each planet were the first or last day of a window, the only days where the hour could change whether the lines appear. The house the planet occupies needs a known birth time. Check yours in the free birth chart.
