Out-of-Sign Aspects: When the Degrees and the Signs Disagree

← Back to Aspects

An out-of-sign aspect, sometimes called a dissociate aspect, is a contact that is within orb when you measure the degrees but falls in signs that do not have the usual relationship for that aspect. A conjunction between 29° Scorpio and 2° Sagittarius is the standard case: the two planets are 3° apart, yet they sit in neighbouring signs rather than the same one. This page explains how the free chart treats these contacts, how to recognise them quickly, how often they turned up in a large sample of calculated charts, and how astrologers tend to read them.

How the chart measures aspects: the free birth chart uses the five major aspects with flat orbs: conjunction 8°, sextile 6°, square 8°, trine 8° and opposition 8°, the same for every pair of bodies, with the edge value counting. It measures only the angle between two longitudes, the short way round the circle. Sign names play no part in the test, so an out-of-sign contact within orb is drawn as an ordinary line on the wheel, with nothing to mark it as different. The chart shows no numeric aspect list and does not calculate minor aspects such as the quincunx.

Which signs go with which aspect

Each major aspect has a matching sign distance. If you count signs the short way round the zodiac, these are the relationships an aspect "normally" has:

Aspect Window used here Signs apart, in sign
Conjunction 0° to 8° same sign
Sextile 54° to 66° 2 signs (Aries and Gemini)
Square 82° to 98° 3 signs (Aries and Cancer)
Trine 112° to 128° 4 signs (Aries and Leo)
Opposition 172° to 180° 6 signs (Aries and Libra)

When the degrees put a pair inside one of these windows but the signs are one step off, the aspect is out of sign. A square between Aries and Sagittarius (four signs apart, the distance of a trine) is one. A trine between Libra and Cancer (three signs apart, the distance of a square) is another. An out-of-sign opposition, such as Scorpio to Gemini, joins two signs that are five apart.

A quick way to spot one

Out-of-sign contacts follow a simple rule that you can check from the planet table without any arithmetic. Because the orb is at most 8°, the sign distance can only be off by one, and only when the two bodies sit at opposite ends of their signs. One has to be in the last 8° of its sign and the other in the first 8° of its sign, so their degree numbers differ by at least 22. For a sextile, with its 6° orb, the bodies are in the last and first 6° of their signs and the difference is at least 24.

So, scanning a table, look for a body at 22° or later in its sign and another at 7° or earlier, with degree numbers 22 or more apart. Two planets at 14° and 17° can never form an out-of-sign aspect, whatever their signs. The rule held for every one of the 92,661 out-of-sign contacts in the sample further down this page.

A worked example

Nadia is a fictional person. Her positions are the calculator's for London on 22 November 1988 at 12:00.

Body Table position Longitude
Sun 0°24' Sagittarius 240.41°
Mercury 25°22' Scorpio 235.37°
Venus 28°41' Libra 208.69°
Mars 3°45' Aries 3.75°
Jupiter 1°07' Gemini, R 61.13°
Saturn 1°03' Capricorn 271.05°
Uranus 29°25' Sagittarius 269.43°
Neptune 8°30' Capricorn 278.51°
Pluto 13°13' Scorpio 223.22°
Chiron 6°14' Cancer, R 96.24°

Leaving the Moon aside, the ten bodies make 19 major aspects at this time. Seven of them are out of sign:

Pair Separation Aspect Signs Signs apart
Sun and Mercury 5.04° conjunction Sagittarius, Scorpio 1
Saturn and Uranus 1.62° conjunction Capricorn, Sagittarius 1
Venus and Saturn 62.36° sextile Libra, Capricorn 3
Mars and Uranus 94.32° square Aries, Sagittarius 4
Venus and Chiron 112.45° trine Libra, Cancer 3
Mercury and Jupiter 174.24° opposition Scorpio, Gemini 5
Uranus and Chiron 173.19° opposition Sagittarius, Cancer 5

Every pair follows the spotting rule. The Sun at 0° and Mercury at 25° are 25 degree numbers apart; Saturn at 1° and Uranus at 29° are 28 apart; Venus at 28° and Saturn at 1° are 27 apart, enough for a sextile.

The other twelve are in sign. The Sun's trine to Mars (Sagittarius and Aries) and its opposition to Jupiter (Sagittarius and Gemini) are textbook, and so are Mars square Saturn and Saturn opposite Chiron. It is the same chart and the same calculation; the in-sign and out-of-sign lines are drawn the same way.

The reverse case: signs that suggest an aspect the degrees do not support

Signs can also mislead in the other direction. Venus at 28°41' Libra and Jupiter at 1°07' Gemini are both in air signs, which people often take as a trine. They are 147.56° apart, outside every major window. Mercury at 25°22' Scorpio and Mars at 3°45' Aries are 128.38° apart, 0.38° past the edge of the trine window, so there is no Mercury-Mars aspect at noon. And Jupiter at 1° Gemini and Saturn at 1° Capricorn share a degree number but are 150.08° apart, which is not a major aspect at all.

Why the birth time can change the label

Signs change while aspects hold, and the reverse. On Nadia's date the Sun moved from 29°54' Scorpio at 00:00 to 0°55' Sagittarius at 23:59, entering Sagittarius at 02:03. Checking every whole minute of the date with the calculator:

  • Before 02:03 the Sun-Mercury conjunction was in sign (both in Scorpio), while the Sun-Jupiter opposition (Scorpio and Gemini) and the Sun-Mars trine (Scorpio and Aries) were out of sign. From 02:03 the labels swap. All three aspects held for the whole date.
  • The Venus-Chiron trine began at 03:46. Before that the two were too far apart.
  • Mercury and Mars came within the trine window at 19:01, as an out-of-sign trine.

So a birth on this date before 02:03 has a Scorpio Sun with an out-of-sign opposition to Jupiter, and a birth at 20:00 has a Sagittarius Sun and an extra Mercury-Mars trine. Without a birth time, the free chart calculates the planets at local noon as an internal reference for the date and draws no Moon lines. The noon chart is not evidence of either version. Any statement that is meant to hold whatever the time has to be checked across the whole date, as above. Reading a chart without a birth time covers the rest.

How often out-of-sign aspects turned up

To see whether these contacts are an oddity or an everyday feature, the free chart's own routines (code version 512fc104) were run for London at 12:00 local clock time on every date from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2059: 51,135 dates. The body set was the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Chiron, which gives 45 pairs per date. The Moon was left out, because one noon position cannot stand for a whole date, and so were the Lunar Nodes. Pluto and Chiron are calculated for every date in that range.

Across those dates there were 763,247 major aspects, and 92,661 of them were out of sign: 12.1%. On 34,477 dates (67.4%), at least one aspect was out of sign.

Aspect Aspects in sample Out of sign Share
Conjunction 124,573 17,030 13.7%
Sextile 182,092 17,305 9.5%
Square 189,516 24,762 13.1%
Trine 174,687 21,732 12.4%
Opposition 92,379 11,832 12.8%

The sextile has the lowest share because its orb is narrower, so fewer degree combinations can reach across a sign boundary. These are shares of aspects and calendar dates in one sample, not shares of people, and they would shift with the place, the time of day or the body set. They show that most charts in the sample had at least one contact of this kind.

Reading an out-of-sign aspect

Astrologers do not all handle these contacts the same way. Some traditions work with whole signs and count aspects by sign relationship alone, so a Scorpio-Sagittarius pair is never a conjunction. Many modern astrologers measure degrees, as the free chart does, and count the aspect. Some of those then give an out-of-sign contact a little less weight, and some do not. These guides do not rank the approaches. They count what the chart counts, and they mention the sign relationship when it differs.

Two habits help either way.

Do not dismiss the aspect. In degrees, Nadia's Saturn-Uranus conjunction is 1.62° from exact, much tighter than her in-sign Saturn-Neptune conjunction at 7.46°. If you drop it because the signs differ, you lose one of the closest links in the chart. The two planets are commonly read together as a pull between structure and change, whatever the sign names.

Do not overstate it either. The usual sign flavour of the aspect may be missing. A trine is often described in element terms, two fire signs or two water signs supporting each other. Venus in Libra trine Chiron in Cancer joins an air sign and a water sign, so the element story does not apply, and the reading leans more on the planets and the angle. Likewise, Nadia's Sun-Mercury conjunction blends a Sagittarius Sun with a Scorpio Mercury. One possible reading is a broad, outward sense of self expressed through a probing, private style of thinking. That is a description of two different sign styles meeting, which a same-sign conjunction would not have, and it is offered as a possibility, not a verdict.

The same applies to the larger figures. A grand trine can include a body in a different element, and half the legs of the worked example on the kite page are out of sign. The generational aspect patterns page shows a slow figure whose trine slips out of sign for months while still being in orb. When you check a pattern, measure every leg in degrees; the sign labels are a note in the margin, not part of the test.

The Nodes and the wheel

The Lunar Nodes can make out-of-sign aspects to planets too, and they are measured the same way. Their own opposition to each other is never counted, because it is built into the definition of the axis. On the wheel, the free chart draws each aspect line between the true positions on the inner ring; glyphs can be pushed sideways when bodies crowd together. In Nadia's chart the Neptune glyph is drawn about 15° from its tick and Saturn's about 10°, so reading signs off glyph positions near a boundary is unreliable. Use the table, and remember that its minutes are truncated from positions rounded to 0.01°: if a contact comes within about a minute of an orb edge, the table cannot settle it.

Where to go next

The full checking method is on how to find aspect patterns. For the borderline question of whether a planet with only an out-of-sign contact counts as unaspected, see unaspected or not: borderline cases. The same degrees-first method between two people's charts is on comparing two charts by degree.
