Pluto Conjunct Chiron: Depth, Power and an Old Wound in One Place

A Pluto-Chiron conjunction puts the two bodies within 8° of each other in the birth chart. Pluto is associated with depth, power, intensity and the cycle of endings and renewal, and with whatever has been pushed out of sight. Chiron, in modern astrology, marks a tender spot that tends to stay sensitive and can, over time, become a source of understanding. When the two share a stretch of the zodiac, the old hurt and the urge to transform it are often read as a single theme.

Within the calculator's Chiron range, 1920 to 2060, they met twice: in Leo, exact on 19 July 1941, and in Sagittarius, exact on 30 December 1999. Each meeting is shared by births spread over many months, so the personal side comes from the house the pair occupies when the birth time is known, and from any personal planet that touches it.

How astrologers tend to read it

A hurt that goes deep. A common description is a sensitivity felt at the level of survival, trust or control, rather than as a passing sore point.

Breaking down to rebuild. Astrologers often link this conjunction with cycles of loss and renewal around the same tender theme, each one leaving some new understanding behind.

Seeing what others avoid. Some readings describe an early familiarity with crisis or taboo subjects, which can later turn into a steady presence for other people going through them.

Power and vulnerability side by side. The growth often named is learning that admitting the sore place does not mean losing control, and that strength and sensitivity can sit together.

These are patterns astrologers describe, not certainties about anyone. The rest of the chart can moderate, sharpen or redirect them.

Two meetings, 58 years apart

Of the 51,501 daily Greenwich noon charts from 1920 to 2060, 1,167 carry Pluto conjunct Chiron, 2.27%. On 19.6% of those dates the two are in neighbouring signs: in 1940 and early 1941 Chiron was still in late Cancer while Pluto was already in Leo.

Meeting Date span (first to last in-orb date) Dates in orb Exact passes Signs
Leo 4 Aug 1940 to 19 Jun 1942 610 1 (19 Jul 1941) Pluto in Leo, Chiron in Cancer then Leo
Sagittarius 28 Jan 1999 to 21 Dec 2000 557 1 (30 Dec 1999) both in Sagittarius

Each span holds two separate windows, and "dates in orb" adds them together. In the first, the main window ran from 4 August 1940 to 27 October 1941 (450 dates, with the exact pass); Chiron then came back to within 4.73° of Pluto between 11 January and 19 June 1942 (160 dates) without reaching exact. In the second, an early brush from 28 January to 8 May 1999 (101 dates) came no closer than 6.6°, and the main window followed from 23 September 1999 to 21 December 2000 (456 dates). Only 80 of the 1,167 dates have the two within 1°.

Both meetings fell while Chiron was in the fast part of its orbit, moving about 12° to 14° a year in 1940, 1941 and 1999, against Pluto's 1.4° to 2.3°. With that much difference in speed Chiron swept past Pluto once, so each meeting has a single exact pass, unlike the 1960s opposition of the same pair, which had eleven.

Chiron is never retrograde alone here

On conjunction dates the two bodies sit close together, so the Sun is about the same distance from both. Pluto can turn retrograde a little sooner as the Sun moves away (96.7° was the smallest Sun distance on any Pluto-retrograde date in the sample), and Chiron needs a little more room (100.4°). So Pluto stations retrograde first and turns direct last, and Chiron's retrograde season sits inside Pluto's. In the noon sample Pluto turned retrograde on 5 November 1940 and Chiron on 13 November; in 1941 Chiron turned direct on 28 March and Pluto on 15 April. In 2000 the order was the same: Pluto retrograde on 15 March, Chiron on 28 March, Chiron direct on 13 August and Pluto on 21 August.

The counts follow from that. Chiron was retrograde on 87.9% of the conjunction dates with Pluto retrograde, and on none of the dates with Pluto direct. Both were retrograde on 35.6% of conjunction dates, neither on 59.6%, and Pluto alone on the remaining 4.9%. In the planet table, a Chiron R marker on this line always comes with a Pluto R marker.

1941 in Leo

At London noon on 19 July 1941 Pluto stood at 3°40' Leo and Chiron at 3°42' Leo, 0.02° apart, both direct. The Sun at 26°19' Cancer was conjunct both (about 7.4°) from the neighbouring sign, Mars at 9°22' Aries trined both (about 5.7°), and Uranus at 29°24' Taurus sextiled both (about 4.3°) across a sign boundary. Neptune in Virgo sextiled Chiron on 326 of the 610 conjunction dates of 1940 to 1942.

On 1 January 1941 the line was 4.02° wide and out of sign: Pluto at 3°40' Leo and Chiron at 29°39' Cancer, both retrograde. Neptune at 27°41' Virgo, retrograde, was 1.96° from an exact sextile to Chiron, and Jupiter and Saturn in Taurus both squared Pluto.

Leo is ruled by the Sun and Cancer by the Moon, so the condition of the Sun and Moon adds to the reading of this cohort. Pluto in Leo covers the wider generation.

1999 and 2000 in Sagittarius

At London noon on 30 December 1999 Pluto was at 11°22' Sagittarius and Chiron at 11°23' Sagittarius, 0.01° apart, with Uranus at 14°42' Aquarius sextile both (about 3.3°). Uranus sextiled both bodies on 176 of the conjunction dates, from 28 November 1999 to 21 December 2000.

By 1 June 2000 the pair had separated to 2.79°, both retrograde (Pluto at 11°33', Chiron at 14°20' Sagittarius), and the Sun at 11°15' Gemini opposed Pluto within 0.30° and Chiron within 3.09°.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter. The sign is drawn as a centaur, and Chiron was a centaur in myth, but that is imagery: Astrologist.com assigns Chiron no sign rulership. See Pluto in Sagittarius and Chiron in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius.

Locating it on your chart

The free birth chart draws a conjunction in amber, and with Pluto and Chiron this close the line between ♇ and ⚷ is very short. The planet table confirms it: the two should be no more than 8° apart. Chiron, and so this line, is missing from charts for births before 1920 or after 2060.

For a chart with no birth time, local noon serves only as the calculator's reference point for the positions; it is not presented as the hour of birth. Since the gap between the two never changed by more than 0.17° in a day, the missing hour could make the difference on only about 0.3% of conjunction dates (an interpolation estimate between noon charts). With so many people sharing the line, it carries most weight when it touches the Sun, the Moon or a personal planet, or, when the birth time is known, lies close to the Ascendant or Midheaven; how to read Chiron in your chart suggests an order for reading it.
