Uranus Conjunct Chiron: Sudden Change at the Tender Spot

Uranus conjunct Chiron means the two were no more than 8° apart at birth. Uranus is the planet astrologers link with change, independence, sudden insight and the urge to break with what everyone else accepts. Chiron, a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, stands in modern astrology for a tender place that may, over time, become a source of understanding (see Chiron in astrology). Put together, the conjunction is usually read as a sensitivity bound up with being different, and a kind of repair that comes through change rather than through patience.

Within the range the calculator covers, this contact belongs to a single group of births: people born between 7 June 2042 and 16 October 2043. Everything on this page about those years is calculated ahead from the same routines that draw the free chart.

How astrologers tend to read it

Feeling like the odd one out. A common reading is that the hurt and the sense of not fitting in are the same thing here. Being unusual may once have felt like the problem.

Healing by breaking a pattern. Uranus does not repair slowly. Many astrologers describe this pairing as a person who moves forward through sudden turns: leaving a role, changing a method, or seeing an old situation in a new light all at once.

Restless with the familiar fix. The shadow side may be a habit of escaping before anything settles, so that change becomes a way of not feeling the sore place.

Insight for others. Over a lifetime, people with this conjunction are often described as the ones who find a new approach to an old difficulty, because they have no stake in the usual answer.

These are tendencies to explore, not predictions. A chart does not record what anyone went through, and because a whole generation shares the conjunction, its house (with a known birth time) and its contacts to the Sun, the Moon and the personal planets carry most of the individual meaning.

One meeting, after a 40-year silence

The sample behind this page is 51,501 Greenwich noon charts, one for every date from 1920 through 2060, the years in which the calculator shows Chiron. On 1 January 1920 Chiron was already 33.6° ahead of Uranus in zodiac order, so the previous meeting came before the calculator's range. Chiron then pulled further ahead, came round to oppose Uranus, and spent the 1990s and early 2000s catching up from behind.

That catch-up stalled for decades. From 2013 to 2028 Chiron, in the slow, far part of its orbit through Pisces, Aries and early Taurus, covered only 3.4° to 3.9° a year, while Uranus covered 3.9° to 4.4°, so the gap even widened for a while. On every 1 January from 2004 to 2040 Chiron was between 22° and 42° behind Uranus, and the gap closed only when Chiron began to speed up again. No Uranus-Chiron aspect of any kind appears on a noon chart from 13 November 2001 to 6 June 2042, a stretch of 40.6 years. The orbit behind those speeds is explained in why Chiron changes signs unevenly.

In 2042 Chiron is moving about 14° a year, so it finally reaches Uranus in Leo. The conjunction is in orb on 497 consecutive dates, 0.97% of the sample, about one date in 104, and every one of those dates has both bodies in Leo. They are within 1° of each other on 156 of them.

Three exact passes in Leo

Chiron passes Uranus three times, because each body's retrograde loop lets the faster one cross back. At London noon:

  • 14 November 2042: both direct at 17°25' Leo, exact. The Sun at 22°14' Scorpio squares both (4.82°), and Saturn at 10°55' Scorpio is square both as well (6.50°).
  • 1 January 2043: both retrograde at 16°45' Leo, 0.01° apart. Saturn at 16°00' Scorpio squares them within 0.76°, and Jupiter at 19°03' Sagittarius trines both (about 2.3°).
  • 14 June 2043: both direct again at 14°34' Leo. Neptune at 11°36' Taurus squares both (about 3°), and Saturn at 12°36' Scorpio, retrograde, still squares them (about 2°).

The window opens on 7 June 2042 with Chiron at 1°48' and Uranus at 9°48' Leo and closes on 16 October 2043. Saturn in Scorpio squared Uranus on 70.6% of conjunction dates and Chiron on 69.0%; Neptune in Taurus squared Uranus on 75.5% and Chiron on 69.2%. So many of these charts also carry red lines from the pair to Saturn and Neptune in the other fixed signs. The Saturn side of that picture is followed in Saturn square Chiron, which describes its run of 2039 to 2044.

The R markers move together, with Uranus first

Across the conjunction window Uranus was retrograde on 149 dates (30.0%) and Chiron on 133 (26.8%). Every date with a retrograde Chiron also had a retrograde Uranus. On 16 dates (3.2%) Uranus carried an R alone, and on the remaining 70.0% neither did.

The order comes from distance. A body looks retrograde when Earth overtakes it, and a body nearer to us needs the Sun further away before that happens. Chiron, heading toward its closest approach to the Sun in about 2046, is much nearer than Uranus in these years: in 2041 to 2044 it showed an R only with the Sun at least 107.6° away, against 103.0° for Uranus. So Uranus stations first, at 17°27' Leo on 23 November 2042, and Chiron follows on 30 November at 17°38'. In spring the order reverses: Chiron turns direct on 12 April 2043 and Uranus on 21 April.

Leo, ruled by the Sun

Leo is ruled by the Sun, so astrologers reading this conjunction usually look at the Sun's sign, house and aspects as well, and at whether the Sun touches the pair. Uranus is in Leo from 2039 to 2046, as it was from 1955 to 1962, a placement described in Uranus in Leo, and the Chiron side is covered in Chiron in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius. The themes of recognition, play and creative risk associated with Leo are the usual setting for the reading, while the house, when the birth time is known, shows where in life it is likely to be felt.

Finding it on your chart

On the free birth chart a conjunction is an amber line, and between ♅ and ⚷ in the same part of Leo it may be very short. In the planet table, look for both in Leo within 8° of each other. Births before 1920 or after 2060 have no Chiron on the chart, so no Uranus-Chiron line can appear for them.

If the birth time is unknown, Uranus and Chiron are drawn from local noon, a reference point and not a guessed hour. The separation between them changed by at most 0.18° a day anywhere in the sample, so the hour could change this line on only about 0.2% of conjunction dates (an estimate from interpolating between noon charts). Because a cohort of 16 months shares the line, it counts for more when the Sun, the Moon or a personal planet joins it, or when a known time puts it close to an angle; how to read Chiron in your chart gives a reading order.
