Saturn Square Chiron: Pressure, Standards and an Old Sore Spot

← Back to Aspects

Saturn square Chiron means the two stood 82° to 98° apart at birth, about a quarter of the zodiac. Saturn is the planet astrologers tie to rules, responsibility, effort, fear of falling short and the structures that last. Chiron is the tender place in the chart, read in modern astrology as a hurt that can, slowly, turn into insight. A square is the angle of friction: the two pull in different directions, and the tension tends to ask for some kind of action.

Because both bodies are slow, the square is shared by everyone born across many months, and in some decades across several years. The houses Saturn and Chiron occupy, when the birth time is known, and the personal planets they touch make it specific.

How the square is often described

Pressure on the sore spot. Demands to perform, to cope or to be sensible may seem to land exactly where a person feels least sure. The rule and the hurt rub against each other.

Strict with oneself. The square can show up as an inner critic that treats sensitivity as weakness. Some people push harder whenever the old feeling returns, which keeps it hidden but rarely settles it.

Trouble with authority. Teachers, bosses or institutions may be where the tension appears: rules felt as unfair, or a strong wish to be the one who sets them.

Building something sturdy. The growth side of the square is a structure strong enough to hold the sensitivity: a discipline, a profession or a set of limits that protects rather than punishes. Astrologers often describe it as hard-won but durable.

As everywhere on this site, these are patterns to explore, not verdicts. The chart does not say what happened to anyone or how they handled it.

The most common Saturn-Chiron angle

Across 51,501 Greenwich noon charts, one per date from 1920 through 2060 (the years the calculator includes Chiron), Saturn was square Chiron on 7,554 days: 14.67%, about one day in seven. There are two squares in every cycle, and in the 1940s and again in the 2040s a square was drawn out for years, which is why the square outnumbers every other Saturn-Chiron angle.

Saturn turns retrograde only with the Sun at least 108.6° away, and Chiron only with the Sun at least about 100° away. With the two 90° apart, a Sun far from one is often fairly close to the other, so the markers lean slightly against each other. On the 3,500 square days with Saturn retrograde, Chiron was retrograde on 40.3%; on the days with Saturn direct, on 56.2%. Chiron alone carried an R on 30.1% of square days, Saturn alone on 27.7%, both on 18.7% and neither on 23.5%. Out-of-sign squares made up 16.5% of square days.

1942 to 1954: a square that would not let go

Chiron races through Virgo, Libra and Scorpio, near its closest point to the Sun, at 12° to 17° a year, about Saturn's own pace. In those years the gap between them barely changed: on every 1 January from 1938 to 1952, Chiron stood between about 81° and 89° ahead of Saturn in zodiac order. Why Chiron changes signs unevenly explains the orbit behind that speed.

For several years the gap sat at the edge of the orb, a little short of 90°, so the line appeared only for a few weeks or months each winter. From late 1945 it tightened, and the run from December 1942 to July 1954 brought 14 exact passes, in orb at noon on 2,434 days. Each of the 14 came with exactly one of the two retrograde, Saturn and Chiron taking turns: 17 January 1946 with Saturn retrograde at 21°00' Cancer and Chiron at 21°00' Libra, then 7 April 1946 with Chiron retrograde at 18°15' Libra and Saturn direct at 18°15' Cancer, and so on until 10 July 1952, with Saturn at 8°55' Libra and Chiron at 8°57' Capricorn, retrograde. The 2040s bring a similar run from the other side, calculated ahead: 11 exact passes from 2039 to 2044, with Saturn moving from Virgo into Scorpio and Chiron from Gemini into Leo. After the first pass, which has both retrograde, they again take turns. In 2042 and 2043 that Saturn in Scorpio often squares Uranus too, because Chiron in Leo is then conjunct Uranus (Uranus conjunct Chiron).

2016 to 2017: Sagittarius and Pisces

The most recent square was short by comparison, with three passes. At London noon:

  • 28 December 2016: Saturn 20°58' Sagittarius, Chiron 21°00' Pisces, both direct, 0.04°.
  • 30 April 2017: Saturn 27°19' Sagittarius, retrograde, Chiron 27°17' Pisces, direct, 0.03°.
  • 2 November 2017: Saturn 24°45' Sagittarius, direct, Chiron 24°48' Pisces, retrograde, 0.05°.

The main noon window ran from 22 October 2016 to 15 January 2018. Shorter windows from 14 December 2015 to 25 April 2016 and from 5 May to 14 November 2018 came within 4.4° and 1.2° without an exact pass. Saturn in Sagittarius sits in a sign ruled by Jupiter, and Chiron in Pisces in a sign with Neptune as modern ruler and Jupiter as traditional ruler, so many astrologers would also look at Jupiter in those charts; Chiron in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces covers that Chiron.

Two other moments worth knowing

21 March 1976. The square was exact with Saturn at 26°03' Cancer, retrograde, and Chiron at 26°03' Aries. Jupiter at 28°52' Aries was conjunct Chiron (2.81°) and square Saturn too, so births that week show two red lines and an amber one between ♃, ♄ and ⚷; Jupiter conjunct Chiron covers the Aries conjunction of that year.

January and February 2039. Calculated ahead, Saturn in late Virgo and Chiron in late Gemini both turn retrograde and move backward in step: the square stays within 0.2° at noon from 20 January to 12 February 2039, exact at 28°54' on 29 January. It is the closest any Saturn-Chiron square comes to standing still in the sample.

Finding it on your chart

On your free birth chart a square is a solid red line between ♄ and ⚷; a dashed red line is an opposition. In the planet table the two longitudes should be 82° to 98° apart. Births before 1920 or after 2060 have no Chiron on the chart, so no Saturn-Chiron line appears for them.

If the birth time is unknown, Saturn and Chiron are placed at local noon as an internal reference, not as a guessed time. Their separation shifted by at most 0.23° a day in the sample, so the date alone settles the line on all but about 0.5% of square dates (estimated by interpolating between noon charts). For an R beside ♄, see Jupiter and Saturn retrograde in the natal chart.
