Saturn Sextile Chiron: Practical Ways to Work With an Old Hurt

Saturn sextile Chiron means the two were 54° to 66° apart when you were born, two signs apart in most cases. Saturn is the planet of structure, effort, limits and the slow mastery that comes from showing up. Chiron is the sensitive place that modern astrologers read as a hurt which can, in time, turn into understanding and a way of helping others. A sextile is a cooperative angle: it does not force the two together, it offers a way for them to work with each other when someone makes the effort.

Both bodies are slow, so this sextile is shared by everyone born over many months, sometimes years. The houses Saturn and Chiron occupy, when the birth time is known, and the personal planets they touch decide how much it says about one person.

What astrologers tend to see in it

A method for the sore place. Instead of avoiding an old sensitivity, people with this sextile may find a practical routine for it: a skill to practise, a schedule, a structure that makes it manageable.

Help through work. Training, a craft, a steady job or a role with clear duties can become the setting where the old hurt is handled sideways, by being useful rather than by talking about it.

Patience with recovery. Saturn adds time. The sextile is often read as a sensitivity that improves through small, repeated steps, which makes setbacks feel less like proof that nothing works.

The opening that has to be taken. Sextiles are easy to ignore. Astrologers usually describe the potential here as real but quiet: it tends to show only when someone chooses to use it.

All of this describes tendencies, in the psychological and evolutionary sense, not certainties. The chart does not show what anyone lived through.

A retrograde Saturn doubles the odds of an R on Chiron

Each body turns retrograde only with the Sun far away: in the sample of 51,501 Greenwich noon charts, one per date from 1920 through 2060 (the years the calculator includes Chiron), Saturn was retrograde only with the Sun at least 108.6° from it and Chiron only with the Sun at least about 100° from it. With the two 60° apart, a Sun far from Saturn is often, though not always, far from Chiron as well.

Saturn was sextile Chiron on 4,666 days, 9.06% of the sample, about one day in 11. On the 1,676 sextile days with Saturn retrograde, Chiron was retrograde on 56.0%. On the days with Saturn direct, only 27.1%. Both carried an R on 20.1% of sextile days and neither on 46.7%. Only 6.9% of sextile days were out of sign, the lowest share of the five Saturn-Chiron angles.

Five runs, with the angle sometimes standing still

The sample holds 29 exact passes, grouped into five runs: 1957 to 1958 with Saturn in Sagittarius and Chiron in Aquarius (five passes), 1972 to 1973 with Saturn in Gemini and Chiron in Aries (three), 2021 with Saturn in Aquarius and Chiron in Aries (three), 2034 to 2035 with Saturn in Leo and Chiron in Gemini (three), and a long run from 2047 to 2055 (fifteen). Single noon windows lasted 58 to 470 days.

The long run is the odd one. Chiron is fastest around its closest point to the Sun, due again around 2046, and then it outpaces Saturn. So instead of moving on toward a square and a trine, the gap between them shrank, from about 93° at the start of 2041 to about 50° in 2051, and then slowly opened again. The sextile was crossed on the way down and kept recurring for years: in orb on 2,219 days between 2 October 2046 and 1 April 2056. In 2050, 2051 and 2052 the line appears only between March and early November, and all five exact passes of those three years came with both bodies retrograde. In mid-2051 the two moved backward in step, within 0.2° of an exact sextile at noon from 24 June to 23 July (at London noon on 4 July 2051, Saturn 19°40' Aquarius and Chiron 19°40' Sagittarius, both retrograde).

2021: Saturn in Aquarius, Chiron in Aries

The most recent run had three clean passes. At London noon:

  • 9 February 2021: Saturn 6°16' Aquarius, Chiron 6°16' Aries, both direct, 0.01°.
  • 24 June 2021: Saturn 12°43' Aquarius, retrograde, Chiron 12°43' Aries, direct, 0.01°.
  • 27 November 2021: Saturn 8°41' Aquarius, direct again, Chiron 8°39' Aries, retrograde, 0.04°.

The main noon window ran from 7 December 2020 to 28 January 2022, with shorter ones from 25 February to 12 May 2020 and 10 August to 7 November 2022 that never got closer than about 5° and 4.5°. Two weeks into that window, on 21 December 2020, Jupiter and Saturn met at 0° Aquarius about 4.5° from a sextile to Chiron, a moment covered on Jupiter sextile Chiron. Through 2021 Saturn also squared Uranus in Taurus (0.74° at the February pass, 0.82° in June), so many 2021 charts show a red square line from ♄ next to the blue dashed sextile. Aquarius has Uranus as its modern ruler and Saturn as its traditional ruler, so this Saturn stands in one of its own signs; Chiron in Aries, ruled by Mars, is covered in Chiron in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius.

1958: a kite in air signs

On 11 June 1958 the sextile was exact with both retrograde, Saturn at 22°36' Sagittarius and Chiron at 22°36' Aquarius. The Sun at 20°00' Gemini and Jupiter at 21°50' Libra formed a triangle of trines with Chiron in the air signs, and Saturn stood opposite the Sun and sextile Jupiter and Chiron, a shape some astrologers call a kite. The wheel draws each of those lines but does not name the shape; aspect patterns explains how such figures are read.

The kite guide shows how to check all six legs of a figure like this.

Finding it on your chart

On your free birth chart a sextile is a dashed blue line between ♄ and ⚷; a solid blue line is a trine. In the planet table their longitudes should be 54° to 66° apart. The calculator includes Chiron only for births from 1920 to 2060.

With no birth time, Saturn and Chiron are placed at local noon as an internal reference only, never as an assumed birth hour. Their separation moved by at most 0.23° a day in the sample, so the date alone decides the line on all but about 0.5% of sextile dates (estimated by interpolating between noon charts). How to read Chiron in your chart explains how to weigh a shared line like this one against the personal ones.
