Saturn Trine Chiron: Steady Repair, and the Effort It Can Skip

Saturn trine Chiron means the two were 112° to 128° apart when you were born, usually in signs of the same element. Saturn stands for structure, time, discipline and the long view; Chiron for the sore spot that modern astrologers read as a source of understanding once it has been lived with. A trine is the angle of ease, where the two support each other without much friction.

This trine is rare and generational. Everyone born across a span of many months shares it, so the houses Saturn and Chiron occupy, when the birth time is known, and any personal planet involved do most of the individual work.

What astrologers tend to see in it

Calm around the hurt. An old sensitivity may sit inside a fairly steady frame: routines, responsibilities or a sense of time that keeps it from taking over.

Learning by doing. Many astrologers read the trine as a talent for practical repair, the kind that comes from patient practice rather than insight alone. Teaching a skill, mentoring or careful professional work are the usual examples.

Too comfortable to look. The shadow side of an easy angle is that nothing forces the issue. Coping well can become a reason never to examine what needed coping with in the first place.

Quiet authority. Over time the trine is often described as a reliable presence for others in difficulty, someone whose calm comes from experience and not from having been spared.

The psychological and evolutionary approach reads all of this as tendency, not destiny. The chart records positions, not anyone's history or choices.

Rarely retrograde together

Saturn looks retrograde only when the Sun is far from it (at least 108.6° in the sample of 51,501 Greenwich noon charts, one per date from 1920 through 2060, the years the calculator includes Chiron), and Chiron only with the Sun at least about 100° away. With the two 120° apart, a Sun that far from Saturn is usually closer than that to Chiron, and the reverse.

Saturn was trine Chiron on 2,425 days, 4.71% of the sample, about one day in 21, the rarest Saturn-Chiron angle after the conjunction. Both carried an R on only 217 of them, 8.9%. On the 924 trine days with Saturn retrograde, Chiron was retrograde on just 23.5%; on the days with Saturn direct, on 57.0%. Chiron alone was retrograde on 35.3% of trine days, Saturn alone on 29.2%, neither on 26.6%. Out-of-sign trines made up 15.8%.

Only in Chiron's slow signs

The sample holds 13 exact passes in three meetings: 1931 to 1932 with Saturn in Capricorn and Chiron in Taurus (five passes), 1978 to 1979 with Saturn in Virgo and Chiron in Taurus (three), and 2012 to 2014 with Saturn in Scorpio and Chiron in Pisces (five). Every exact trine had Chiron in Taurus or Pisces, two of the slow signs where Chiron stays about seven to eight years per visit (why Chiron changes signs unevenly). Each time Saturn was in a sign of the same element, earth or water.

There are near misses as well. In March 1930 Saturn came within 0.26° of an exact trine without reaching it, and in December 1977 within 0.85°, each less than a year before a meeting that did go exact.

After the last pass on 5 August 2014 there is a long gap. The trine was last in orb at Greenwich noon on 15 August 2015 and does not return until 22 September 2060, and that brief window gets no closer than 7.52°. In between, Chiron's fast years around 2046 keep the gap between the two from opening as far as 112°. No birth from mid-August 2015 to late September 2060 has this line.

1931 to 1932: earth signs, with the Sun on Saturn

The first meeting began with a pass on 5 January 1931, and the Sun was part of it. At London noon the Sun stood at 14°11' Capricorn, conjunct Saturn at 14°14' Capricorn (0.04°), and both were trine Chiron at 14°10' Taurus, retrograde (0.06° from Saturn, 0.02° from the Sun). Saturn rules Capricorn, so this was Saturn in its own sign.

Further passes followed on 22 June and 30 November 1931. The last two came close together: on 6 September 1932 both bodies were retrograde, Saturn at 28°40' Capricorn and Chiron at 28°40' Taurus, the only exact Saturn-Chiron trine in the sample with both retrograde; on 6 October 1932, Saturn direct again, they met at 28°07'. The noon windows of that meeting covered 623 days between November 1930 and December 1932. Chiron in Taurus is covered in Chiron in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn.

2012 to 2014: Scorpio and Pisces

The most recent meeting had five passes. At London noon:

  • 16 November 2012: Saturn 4°58' Scorpio, Chiron 4°58' Pisces, both direct.
  • 21 March 2013: Saturn 10°44' Scorpio, retrograde, Chiron 10°44' Pisces.
  • 2 October 2013: Saturn 10°10' Scorpio, Chiron 10°09' Pisces, retrograde.
  • 13 June 2014: Saturn 17°43' Scorpio, retrograde, Chiron 17°44' Pisces.
  • 5 August 2014: Saturn 16°50' Scorpio, Chiron 16°51' Pisces, retrograde.

Its noon windows ran from 21 September 2012 to 13 October 2014, with gaps in June and July 2013 and from December 2013 to March 2014, 585 days in orb. In spring 2013 Pluto in Capricorn was sextile both (0.72° on 21 March). On 14 May 2014 Jupiter in Cancer joined in, exactly trine Chiron and 2.60° from Saturn, the water grand trine described on Jupiter trine Chiron. Scorpio has Pluto as its modern ruler and Mars as its traditional ruler, and Pisces has Neptune as its modern ruler and Jupiter as its traditional ruler, so readings of this trine often bring in those planets too.

Finding it on your chart

On your free birth chart a trine is a solid blue line between ♄ and ⚷; a dashed blue line is a sextile. In the planet table their longitudes should be 112° to 128° apart. Chiron is only included for births from 1920 to 2060.

When the birth time is unknown, Saturn and Chiron are placed at local noon as an internal reference, not a stand-in for the real hour. Their separation moved by at most 0.23° a day in the sample, so the date settles the line on all but about 0.8% of trine dates (estimated by interpolating between noon charts). How to read Chiron in your chart explains where a shared trine like this fits in a reading.
