Mars Trine Chiron: Easy Courage, and the Fight It Can Skip
Updated October 20, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Mars trine Chiron means a separation of 112° to 128° between Mars and Chiron in the birth chart, usually with both in signs of the same element. Mars is assertion, desire, energy and the readiness to defend. Chiron is the sensitive place that astrologers associate with hurt and, over time, with the understanding that grows from it. A trine lets the two cooperate easily: acting tends to soothe the sore spot rather than press on it.
Easy aspects are gifts with a catch, because what comes easily can go unexamined. As always, the chart offers patterns to test, not verdicts.
Patterns linked with the trine
Action as relief. Doing something, walking, training, making, repairing, often eases the old sensitivity quickly. Many people with this trine notice that movement settles them when words do not.
Standing up for others without strain. The trine is often linked with a calm, steady courage on behalf of people who are hurting, and with a talent for helping them act for themselves.
Steady confidence near the sore spot. Where the square might flare or freeze, the trine tends to stay workable. Competition, conflict and desire can be handled without the whole old story coming up each time.
The fight it can skip. The catch is that comfort can let a real issue slide. Staying busy can become a way of not feeling, and the evolutionary reading asks whether the ease is being used for growth or only for distraction.
Look to Mars's sign and house for the setting where this cooperation is easiest to see.
Chiron is usually direct when Mars is retrograde
We checked one Greenwich noon chart per date from 1920 to 2060, the years in which the calculator includes Chiron: 51,501 charts. Mars was trine Chiron on 4,521 of them (8.78%, about every eleventh day), and Chiron carried an R on 49.9%, clearly above the 39.5% it shows over the full range. That follows from Mars's habit of staying on the Sun's side of the sky: with Mars 120° from Chiron, the Sun is often far enough from Chiron to fall inside its retrograde season.
The pattern reverses when Mars is retrograde. Of the trine days, 9.9% had Mars retrograde, and on only 4.3% of those was Chiron retrograde too, against 54.9% with Mars direct. A retrograde Mars stands roughly opposite the Sun, so a retrograde Mars trine Chiron pulls the Sun round towards Chiron's side of the sky (66° away on the median such day), short of the roughly 100° that Chiron's retrograde season needs.
The Sun was also trine Chiron on 10.5% of trine days. Out-of-sign trines made up 13.6%.
Windows and Mars loops
There are two trine points in each Mars-Chiron cycle, either side of the opposition, and the sample counts 157 noon windows for them over 141 years. A plain pass, with no Mars station involved, stayed in orb for 19 to 55 days, typically about 24. The twelve windows that included Mars-retrograde days lasted between 16 and 106 days; the longest in the sample is calculated ahead, from 19 October 2052 to 1 February 2053.
2016: a grand trine in water
In 2016 Mars turned retrograde around 18 April at about 8°54' Sagittarius and backed into Scorpio, where it met Chiron in Pisces by trine. The noon window ran 81 days, from 20 May to 8 August, with two exact passes at London noon:
- 12 June 2016: Mars 25°09' Scorpio, retrograde, Chiron 25°08' Pisces, direct. The trine was exact to the hundredth of a degree.
- 17 July 2016: Mars 25°04' Scorpio, direct since about 30 June, Chiron 25°04' Pisces, retrograde since about 28 June. Exact again.
Between the two passes Mars and Chiron swapped direction. On 17 July the Sun at 25°17' Cancer was trine both Mars and Chiron (0.23° each), so the chart for that day carries three trine lines between water signs: a grand trine. The wheel draws the three lines but does not name the pattern; aspect patterns explains how astrologers read it.
The grand trine guide shows how to check all three legs, including out-of-sign cases.
Recent and upcoming trines
10 June 2025. Mars at 26°10' Leo, Chiron at 26°06' Aries, both direct, 0.08° apart, in a window from 25 May to 25 June.
2026 to 2027, calculated ahead. Mars returns to Leo and then slows for a retrograde, so the trine to Chiron, in late Aries and then early Taurus, comes three times. On 19 November 2026 Mars at 27°18' Leo is trine Chiron at 27°16' Aries, retrograde (0.03°), with Jupiter at 26°08' Leo trine Chiron as well. That Jupiter trine is exact three times between December 2026 and August 2027, as set out in Jupiter trine Chiron. Mars turns retrograde around 11 January 2027 at about 10°25' Virgo; on 28 February it is back at 27°19' Leo, retrograde, trine Chiron at 27°31' Aries, which by then is direct (0.20°). After Mars turns direct around 2 April, the third trine falls on 20 May 2027, Mars 2°15' Virgo to Chiron 2°07' Taurus (0.12°). The noon windows are 4 November to 8 December 2026, 9 February to 28 March 2027 and 16 April to 9 June 2027.
Finding it on your chart
A trine is a solid blue line on your free birth chart; the dashed blue line is the sextile. ♂ and ⚷ should be 112° to 128° apart in the planet table. Chiron is shown only for births from 1920 to 2060.
A chart without a birth time still gets Mars lines, worked out from a noon reference position that is never treated as the real birth moment. Because Mars shifts by 0.8° a day at most, one calendar date rarely straddles the orb limit. It can happen, though: 12.2% of trine days had a noon orb within a degree of 8° and 6.5% within half a degree, and for births on those dates the hour decides.
