Mars Retrograde in the Natal Chart: Drive and Anger

Updated October 21, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

Mars in a natal chart describes heat: desire, assertion, competition, sexual spark, the urge to start and the way anger moves through the body. When Mars is retrograde at birth, that heat may turn inward first. Action can look measured from outside while feeling intense inside. Motivation may rebuild itself several times before it stays pointed in one direction.

On Astrologist.com, natal Mars retrograde appears as ℞ under the Mars glyph or as R in the planet table. Confirm it with the chart walkthrough. For the wider idea of natal versus transit retrograde, read what a natal retrograde is.

Mars as will and directed energy

Planet = what. Mars is directed energy: pursuit, defense, appetite for challenge, the capacity to say no and to push yes. Sign = how that energy styles itself (blunt, strategic, playful, dutiful). House = where contests and motivations tend to gather. Aspects = who else joins or blocks the push.

Aries and Scorpio are the signs historically tied to Mars (Scorpio also has Pluto as modern ruler; both rulers stay in view together). Mars in those signs can feel especially raw, retrograde or not. Browse Mars signs meaning and Mars drive and action for style detail.

Themes astrologers often explore with Mars retrograde

These are working hypotheses used in modern chart reading. Test them; do not adopt them as fate.

Motivation that incubates. You may need a private reason before you act in public. Once the reason is clear, follow-through can be stubborn.

Anger that goes underground before it speaks. Frustration might register as fatigue, sarcasm or sudden clarity after a delay, rather than as immediate fireworks. Learning safe, timely expression becomes a skill, not a failure of character.

Desire reviewed against past chapters. Attraction and ambition can carry memory. Old competitions or old desires may echo until they are consciously updated.

Self-directed standards of courage. Bravery might mean enduring an inner fight as much as winning an outer one. Comparison with louder Mars types can be unfair to both sides.

A Mars retrograde in Cancer will not match a Mars retrograde in Capricorn. House placement can matter as much as the R: Mars in the 1st behaves differently from Mars in the 12th.

Build the reading in layers

  1. Mars sign (how you push and protect).
  2. Mars house (where effort and conflict stories collect), when time is known.
  3. Major aspects, especially to Sun, Moon, Venus, Saturn and Pluto.
  4. Chart-ruler status if you have Aries rising (Mars alone) or Scorpio rising (Mars with Pluto).

Scorpio rising needs both Mars and Pluto in the conversation; see modern and traditional rulers. Do not drop Mars because Pluto is present, and do not drop Pluto because Mars is retrograde.

Aspects still use Astrologist.com's flat major orbs. A Mars-Saturn square remains a Mars-Saturn square when Mars is retrograde; the retrograde note may simply emphasise self-pressure or delayed release. With Chiron, a retrograde Mars also says something about Chiron's own direction, because both depend on where the Sun stands: from 1920 to 2060, Chiron was retrograde on every day of a retrograde Mars conjunct Chiron, on 4.3% of days of a retrograde Mars trine Chiron and on none of a retrograde Mars opposite Chiron. The Lunar Nodes follow the same logic: a retrograde Mars on the North Node or the South Node puts the Sun on the far side of the sky, toward the other end of the axis, and every retrograde period that reached a Node between 1900 and 2099 held eclipses, while a retrograde Mars square the Lunar Nodes keeps the Sun at least 34° from both Nodes.

What natal Mars retrograde is not

It is not proof that you are passive, weak or doomed to lose. It is not a guarantee of repressed rage either. Those caricatures show up in internet lists more often than in careful chart work.

It is also not identical to a transit Mars retrograde, when collective projects and conflicts often require review for a couple of months. Your natal Mars does not flip direct when the sky's Mars does.

Clearer myth-busting sits in natal retrograde myths.

Read neighbouring markers separately

Keep Mercury and Venus stories distinct if they are also retrograde:

For social and outer planets: Jupiter and Saturn retrograde, outer planets retrograde.
