Chiron Retrograde in the Natal Chart: How Common and What It Means

Updated October 21, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Planets

Chiron retrograde at birth means that, seen from Earth, Chiron was moving backward through the zodiac when you were born. On the free birth chart it gets the same ℞ on the wheel and R in the planet list as any retrograde planet. It is common: on roughly two dates in every five, Chiron carries the marker.

This page covers how often that happens, why it follows Chiron's angle to the Sun so closely, the date range in which the calculator shows Chiron at all, and how to read the marker without turning it into a verdict. The general idea of a natal retrograde is on what a natal retrograde is.

How often Chiron is retrograde

In a sample of London charts at 12:00 local clock time on every date from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2059 (51,135 dates, code version e17516ee), Chiron was retrograde on 20,177 dates: 39.5%. That is a share of calendar dates in one sample, not a share of people.

Chiron turns retrograde about once a year and stays retrograde for four to five months each time. Measured from each calculated station retrograde to the next station direct, the stretches between 1920 and 2060 ran from 128 to 157 days, about 147 on average.

The variation is not random. Chiron's orbit is strongly elongated: at its nearest it comes slightly inside Saturn's orbit, and at its farthest it reaches almost as far out as Uranus. When Chiron is nearer the Sun it moves faster, and its retrograde stretches are shorter.

Retrograde stretch Length Chiron at the station retrograde
13 July to 17 December 1920 157 days 10° Aries
6 July to 10 December 1968 157 days 3° Aries
28 January to 4 June 1996 128 days 14° Libra
26 July to 29 December 2024 156 days 23° Aries
20 January to 28 May 2046 128 days 6° Libra

The short stretches come when Chiron is in Libra and the long ones when it is in Aries, at opposite ends of its orbit. The same uneven speed is why Chiron spends years longer in some signs than in others.

The Sun decides the R

Chiron, like every body whose orbit lies outside Earth's, goes retrograde around the time it stands opposite the Sun. The station retrograde comes some weeks before the opposition and the station direct some weeks after it, at an angle from the Sun of about 100° to 114°, depending on where Chiron is in its orbit. In the noon sample:

  • Chiron was never retrograde when it was less than 100° from the Sun. It never had the R with the Sun conjunct, sextile or square it.
  • With the Sun opposite Chiron (within the chart's 8° orb), Chiron was retrograde on every one of 2,111 dates.
  • With the Sun trine Chiron, it was retrograde on 4,333 of 4,360 dates (99.4%). The other 27 dates fall in the years when Chiron was near the Sun, the stretch was short, and the stations came at about 113° from the Sun, inside the trine's range.

So if your chart has a Sun opposite Chiron, you will see the R; with a Sun square Chiron or a Sun conjunct Chiron, you will not. The full geometry, for every planet, is on retrograde planets and the Sun.

Two births on Chiron's turning day

Chiron turned retrograde on 26 July 2024. In the calculator's model the station fell at 14:58 British Summer Time (BST), with Chiron at 23°31' Aries. Marta and Owen are fictional people born in London (51.5074, -0.1278) that day.

Person Birth (London, BST) Time from the station Chiron on the chart
Marta 26 July 2024, 08:00 6 hours 58 minutes before 23°31' Aries, no R
Owen 26 July 2024, 21:00 6 hours 2 minutes after 23°31' Aries, R

A chart for that date shows Chiron without the R at 14:58 and with it from 14:59. Chiron's speed at Marta's birth was +0.00025° a day and at Owen's -0.00022° a day: in practice it was standing still for both, and the label only records which side of the turn each was born on.

That turning point is a model time, and the way it is modelled matters. Chiron's positions come from a table the site generated from Lowell Observatory orbital data, one value per day at noon Universal Time, with positions and speeds in between found by straight-line interpolation. The R follows the sign of that interpolated speed. Another Chiron ephemeris can put the station a little earlier or later, so a birth within a short time of a Chiron station is a close call. Stationary planets at birth explains how to measure that distance.

Dates the chart covers

The calculator shows Chiron for birth dates from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060. For a date outside that range, Chiron is left off the wheel and the planet list, and a coverage note under the chart says so. A missing Chiron is not a direct Chiron: there is simply no Chiron result for that date. How to find your Chiron sign lists every sign change inside the range.

The R does not need a birth time. Chiron moves so slowly that the R stays the same all day except on the few dates when Chiron stations; in the noon sample that happened on 274 dates. Retrograde planets without a birth time covers those dates.

Reading Chiron retrograde without overstating it

Many astrologers read a retrograde Chiron as a more inward version of the Chiron theme: sensitivity and repair worked through privately, at the person's own pace, before it is shared or used to help others. That is one common reading, offered as a possibility to check against experience.

A few things it is not:

  • Not a bigger wound. Two dates in five have it, so it cannot single anyone out. Retrograde does not make Chiron heavier or harder.
  • Not karmic or past-life evidence. The site does not read any retrograde as proof of a past life, unfinished karma or a debt carried in from before birth. The natal retrograde myths page covers this claim for every planet.
  • Not a delay. It does not mean healing, growth or anything else is postponed.
  • Not the main fact about Chiron. House (with a reliable birth time), aspects and sign still come first. How to read Chiron in your chart gives that order with a worked example.

Because Chiron stays retrograde for months, everyone born in the same season shares the marker. It becomes personal through the house and through contacts to the Sun, Moon and personal planets, not through the R alone.

Generate your free birth chart and find the ⚷ glyph. Look for the R, then note Chiron's angle to the Sun: near an opposition you can expect the R, near a conjunction or square you can expect none. If you were born close to a Chiron station, compare your birth time with the station time in an ephemeris. To talk the placement through, bring the chart to Ask the Astrologist.
