Sun Trine Chiron: Easy Empathy and the Wounds It Can Skip

Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Aspects

Sun trine Chiron means the Sun and Chiron were 112° to 128° apart when you were born. The trine is the smoothest of the major aspects, so this contact is usually read as an easy relationship between the core self and Chiron's theme of sensitivity and repair. The sore spot is still there. It just tends to sit alongside the identity without constant argument.

The easy flow has a familiar catch. What comes without effort is easy to leave unexamined.

The gift

Putting people at ease. Many people with this trine are good company for someone who is having a hard time. They do not flinch from the subject and they do not take it over.

Teaching from experience without preaching. The understanding that grew from their own difficulty can be passed on in a matter-of-fact way, often to people a few steps behind them.

Recovering well. Setbacks tend to be absorbed into the sense of self rather than shattering it. Some astrologers describe this trine as resilience that does not need to announce itself.

Comfort with imperfection. There can be a relaxed attitude to flaws, one's own and other people's, that others find reassuring.

What can get skipped

The trine makes it easy to be helpful and harder to be helped. A person may be the one everyone confides in while keeping their own sore spot at arm's length, or assume that because they cope, there is nothing left to look at. The developmental work in the evolutionary reading is to turn the same easy empathy inward from time to time. As with any aspect, this describes a tendency, not a certainty.

An R beside Chiron is the normal case

In our noon sample (51,501 Greenwich charts, one per day from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060, the full range in which Chiron is calculated) the Sun trined Chiron on 8.5% of days, about one in 12. Each cycle has two trines and each window lasted 15 to 17 days.

On 99.4% of those trine days Chiron was retrograde, against 39.5% of all sampled days. The trines fall inside Chiron's retrograde season:

  • The Sun about 120° ahead of Chiron in zodiac order: the middle of this window came 5 to 20 days after Chiron turned retrograde.
  • The Sun about 120° behind Chiron: the middle came 7 to 20 days before Chiron turned direct.

So if your chart shows this trine with an R beside ⚷, that is what almost every Sun trine Chiron chart looks like, not an extra condition to decode. What natal retrograde means covers how lightly to treat it. The squares, a little closer to the conjunction in each cycle, show the opposite pattern: Chiron is direct every time, as Sun square Chiron shows. Venus, which can sit up to about 47° from the Sun, loosens the rule: Chiron was retrograde on 59.6% of Venus trine Chiron days.

December 2025: a fire trine

The last trine of 2025 was in orb from 7 to 21 December. At London noon on 14 December the calculator gives the Sun at 22°45' Sagittarius and Chiron at 22°46' Aries, retrograde: 0.02° from exact. That is a trine between two fire signs. Chiron turned direct around 3 January 2026, 20 days after the exact trine. The New Moon of 20 December, at the end of the window, added a Moon trine as well, covered in Moon trine Chiron. A month earlier Mercury had made an almost exact Sagittarius-Aries trine to Chiron; see Mercury trine Chiron. For more on that placement, see Chiron in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius.

For the Chiron in Aries generation of 2018 to 2027 this is the usual picture: the Sun was in Leo or Sagittarius on 224 of the 252 sampled trine days of those years.

The exceptions: years when Chiron was closest to the Sun

The 0.6% of trine days with a direct Chiron all fell in three clusters: 1943 to 1948, 1995 to 1998 and 2045 to 2049. Those are the years around Chiron's closest approaches to the Sun. When Chiron is near the Sun its retrograde season is at its shortest (128 days, against 157 days when it was far out around 2019 to 2021) and it turns retrograde a little later in the cycle and direct a little earlier. That lets the edge of a trine window fall outside the retrograde stretch. In the whole range, 26 of 276 trine windows contained a station.

A clear case is early 1996, with Chiron racing through Libra. The trine with the Sun in Aquarius ran from 27 January to 11 February 1996. Chiron was still direct at 14°21' Libra on 27 and 28 January and turned retrograde around 29 January, so a noon chart for either of those two days has this trine with no R. Chiron's closest point to the Sun came in mid-February 1996, just after the window ended. Chiron in the air signs covers the Libra side.

Signs, and finding it on your chart

Trines usually join signs of the same element, as Sagittarius and Aries do. On 12.9% of sampled trine days the trine was out of sign, with one body near the edge of its sign.

On your free birth chart a trine is a solid blue line; a dashed blue line is a sextile. Check that ☉ and ⚷ are 112° to 128° apart. Chiron is shown for birth dates from 1920 to 2060, and outside that range it is left off with a note, so no trine can be drawn. Without a birth time, noon is used as an internal reference; on 5.8% of sampled trine days the noon separation was within half a degree of the 8° limit, so for those dates the birth hour decides.
