Sun Square Chiron: When Self-Expression Rubs Against an Old Hurt
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Sun square Chiron means the Sun and Chiron were 82° to 98° apart when you were born. A square is a contact of friction: the two sides want different things and neither can simply ignore the other. With the Sun on one side and Chiron on the other, the friction runs between the wish to express yourself fully and a spot that has been sore for a long time.
Astrologers often treat this square as one of the more motivating Chiron contacts. The tension tends to be felt rather than hidden, and that can make it easier to work with than a quieter aspect.
The push-and-flinch pattern
Pushing harder where it hurts. One common version is overcompensation: proving yourself in exactly the area that feels shaky, setting the bar very high, or taking on the role of the strong one.
Pulling back at the last moment. The opposite version is hesitation. A person may prepare thoroughly and then hold back from the visible step, as if being seen would reopen something.
Criticism that lands on the bruise. Ordinary feedback can feel personal when it touches the Chiron theme, and the reaction may surprise the person as much as anyone else.
Mastery through repetition. The constructive side is that the square keeps the subject in view. Many people with this aspect become unusually skilled at the very thing that once felt impossible, simply because they kept going back to it.
In the evolutionary reading, the square is where effort builds capacity. It describes a pattern that can be worked with, not a fixed outcome, and the Sun's sign and house usually show where the friction is most practical to address.
The squares bracket Chiron's retrograde season
In our noon sample (51,501 Greenwich charts, one for each day from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060, the full span in which the calculator includes Chiron), the Sun squared Chiron on 8.9% of days, about one day in 11. Each cycle has two squares, and each window lasted 15 to 18 days.
On every sampled square day, Chiron was direct. The timing explains why:
- The Sun about 90° ahead of Chiron in zodiac order: this square came 12 to 25 days before Chiron turned retrograde.
- The Sun about 90° behind Chiron: this square came 9 to 25 days after Chiron turned direct.
Chiron turns retrograde when the Sun is roughly 101° to 114° ahead of it and direct again when the Sun is roughly 99° to 113° behind it, depending on how far Chiron is from the Sun at the time. Both squares fall just outside that stretch, one on the way in and one on the way out. The trine, a little further round, lands inside it almost every time, which is covered in Sun trine Chiron.
2026: two squares and a T-square
January. Chiron turned direct around 3 January 2026 at 22°36' Aries. The square window followed from 5 to 20 January, and at London noon on 12 January the calculator has the Sun at 22°17' Capricorn and Chiron at 22°38' Aries, 0.35° from exact.
That day the Sun was not alone. Venus and Mars were also in Capricorn, squaring Chiron within about 1°, and Jupiter in Cancer stood opposite all three while squaring Chiron as well. That Jupiter-Chiron square was exact three times between October 2025 and July 2026; Jupiter square Chiron follows it. On the wheel that is a T-square: an opposition between Jupiter and the Capricorn planets, with Chiron at the apex squaring both ends. The chart draws every one of those lines but does not label the pattern; aspect patterns explains how astrologers read one. The New Moon of 18 January, near the end of the window, brought a Moon square too; see Moon square Chiron. Mercury was square Chiron through most of that same January window; Mercury square Chiron has the 16 January chart.
July. The second square ran from 15 to 31 July, exact on 23 July with the Sun at 0°37' Leo and Chiron at 0°48' Taurus (0.18°). Chiron had entered Taurus in June. For the first eight days of the window the Sun was still in Cancer, and Cancer and Taurus are signs that normally sextile, so that part of the square was out of sign. From 23 July it linked Leo and Taurus, two fixed signs. Chiron then turned retrograde around 4 August, 12 days after the exact square.
Out-of-sign squares made up 13.4% of sampled square days. In charts with Chiron in Aries from 2018 to 2027, the Sun was usually in Cancer or Capricorn. Venus squares Chiron from the same two signs, yet Chiron is retrograde on more than a third of those days; Venus square Chiron explains the difference.
Finding it on your chart
On your free birth chart a square is a solid red line. Check that ☉ and ⚷ are 82° to 98° apart in the planet table. Chiron is only shown for birth dates from 1920 to 2060; outside that range there is a note instead of a Chiron glyph, so no Sun-Chiron square can be drawn.
With no birth time, the Sun is placed at local noon as a reference only. That rarely matters here, but on 6.2% of sampled square days the noon separation was within half a degree of the 8° limit, and for those dates the birth hour decides whether the line appears.
