Jupiter Square Chiron: Big Hopes Pressing on a Sore Spot

Jupiter square Chiron means Jupiter and Chiron were between 82° and 98° apart at birth. Jupiter is the part of the chart that wants more: more meaning, more room, more faith that things can grow. Chiron is the tender place astrologers read as an old sensitivity that can, with patience, become wisdom. At right angles the two press on each other, so hope and hurt tend to show up at the same moments and pull in different directions.

That tension is useful as well as uncomfortable. Nothing in it is a verdict on anyone's life, and the chart does not record what actually happened.

Where the friction tends to show

Promising too much. One reading of the square is an urge to fix the sore place with something large: a sweeping plan, a new belief, a promise that this time everything will be different. The plan can outgrow what is actually possible.

Preaching instead of feeling. Advice may come out faster than sympathy, for others and for oneself. A ready philosophy can be a way of not sitting with the hurt.

A crisis of meaning. When the sensitive spot is touched, faith in teachers, institutions or one's own luck can wobble. Many astrologers see that wobble as the start of a sturdier and more personal set of beliefs.

Learning proportion. The growth side of the square is a sense of scale: knowing when a hurt needs a big answer and when it needs a small, steady one. People with this aspect often become good at helping others find that scale.

In the psychological and evolutionary approach the square is read as a long piece of practice. Jupiter's sign and house show where the reaching happens; Chiron's show where it is felt.

The two R markers barely depend on each other

Across 51,501 Greenwich noon charts, one per date from 1920 through 2060 (the calculator's Chiron range), Jupiter was square Chiron on 4,794 days, 9.31%, about one day in 11. Chiron was retrograde on 38.4% of them, close to its 39.5% across all days, and Jupiter on 31.0%, close to its overall 30.3%.

What stands out is how little one marker says about the other. On the 1,487 square days with Jupiter retrograde, Chiron was retrograde on 33.6%; with Jupiter direct, on 40.6%. A retrograde Jupiter means the Sun stands far from Jupiter, at least 114° on every sampled retrograde day. On a square that leaves the Sun at a middling distance from Chiron, on either side of the roughly 100° it takes before Chiron can turn retrograde. Both were retrograde on 10.4% of square days and both direct on 41.0%.

Squares were also the most often out of sign of the five Jupiter-Chiron aspects: on 13.9% of square days the two sat in signs that do not normally square each other.

Waxing and waning, months at a time

Every Jupiter-Chiron cycle has two squares: a waxing one, with Jupiter 90° ahead of Chiron, and a waning one before the next conjunction. The sample has 18 square meetings, 5.9 to 11.1 years apart. Eleven had three exact passes and kept the line in orb at noon for 260 to 364 days in total. Seven had a single pass, lasting 67 to 82 days.

December 2019, a single pass. At London noon on 9 December 2019 Jupiter at 1°30' Capricorn squared Chiron at 1°26' Aries, retrograde, 0.07°. The noon window ran from 5 November 2019 to 14 January 2020, 71 days.

2025 to 2026, three passes from Cancer. The next square came with Jupiter in Cancer and Chiron in late Aries:

  • 23 October 2025: Jupiter 24°32' Cancer, Chiron 24°36' Aries, retrograde, 0.05°. The Sun at 0°18' Scorpio was opposite Chiron (5.70°) and square Jupiter (5.75°), so Jupiter sat at the apex of a T-square.
  • 21 December 2025: Jupiter 22°39' Cancer and Chiron 22°40' Aries, both retrograde, 0.01°.
  • 12 January 2026: still in orb at 2.82°, with Chiron direct again. This time the Sun at 22°17' Capricorn squared Chiron (0.35°) and opposed Jupiter (2.47°), so Chiron took the apex. Sun square Chiron walks through that chart, in which Venus and Mars in Capricorn squared Chiron as well.
  • 2 July 2026: Jupiter 0°28' Leo, Chiron 0°24' Taurus, both direct, 0.06°.

At Greenwich noon the line was in orb from 5 September 2025 to 19 February 2026 and again from 8 May to 9 August 2026. Anyone born in those stretches has it. The next square, calculated ahead, is the waning one of 2033 from Aquarius to Taurus.

Finding it on your chart

On your free birth chart a square is a solid red line between ♃ and ⚷; a dashed red line is the opposition. The planet table should show the two longitudes 82° to 98° apart. If the square is part of a T-square, the wheel draws each line separately and does not label the shape; the T-square section of aspect patterns explains how it is read. Chiron is only calculated for births from 1920 to 2060.

If your birth time is unknown, Jupiter and Chiron are placed at local noon as an internal reference. Their separation changed by no more than 0.33° a day in the sample, so the date decides the line on all but about 0.9% of square dates (estimated from noon-to-noon interpolation). Because the line lasts for months, give more attention to any personal planet it touches; how to read Chiron in your chart gives the order.
