Jupiter Sextile Chiron: Openings to Learn From an Old Hurt

Jupiter sextile Chiron means the angle between Jupiter and Chiron at birth fell between 54° and 66°. Jupiter stands for growth, belief, study, generosity and the people who widen your view. Chiron marks a sensitive place that astrologers read as an old hurt which can slowly become understanding. A sextile links them in a cooperative way, but it is the quietest of the five major aspects: the opening is there, and something has to be done with it.

As with every Jupiter-Chiron line, a great many people born in the same months share it. The houses Jupiter and Chiron occupy, and the personal planets they touch, decide how much it says about one person.

How the sextile is usually read

Help that arrives sideways. A course, a book, a teacher or a friend from another culture can turn up at the moment the old sensitivity is active. The sextile is often described as noticing that kind of opening and saying yes to it.

Learning by explaining. Some people find that talking or writing about the sore place, in plain words and with some humour, is what loosens it. Others discover they are good at explaining hard things to people who are struggling.

Optimism with a lighter touch. Where the conjunction can lean on a big story and the square can overreach, the sextile tends toward a practical hope: small steps that make the tender spot less tender.

The risk is drifting. Because nothing forces the issue, the opening can simply be left unused. The psychological and evolutionary approach treats the sextile as an invitation, not a promise, and the chart says nothing about what anyone has lived through.

Jupiter's R marker changes the odds for Chiron's

Over 51,501 Greenwich noon charts, one per date from 1920 through 2060 (the range in which the calculator includes Chiron), Jupiter was sextile Chiron on 3,922 days: 7.62%, roughly one day in 13. Chiron had an R on 40.6% of them, almost the same as its 39.5% across all days. That average hides a split.

Jupiter only turns retrograde when the Sun is on the far side of the sky from it (at least 114° away on every sampled retrograde day). With Chiron just 60° along from Jupiter, that often leaves the Sun far from Chiron as well, and Chiron needs the Sun at least about 100° away before it can be retrograde. So on the 1,252 sextile days with Jupiter retrograde, Chiron was retrograde on 60.2%. On the days with Jupiter direct, the figure was 31.4%, about half as often. Both bodies were retrograde together on 19.2% of sextile days and both direct on 46.7%.

One pass or three

Each Jupiter-Chiron cycle has two sextiles: a waxing one after the conjunction, when the faster Jupiter has pulled 60° ahead, and a waning one as Jupiter comes round again behind Chiron. The sample holds 18 sextile meetings, 3.7 to 14.8 years apart.

Twelve of them had three exact passes, with Jupiter's retrograde loop carrying it back and forth across the exact angle. These kept the line in orb at noon for 211 to 328 days in total. The other six had a single pass and lasted only 57 to 70 days. Out-of-sign sextiles made up 9.3% of sextile days.

2021 and 2024 to 2025: either side of the Aries conjunction

January 2021, waning. At London noon on 11 January 2021 Jupiter stood at 5°12' Aquarius and Chiron at 5°15' Aries, 0.05° from an exact sextile. It was a single pass, in orb at noon from 15 December 2020 to 10 February 2021. It opened the same week as the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction: on 21 December 2020 the calculator puts Jupiter at 0°25' and Saturn at 0°27' Aquarius, and both were sextile Chiron in early Aries, about 4.5° wide. Saturn then made three exact sextiles of its own to Chiron during 2021 (Saturn sextile Chiron).

October 2024 to May 2025, waxing. After the 2023 conjunction (see Jupiter conjunct Chiron), Jupiter moved into Gemini and sextiled Chiron three times:

  • 12 October 2024: Jupiter 21°19' Gemini and Chiron 21°19' Aries, both retrograde, 0.00°. The Sun at 19°36' Libra was opposite Chiron and trine Jupiter, both within 1.71°, so Jupiter sat at the easy point between the two ends of a Sun-Chiron opposition.
  • 2 November 2024: Jupiter 20°22' Gemini, Chiron 20°22' Aries, both still retrograde, 0.00°. Moving backward at almost the same pace, they stayed within 0.19° of exact for the whole three weeks between the first two passes.
  • 18 May 2025: Jupiter 25°01' Gemini, Chiron 25°01' Aries, both direct, 0.01°.

The noon windows ran from 19 August 2024 to 2 January 2025 and from 4 April to 20 June 2025. For more on how Jupiter's sign colours a line like this, see Jupiter in Gemini. The next sextile, calculated ahead, is the waning one of 2034, exact at noon on 15 April 2034 with Jupiter in late Pisces and Chiron in late Taurus.

Finding it on your chart

On your free birth chart a sextile is a blue dashed line between ♃ and ⚷. A solid blue line would be a trine instead. In the planet table the two longitudes should differ by 54° to 66°; the sextile orb is 6°, narrower than the 8° used for the other four major aspects. Chiron appears only for births from 1920 to 2060, so outside those years there is no line to find.

Without a birth time, both bodies are drawn from local noon as an internal reference. Their separation moved at most 0.33° a day in the sample, so on all but about 0.8% of sextile dates (an estimate from interpolating between noon charts) the hour makes no difference. Read the sextile after Chiron's house and any personal-planet contacts, in the order given in how to read Chiron in your chart.
