Mars Square Chiron: When Drive Runs Into an Old Hurt
Updated October 20, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Mars square Chiron means the angle between Mars and Chiron at birth fell between 82° and 98°. Mars is the push in a chart: wanting, starting, competing, protecting and getting angry. Chiron is the place astrologers read as an old sensitivity that can, with time, become understanding. A square sets them at right angles, so going after something and feeling the sore spot can catch on each other.
Squares are uncomfortable by design, and that is part of their value. Friction gets noticed, and what gets noticed can be worked with. Nothing here is a fixed outcome.
How the square tends to show up
Flaring at the tender place. Anger may rise quickly when something brushes the old hurt, sometimes more than the moment seems to call for. Afterwards it can be hard to tell whether the reaction was about now or about then.
Holding back from the fight. The reverse also shows up: avoiding competition, softening every request, or giving up before trying, so that losing never has to be felt.
Overcorrecting. Some people swing between the two, staying quiet for a long time and then pushing far harder than planned.
Learning to fight fair. Over time this square is often linked with a hard-earned skill: setting a boundary without an attack, staying in a disagreement without leaving it, or teaching others how to stand their ground. Martial arts, sport, mediation and protective work are often named as places where that skill grows.
The psychological and evolutionary reading treats the square as practice. Where Mars sits by sign and house points to the area where that practice is most concrete.
Mars's direction says little about Chiron's here
Over 51,501 Greenwich noon charts from 1920 to 2060, one per date the calculator includes Chiron, Mars squared Chiron on 4,612 days (8.96%, roughly every eleventh day). An R stood beside Chiron on 37.4% of those days, hardly different from the 39.5% seen across the whole sample.
For the other Mars-Chiron angles, a retrograde Mars pushes Chiron's direction one way or the other. The square is the exception. Chiron was retrograde on 33.3% of square days with Mars retrograde and 37.8% with Mars direct, almost the same. A retrograde Mars stands roughly opposite the Sun, so when it is square Chiron the Sun is also roughly square Chiron, which can fall on either side of Chiron's retrograde season. On those days the Sun was anywhere from about 35° to 142° from Chiron.
The Sun was also square Chiron on 10.2% of Mars-square days. On 11.8% of square days the two bodies were in signs that do not normally square each other (an out-of-sign square).
Twice per cycle, and the longest window of all
With a waxing and a waning square in every Mars-Chiron cycle, the sample holds 157 noon windows in 141 years, a little over one a year. With Mars direct, a window lasted 12 to 49 days, most often about 25. Eleven windows contained Mars-retrograde days, and they ran 37 to 171 days.
That 171-day window, from 29 June to 16 December 1988, is the longest for any Mars-Chiron aspect in the sample, and the only one with three passes within 1° inside a single window. Mars was in late Pisces and early Aries, Chiron in early Cancer. At London noon:
- 19 July 1988: Mars 2°29' Aries, Chiron 2°34' Cancer, 0.08°, both direct.
- 22 September 1988: Mars 6°54' Aries, retrograde since about 27 August, Chiron 6°46' Cancer, 0.12°.
- 29 November 1988: Mars 5°58' Aries, direct again since about 28 October, Chiron 5°53' Cancer, now retrograde, 0.08°.
2024 to 2026: Mars in Cancer, Chiron in Aries
The same kind of loop came back with Mars in Cancer squaring Chiron in Aries.
13 October 2024, a T-square. Mars at 21°03' Cancer squared Chiron at 21°16' Aries, retrograde (0.21°). The Sun at 20°35' Libra was opposite Chiron (0.67°) and square Mars (0.46°), so Mars sat at the apex of a T-square. The wheel shows the three lines without labelling the shape; the T-square section of aspect patterns covers how it is read. The noon window ran from 29 September to 30 October.
How to confirm each leg of a figure like this is covered in the guide to the T-square.
4 February and 26 March 2025. Mars turned retrograde around 7 December 2024 at about 6°10' Leo and slipped back into Cancer. On 4 February it squared Chiron again, at 19°30' Cancer (retrograde) to 19°36' Aries (0.11°). Mars went direct around 24 February, and on 26 March the square was exact a third time, 21°54' Cancer to 21°58' Aries (0.08°). That window ran from 14 January to 21 April 2025, 98 days, with Chiron direct throughout.
27 September 2026. A simpler pass: Mars at 29°36' Cancer, Chiron at 29°38' Aries with an R, 0.03° apart, in a window from 15 September to 9 October.
Finding it on your chart
Look for a solid red line joining ♂ and ⚷ on your free birth chart. Red with dashes would mean the opposition instead. In the planet table, the two longitudes should differ by between 82° and 98°. Births before 1920 or after 2060 have no Chiron on the chart and so no Mars-Chiron line either.
No birth time? The wheel still places Mars at local noon, purely as a reference, and draws its lines from there. Since Mars covered no more than 0.8° in a day across the sample, the calendar date is almost always enough. The exceptions sit at the edge of the orb: 12.4% of square days had a noon orb less than 1° inside the limit, and 6.2% less than half a degree, so for those dates a different hour could add or remove the line. Sign, house and retrograde come next, in the order set out in how to read Chiron in your chart.
