Mars Opposite Chiron: Conflict That Mirrors an Old Hurt
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Mars opposite Chiron means the two sat across the zodiac from each other at birth, separated by 172° to 188°. Mars stands for drive, desire, assertion and anger. Chiron is read as an old sensitivity that can become a source of understanding. With the two face to face, the tension is often felt through other people: the rival, the partner, the person who pushes back.
An opposition describes a polarity to bring together, not a forecast of the people you meet. The chart offers a theme to explore, not a record of anyone's history.
How it can play out
Conflict that lands on the sore spot. Disagreements may hit harder than their content seems to explain, as if the other person had found the tender place without trying.
Assertion seen in others first. Some people with this opposition find it easier to recognise anger or ambition in someone else than to own it. Partners and competitors can seem to carry the drive while you carry the hurt, or the reverse.
Swinging between giving way and hitting back. The two ends can take turns: yielding to keep the peace, then pushing back hard when it has gone on too long.
Meeting yourself through others. In the evolutionary reading, encounters are how this opposition grows. Over time it is often linked with skill in conflict resolution, negotiation, coaching or any role that helps two sides each say what they need.
How it feels in practice depends on Mars's sign and house, and on any planet that squares both ends.
Chiron's R depends on Mars's direction
Our sample is one Greenwich noon chart for every date from 1920 through 2060 (51,501 in all, the full Chiron range). In it Mars was opposite Chiron on 2,289 days, 4.44%, about one day in 22. Chiron was retrograde on 64.5% of them, the highest share for any Mars-Chiron angle and well above its 39.5% share of all days. Mars usually stays on the Sun's side of the sky, so with Mars opposite Chiron the Sun is usually far from Chiron as well (at least 100° away on 66.8% of opposition days), which is where Chiron's retrograde season sits.
With Mars retrograde, though, Chiron was never retrograde: 0 of 242 days. A retrograde Mars stands roughly opposite the Sun, so a retrograde Mars opposite Chiron puts the Sun close to Chiron (21° away on the median such day, and conjunct Chiron on 50 of them). With Mars direct, Chiron was retrograde on 72.1% of opposition days.
On 7.2% of Mars-opposition days the Sun formed its own opposition to Chiron. In 12.3% the opposition was out of sign, with Mars and Chiron in signs that are not directly opposite.
Every two years, a week or so earlier each time
Exact oppositions came 521 to 757 days apart, about 704 on average, giving 82 noon windows in 141 years. While Chiron is in Aries, Mars makes this aspect mostly from Libra, and it has been arriving about a week earlier at each return. The closest Greenwich noon dates were 15 October 2017, 9 October 2019, 1 October 2021, 24 September 2023 and 16 September 2025, with 8 September 2027 next (Mars in Scorpio, Chiron by then in Taurus). Every one of them had Chiron retrograde and Mars direct.
16 September 2025. At London noon the calculator has Mars at 26°04' Libra and Chiron at 26°12' Aries, retrograde, 0.14° apart. Venus at 26°15' Leo was trine Chiron within 0.05°. At noon the opposition held from 5 to 27 September.
1 October 2021. Mars at 10°41' Libra opposed Chiron at 10°45' Aries, retrograde (0.06°). The Sun at 8°29' Libra was opposite Chiron too (2.26°) and conjunct Mars (2.20°), so both lines crossed the wheel together.
Without a Mars station, a window lasted 18 to 42 days, most often about 23.
2012: a retrograde Mars, and Chiron direct throughout
Eight opposition windows contained Mars-retrograde days, lasting 26 to 112 days (the longest, 25 January to 16 May 2031, is calculated ahead). The most recent was in 2012, with Mars in Virgo and Chiron in Pisces. Mars had turned retrograde around 24 January at about 23°05' Virgo.
- 22 March 2012: Mars 6°57' Virgo, retrograde, Chiron 6°54' Pisces, direct, 0.05°.
- 17 May 2012: Mars 9°29' Virgo, direct again since about 14 April, Chiron 9°26' Pisces, still direct, 0.05°.
The window ran 96 days, from 4 March to 7 June. Chiron turned retrograde only around 12 June, after the window had closed, so no day of it shows an R beside Chiron.
Finding it on your chart
The opposition is drawn on your free birth chart as a red dashed line running right across the wheel from ♂ to ⚷ (an unbroken red line is a square). The planet table should put them between 172° and 188° apart. For a birth outside 1920 to 2060, Chiron is not calculated and the line cannot appear.
If the birth time is missing, the chart uses local noon as an internal reference for Mars and still draws its lines. Mars travelled at most 0.8° per day in the sample, so the date nearly always settles whether the opposition is there. It is less clear on the 13.5% of opposition days where the noon orb was within 1° of 8° (6.8% within half a degree): on dates like that, a morning or evening birth could fall either side of the limit. The orb rules themselves are listed in aspect orbs.
