Neptune Square Chiron: Ideals, Confusion and an Old Sore Spot

Neptune square Chiron means the two were 82° to 98° apart at birth, a right angle with an 8° orb. Neptune stands for imagination, ideals, compassion and dissolving, and for the confusion that can come with them. Chiron, in modern astrology, is the sore place that tends to stay tender and can, with time, become a source of understanding. A square is a tense angle: it usually describes friction that keeps asking for an adjustment.

From 1920 to 2060 the square forms in four stretches, 1933 to 1938, 1952 to 1957, 1996 to 1997 and 2041 to 2043. Each is shared by a cohort of births, so the individual story depends on houses, when the birth time is known, and on any personal planet touching either end.

How it is usually read

An ideal that rubs on the hurt. Astrologers often describe a pattern of hoping a person, cause or belief will heal the old sensitivity, then feeling let down when reality does not match.

Confusion about the wound itself. Some readings point to difficulty seeing the sore spot clearly: it may be romanticised, denied or blamed on the wrong source.

Escape versus engagement. A common tension is between wanting to drift away from discomfort and the slower work of facing it.

Compassion earned the hard way. The square is frequently linked with a deep, practical empathy that grows out of having been confused and disappointed oneself.

These are patterns astrologers describe, never a verdict. Other factors in the chart can ease or intensify them.

Four stretches with very different pass counts

The sample of 51,501 daily Greenwich noon charts from 1920 to 2060 holds 3,482 dates with Neptune square Chiron, 6.76%, and 13.0% of them have the pair out of sign.

Stretch Dates in orb Exact passes Signs Chiron's yearly motion
May 1933 to Apr 1938 1,329 5 (1935 to 1937) Neptune in Virgo, Chiron in Gemini (briefly Taurus) about 7°
Apr 1952 to Jan 1957 1,210 3 (1954 and 1955) Neptune in Libra (later Scorpio), Chiron in Capricorn and Aquarius about 7°
Sep 1996 to Oct 1997 388 3 (1996 and 1997) Neptune in Capricorn, Chiron in Libra and Scorpio about 15° to 17°
Aug 2041 to Aug 2043 555 1 (2042) Neptune in Taurus, Chiron in Leo (briefly Cancer) about 12° to 14°

In 1935 to 1937 and in 1954 Chiron was in the slower part of its orbit, so the square held for years with several exact passes. In 1996 and 1997 Chiron moved fast near the Sun, and the whole stretch took about 13 months. In 2042 a single pass is calculated, bracketed by two near misses (1.56° in November 2041 and 1.54° in May 2043).

No pattern in the R markers

Unlike the conjunction and the opposition, the square gives the retrograde markers almost no link: Chiron was retrograde on 34.2% of square dates with Neptune retrograde and on 38.9% with Neptune direct. Both were retrograde on 13.8% of square dates, neither on 36.5%, Neptune alone on 26.5% and Chiron alone on 23.2%.

1935 to 1937: Virgo and Gemini, five passes

The main window ran from 11 March 1935 to 15 June 1937 (828 dates). Exact passes at London noon fell on 23 June 1935, 22 October 1935, 4 May 1936, 11 January 1937 and 2 March 1937. Saturn in Pisces joined in: on 11 January 1937 Saturn at 18°10' Pisces opposed Neptune at 18°50' Virgo (0.67°) and squared Chiron at 18°50' Gemini (0.68°), a T-square with Chiron at the point where the square lines meet. On 2 March 1937 Neptune at 17°45' Virgo, retrograde, and Chiron at 17°45' Gemini were exact to the minute. Gemini and Virgo are both ruled by Mercury; Neptune in Virgo covers this generation.

1954 and 1955: a cardinal T-square

  • 25 February 1954: Neptune 25°49' Libra, retrograde, and Chiron 25°50' Capricorn (0.01°).
  • 24 August 1954: Neptune 23°56' Libra and Chiron 23°54' Capricorn, retrograde (0.03°). Uranus at 25°37' Cancer squared Neptune (1.69°) and opposed Chiron (1.72°), so Neptune sat at the point of a T-square, and Pluto at 24°52' Leo sextiled Neptune (0.94°).
  • 5 January 1955: Neptune 28°04' Libra and Chiron 28°04' Capricorn (0.01°), with Jupiter at 26°16' Cancer and Uranus at 26°08' Cancer, both retrograde, opposite Chiron (1.80° and 1.94°).

Libra is ruled by Venus and Capricorn by Saturn. More in Neptune in Libra.

1996 and 1997: Capricorn and Libra

Exact passes at London noon came on 19 November 1996 (Neptune 25°30' Capricorn, Chiron 25°32' Libra, 0.04°, with Venus on Chiron at 0.07°), 7 April 1997 (Neptune 29°47' Capricorn, Chiron 29°48' Libra, retrograde, 0.01°) and 13 August 1997 (both at 27°57', Neptune retrograde, with Mars conjunct Chiron at 1.49°). See Neptune in Capricorn.

2042, calculated ahead

The 2042 pass is calculated with the same ephemeris: on 21 August 2042 Neptune at 10°21' Taurus, retrograde, and Chiron at 10°23' Leo are 0.04° apart, and Uranus at 14°03' Leo is conjunct Chiron (3.66°) and square Neptune (3.70°). Taurus is ruled by Venus and Leo by the Sun.

Finding it on your chart

On the free birth chart a square is a solid red line between ♆ and ⚷; a dashed red line is an opposition. The planet table should show the two 82° to 98° apart. For births before 1920 or after 2060 the chart has no Chiron, so this line cannot appear.

If the birth time is unknown, both are placed at local noon, a working reference rather than a guess at the hour. The separation moved by at most 0.18° a day, so the hour could decide the line on only about 0.3% of square dates (estimated by interpolating between noon charts). How to read Chiron in your chart shows where an aspect like this fits.
