Neptune Trine Chiron: Gentle Understanding of an Old Hurt
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Neptune trine Chiron means the two were 112° to 128° apart at birth (8° either side of 120°). Neptune is associated with imagination, compassion, ideals and the wish to merge with something larger. Chiron, in modern astrology, is an enduring tender spot that can become a source of understanding over time. A trine is a harmonious angle: the two themes tend to flow into each other without much friction, which can be a gift and also a reason to leave them unexamined.
This is the Neptune-Chiron line of the 1920s and the 1960s: it is in orb on 82.3% and 81.6% of the dates of those two decades, so it reads first as a generational mood. A known birth time adds the two houses involved, and any personal planet on either end makes it more individual.
Readings astrologers offer
Empathy that comes naturally. A frequent reading is an easy, unforced sympathy for other people's pain, often without needing to be told what is wrong.
Healing through the imagination. Astrologers commonly connect this trine with finding relief in music, art, prayer, meditation or nature, and with offering the same to others.
Softness toward one's own wound. Some describe a gentle, forgiving attitude to old hurts, which can help, or can let a problem drift without being addressed.
Idealism that stays kind. The trine is often linked with hopes that lean toward care rather than rescue fantasies.
As everywhere on Astrologist.com, these describe possibilities, and the chart as a whole decides how much weight they carry.
One date in six
Of the 51,501 daily Greenwich noon charts from 1920 to 2060, 9,118 carry Neptune trine Chiron: 17.70%, the highest share of any Neptune-Chiron angle. Only 9.3% of trine dates are out of sign.
| Date span (first to last in-orb date) | Dates in orb | Exact passes | Signs | Ahead in zodiac order |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 1920 to Feb 1930 | 3,060 | 13 (May 1920 to Jan 1926) | Neptune in Leo (finally Virgo), Chiron in Aries and Taurus | Neptune |
| May 1959 to Feb 1974 | 3,650 | 11 (May 1963 to Jan 1968) | Neptune in Scorpio (finally Sagittarius), Chiron in Aquarius, Pisces and Aries | Chiron |
| Aug 1994 to Sep 1995 | 386 | 3 | Neptune in Capricorn, Chiron in Virgo and Libra | Neptune |
| Dec 2043 to Sep 2045 | 430 | 3 | Neptune in Taurus, Chiron in Virgo | Chiron |
| Feb 2055 to Dec 2060 | 1,592 | 5 (2057 and 2058) | Neptune in Gemini, Chiron in Capricorn and Aquarius | Neptune |
Each date span runs from the first to the last in-orb date, so the two long spans contain several separate in-orb windows, and "dates in orb" adds those windows together.
The two long spans hold most of the total. Both came while Chiron was in the slow, far part of its orbit, moving about 3.4° to 3.9° a year through Aries in the 1920s and Pisces in the 1960s, against Neptune's 2.1° to 2.3°. With only a degree or so of difference each year, the angle stayed within orb for years at a time (6.4 years from January 1920, 4.5 years from December 1962), and each retrograde loop brought another exact pass, usually two a year. The 1994 to 1995 and 2044 to 2045 trines came when Chiron was moving about 17° a year, and each main window lasted about 13 months.
The R markers lean apart
With 120° between them, the Sun is often far enough from one body to make it retrograde but too close to the other. Chiron was retrograde on only 21.9% of trine dates with Neptune retrograde, against 58.7% with Neptune direct. Both were retrograde on 9.9% of trine dates, neither on 22.6%, Neptune alone on 35.5% and Chiron alone on 32.0%.
The 1920s: Leo and Aries
At London noon on 11 May 1920 Neptune and Chiron stood at 8°52' Leo and 8°52' Aries, 0.01° apart, with Jupiter at 10°10' Leo conjunct Neptune (1.30°) and trine Chiron (1.31°), a fire trine shared by three bodies. On 26 September 1923 Chiron at 19°30' Aries, retrograde, trined Neptune at 19°28' Leo (0.02°), and Saturn at 20°31' Libra opposed Chiron (1.02°) and sextiled Neptune (1.04°). The last pass came on 24 January 1926 (Neptune 23°56' Leo retrograde, Chiron 23°57' Aries, 0.02°). Leo is ruled by the Sun and Aries by Mars. Neptune in Leo covers this generation.
The 1960s: Scorpio and Pisces, with Uranus and Pluto
Every trine date from 29 December 1962 to 29 May 1968 also had Neptune sextile Pluto, and on 1,567 of those 1,956 dates Pluto, in Virgo, was opposite Chiron. On 17 October 1965 at London noon Neptune at 18°47' Scorpio trined Chiron at 18°46' Pisces, retrograde (0.01°), while Uranus at 17°35' Virgo and Pluto at 17°24' Virgo opposed Chiron (1.19° and 1.38°) and sextiled Neptune: Neptune connected to both ends of that opposition by easy angles. Earlier exact passes include 9 May 1963 (both at 14°11', 0.00°) and the last fell on 18 January 1968 (both at 26°05', 0.00°). Scorpio has Pluto as its modern ruler and Mars as its traditional ruler, and Pisces has Neptune as its modern ruler and Jupiter as its traditional ruler, so Neptune here aspects a body in a sign it rules in modern astrology. See Neptune in Scorpio.
1994 and 1995: earth trine with Uranus on Neptune
On every date of this window Uranus was conjunct Neptune in Capricorn. At London noon on 21 October 1994 Neptune at 20°40' Capricorn and Chiron at 20°41' Virgo were 0.02° apart, with Uranus at 22°33' Capricorn trine Chiron (1.86°). The other passes came on 25 February 1995 (0.01°) and 24 July 1995 (0.05°); on the July date Saturn at 24°28' Pisces opposed Chiron (0.56°) and sextiled Neptune (0.51°). Capricorn is ruled by Saturn and Virgo by Mercury.
2044 to 2060, calculated ahead
These later passes are calculated with the same ephemeris. In Taurus and Virgo the trine is exact on 17 October 2044, 7 April 2045 and 20 July 2045. From Gemini to Aquarius it returns on 10 February 2057 (Neptune 9°02' Gemini retrograde, Chiron 9°03' Aquarius, 0.01°) and four more times through 2 December 2058, and it is still in orb when the calculator's Chiron range ends on 31 December 2060.
Finding it on your chart
On the free birth chart a trine is a solid blue line between ♆ and ⚷, spanning about a third of the wheel. In the planet table the two should be 112° to 128° apart. Births before 1920 or after 2060 have no Chiron on the chart, so the line does not appear for them.
When the birth time is missing, the chart uses local noon for both as a calculation reference, never as a stated birth time. Their separation changed by at most 0.18° in a day, so the hour could only decide the line on about 0.4% of trine dates (an estimate from interpolating between noon charts).
