Sun Opposite Chiron: Meeting the Sore Spot in Other People
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Sun opposite Chiron means the Sun and Chiron were 172° to 188° apart when you were born, on opposite sides of the zodiac. Oppositions are usually read as aspects of awareness through contrast. What sits across the chart from the Sun tends to be met in other people before it is recognised as one's own.
With Chiron in that position, the tender spot often shows up in relationships first. Astrologers describe it less as an inner sore point and more as a recurring theme in who you meet and the roles you fall into with them.
How it can play out
The helper and the helped. Some people with this opposition find themselves cast, again and again, as the one who looks after someone else's hurt. Others notice the reverse: a pull toward people who seem to have the answers to their own.
A mirror in other people. A partner, a client or a teacher may embody the very sensitivity the person finds hardest to own. That can be uncomfortable, and it can also be the clearest view of it they get.
Fairness and self-assertion. Because the Sun and Chiron face each other, questions of give and take tend to matter: when to stand up for yourself, and when standing up would cost a connection you value.
Learning through encounter. The understanding Chiron is associated with often grows here through conversation and relationship rather than solitary reflection.
The developmental task, in the evolutionary reading, is to take back what has been projected: to notice the theme in yourself as well as in the people you are drawn to. The opposition describes a dynamic, not a fixed story about anyone's relationships.
Chiron is retrograde every time
Of the 51,501 Greenwich noon charts in our sample, one for every date from the start of 1920 to the end of 2060 (the span in which Chiron is calculated), the opposition appeared on 4.1%, about one day in 24. On every one of those 2,127 days Chiron was retrograde.
An opposition is the moment when Earth passes between the Sun and Chiron. That overtaking is exactly what makes Chiron look as though it is moving backward, so the opposition sits in the middle of the retrograde season: 62 to 79 days after Chiron turned retrograde and 66 to 79 days before it turned direct. In a chart with this aspect, the R beside ⚷ is part of the package. Outer planets retrograde in the natal chart explains why that deserves a light touch.
The retrograde motion also makes the window short. Chiron is sliding backward through the zodiac while the Sun moves forward, so the angle between them changes faster and the pass took only 14 to 16 days, against 17 to 20 for the conjunction. The exact opposition came every 368 to 384 days, and three calendar years in the range (1939, 1989 and 2040) had none.
October 1977: the opposition behind Chiron's discovery
Around opposition an outer body is at its closest to Earth for the year and is visible all night, which is when slow, distant objects are easiest to pick out. Charles Kowal found Chiron on 1 November 1977, on photographs taken at Palomar Observatory on 18 October.
The calculator shows how close to opposition that was. At London noon on 18 October 1977 the Sun was at 24°57' Libra and Chiron at 3°49' Taurus, retrograde: just under 9° short of exact, so a chart for that day draws no opposition line. The window opened the next day and ran to 3 November, with the exact opposition around 26 October (Sun 2°57' Scorpio, Chiron 3°26' Taurus, 0.48° at noon). Chiron was near the far end of its orbit then, far too faint to see without a large telescope. The JPL Small-Body Database lists the discovery details and current orbit. Mercury was opposite Chiron in the same week, exact around 23 October; Mercury opposite Chiron has that chart.
October 2026: the last Aries opposition in the range
Chiron entered Taurus in June 2026 and slipped back into Aries on 18 September. The 2026 opposition window runs from 14 to 29 October, with the Sun in Libra and Chiron retrograde in late Aries. At London noon on 21 October the calculator has the Sun at 28°04' Libra and Chiron at 28°33' Aries, 0.49° apart. The Full Moon of 26 October falls inside that window, with the Moon on Chiron; see Moon conjunct Chiron. Venus is retrograde through the same weeks and opposite Chiron as well, exact around 28 October; Venus opposite Chiron follows that loop.
Chiron re-enters Taurus on 14 April 2027 for a long stay and does not reach Aries again before the calculator's range ends in 2060, so this is the last Sun-Chiron opposition with Chiron in Aries that the range contains. For the generation born with Chiron in Aries from 2018 to 2027, the opposition meant a birthday from mid-September to late October, with the Sun in Libra on 113 of the 136 sampled opposition days.
On 13.9% of sampled opposition days the two were out of sign, for example the Sun in late Libra and Chiron in early Taurus, as in the first days of the 1977 window.
Finding it on your chart
On your free birth chart an opposition is a dashed red line running across the wheel between ☉ and ⚷. Check that the positions in the planet table are 172° to 188° apart. Chiron is included only for birth dates from 1920 to 2060; beyond that the chart says it is not included, and no Chiron line appears.
Without a birth time the Sun is placed at local noon as a reference only. On 6.8% of sampled opposition days the noon separation was within half a degree of the 8° limit, so for those dates the birth hour decides whether the line is drawn.
