Moon Conjunct Chiron: Feelings Sitting Right on the Sore Spot

Moon conjunct Chiron means the Moon was within 8° of Chiron when you were born. The Moon describes emotional needs, comfort and the instinctive ways a person looks after themselves and others. Chiron is the small body astrologers read as a sore spot that stays tender and, worked with over time, becomes a source of understanding. With the two in the same place, feelings and that tender spot are hard to separate.

The Moon passes Chiron about 13.4 times a year and stays within orb for 25 to 33 hours each time. That short window makes the birth time more important here than for almost any other Chiron contact.

Patterns people describe

Sensitivity close to the surface. A common description is feeling things quickly and deeply, especially where care, belonging or being looked after are concerned. Small slights can register as larger than they look from outside.

Early care as the theme. Astrologers often connect the Moon with whoever and whatever provided comfort in childhood. Some astrologers see this conjunction as a sign that something in that early climate felt missing, unsteady or hard to rely on. The chart does not record what actually happened; it points to the area a person may keep returning to.

The natural carer. Many people with this placement are good at noticing when someone else is hurting, and at offering the kind of comfort they once wanted. The risk is looking after everyone except yourself.

Self-soothing as a skill. In the psychological and evolutionary reading, the work of this conjunction is learning to meet your own needs with the same patience you give others. Over time the tender spot can become a quiet emotional intelligence rather than a constant alarm.

These are tendencies to compare with experience, not fixed outcomes. The Moon's sign, house and other aspects shape how any of them shows up.

Why the birth time decides it

Our sample is one Greenwich chart at noon for each of the 51,501 days from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060, the span in which the calculator includes Chiron, with the Moon and Chiron interpolated between consecutive noons. On 8.1% of those dates the conjunction formed at some hour. Only about a tenth of them had it all day long, so on the rest a morning birth and an evening birth can differ.

At noon itself, 4.4% of the sampled charts showed the conjunction, about one day in 23. In 12.4% of those, the Moon and Chiron were in different signs: an out-of-sign conjunction, which still counts because the calculator measures the angle, not the sign.

The Moon's phase tells you whether Chiron is retrograde

Whether Chiron carries an R depends on its angle to the Sun, and a Moon conjunct Chiron ties that angle to the Moon's phase. If the Moon is on Chiron at a New Moon, the Sun is close to Chiron as well, and Chiron is direct. If the Moon is on Chiron at a Full Moon, the Sun is roughly opposite Chiron, and Chiron is retrograde.

Our sample bears that out exactly. On noon charts with this conjunction and the Moon within about a day of the exact New Moon, Chiron was direct every time (154 days). With the Moon within about a day of the exact Full Moon, Chiron was retrograde every time (139 days). Between those phases it could go either way. The Sun side of each case is described in Sun conjunct Chiron and Sun opposite Chiron.

April and October 2026: one of each

New Moon on Chiron. On 17 April 2026 the New Moon fell at 12:50 London time (BST). The calculator has the Sun at 27°29' Aries, the Moon at 27°27' Aries and Chiron at 26°41' Aries, direct: the Moon 0.77° from Chiron and the Sun 0.8°. In London the Moon was in orb from 22:30 on 16 April to 00:45 on 18 April. A similar triple contact happened at the total solar eclipse of 8 April 2024.

Full Moon on Chiron. On 26 October 2026 the Full Moon falls at 04:10 London time (GMT), with the Moon at 2°44' Taurus opposite the Sun at 2°45' Scorpio. Chiron is at 28°20' Aries, retrograde, so the conjunction is 4.4° wide and out of sign: a Taurus Moon on an Aries Chiron. The Moon is in orb from about 07:30 on 25 October to 10:15 on 26 October, closest around 20:45 on the 25th. UK clocks go back early on 25 October, so the whole window is on GMT.

Finding it on your chart

Leave the birth time blank and this conjunction cannot show: the wheel then puts the Moon at its noon degree for reference and omits each Moon aspect line, a choice explained in finding your Moon sign without a birth time. Enter the time and look on your free birth chart for a short amber line, or ☽ and ⚷ printed almost on top of each other, with no more than 8° between them in the planet table. Chiron is only shown for birth dates from 1920 to 2060; outside that range a note replaces the Chiron glyph and no Moon-Chiron line can be drawn.
