Moon Opposite Chiron: Needs, Hurts and the People Who Mirror Them
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Moon opposite Chiron means the Moon and Chiron were 172° to 188° apart when you were born, on opposite sides of the zodiac. The Moon stands for emotional needs and the habits that make a person feel safe. Chiron is read as a tender spot that can turn into hard-won understanding. An opposition puts them face to face, so the pattern is often experienced through someone else rather than purely inside.
Patterns people describe
Needs that show up in relationships. A common version is noticing the sore spot mainly in close relationships: feeling unsupported by the very people you lean on, or being drawn to people whose hurt resembles your own.
Carer and cared-for. Astrologers often describe this opposition as a swing between looking after others and wanting to be looked after. Some people take the carer role so firmly that it becomes hard to receive help; others feel let down when care does not arrive in the form they hoped for.
Moods set off by other people. Because the opposition works across the chart, other people's reactions can stir up feelings quickly. Learning which feelings are about the present and which are older is a recurring theme.
Learning through encounter. In the evolutionary reading, the opposition is where awareness grows through contact. Seeing your own needs reflected in another person can make them easier to understand and to meet.
None of this is fixed. The Moon's sign and house, and any planet aspecting both ends, can change how the opposition plays out.
A short window, so the hour matters
The Moon reaches the point opposite Chiron about 13.4 times a year and stays within orb for 25 to 33 hours, depending on its speed. Across our sample of Greenwich noon charts for every day from 1920 to 2060 (51,501 of them, the whole period for which Chiron is calculated), with the hours in between filled in by interpolation, the opposition was present for part of the day on 8.1% of dates and for the entire day on only about a tenth of those. At noon, 4.5% of the charts showed it, about one day in 22, and 13.4% of those were out of sign, with the Moon and Chiron in signs that do not normally face each other.
New Moon or Full Moon: the reverse of the conjunction
Chiron's direction is set by its distance from the Sun. At a New or Full Moon that distance can be read straight from the Moon's position.
- At a Full Moon the Sun is opposite the Moon, so a Moon opposite Chiron puts the Sun close to Chiron. On every sampled noon with this opposition within about a day of the exact Full Moon, Chiron was direct (161 days).
- At a New Moon the Sun is with the Moon, so both are roughly opposite Chiron. On every sampled noon with this opposition within about a day of the exact New Moon, Chiron was retrograde (140 days).
That is the mirror image of Moon conjunct Chiron, where a Full Moon means retrograde and a New Moon means direct.
13 April 2025: a Full Moon across Chiron
The Full Moon of April 2025 fell at 01:20 London time (BST) on 13 April. The calculator gives the Moon at 23°18' Libra, the Sun at 23°20' Aries and Chiron at 23°00' Aries, direct. The Moon was 0.3° from opposite Chiron and the Sun 0.33° from conjunct it, so the Full Moon axis lay almost exactly along the Sun-Chiron line. In London the opposition was in orb from 08:30 on 12 April to 17:15 on 13 April.
Six months later came the reverse case. The New Moon of 21 October 2025, at 13:30 BST, put the Sun and Moon at about 28° Libra, 3.7° from opposite Chiron at 24°41' Aries, which was retrograde. That window ran from 14:15 on 20 October to 22:15 on 21 October. The Sun-side reading of that alignment is on Sun opposite Chiron.
Finding it on your chart
The line only appears when a birth time is entered. Without one, the free chart places the Moon at local noon as a date reference and omits all Moon aspect lines, because the noon position is not the natal Moon; see finding your Moon sign without a birth time. With a time, look on your free birth chart for a dashed red line across the wheel between ☽ and ⚷, and check that the planet table puts them 172° to 188° apart. Chiron is included for birth dates from 1920 to 2060 only.
