Pluto Square Chiron: Pressure, Control and a Wound That Asks for Change

← Back to Aspects

In a chart with Pluto square Chiron the two bodies are roughly a quarter of the zodiac apart, anywhere from 82° to 98° (the square allows 8° either side of 90°). Pluto is associated with power, intensity, control and deep change; Chiron, in modern astrology, marks an old hurt that stays sensitive and that can, slowly, turn into insight. Astrologers treat the square as a tense angle: it tends to describe friction that keeps asking for some adjustment.

Between 1920 and 2060 the square forms in five stretches: 1920 to 1925, 1946 to 1948, 1992 to 1994, 2024 to 2033 and 2049 to 2051. Everyone born in one of those stretches shares the line, so what makes it individual is the houses involved, if the birth time is known, and any personal planet tied to Pluto or Chiron.

How it is often read

Pressure on the sore spot. Astrologers frequently describe situations that push on the old hurt until it can no longer be ignored.

Control as protection. A common reading is a tendency to guard the tender place by controlling circumstances, people or feelings, and the strain that this creates.

Upheaval as a turning point. Some readings connect the square with periods when a crisis forces a rethink of how the hurt is carried.

Hard-won strength. The developmental direction often named is resilience that comes from facing the friction directly, and respect for other people's limits that comes from knowing one's own.

Astrologers offer these as tendencies, not a verdict, and the rest of the chart can soften or strengthen any of them.

Five stretches, the longest from 2024

Counting one Greenwich noon chart per day from 1920 to 2060, 51,501 charts in all, 5,310 dates carry Pluto square Chiron, 10.31%, the most of any Pluto-Chiron angle; on 9.8% of them the two sit in signs that are not themselves square to each other. "Chiron ahead" marks the opening square that follows a conjunction, "Pluto ahead" the closing square before the next one; the chart line looks the same.

Date span (first to last in-orb date) Dates in orb Exact passes Signs Ahead in zodiac order
Jan 1920 to Jan 1925 1,445 3 (Mar 1920 to Feb 1921) Pluto in Cancer, Chiron in Aries Pluto
Dec 1946 to Oct 1948 436 1 (14 Nov 1947) Pluto in Leo, Chiron in Scorpio Chiron
Jul 1992 to Jun 1994 515 3 (Oct 1992 to Jul 1993) Pluto in Scorpio, Chiron in Leo then Virgo Pluto
Jul 2024 to Apr 2033 2,426 5 (Jul 2028 to Apr 2030) Pluto in Aquarius (briefly Capricorn), Chiron in Aries then Taurus Chiron
Nov 2049 to Sep 2051 488 3 (all in 2050) Pluto in Pisces, Chiron in Sagittarius (briefly Scorpio) Pluto

Each date span runs from the first to the last in-orb date and may hold several separate windows; "dates in orb" counts all of them. The 1920 span was already in orb on 1 January 1920, where the calculator's Chiron range begins.

After the 1941 conjunction, Chiron was moving about 15° a year and reached the opening square about six years later, with a single exact pass on 14 November 1947. After the 1999 conjunction the opening square is exact only from 9 July 2028, about 28.5 years later, with Chiron moving about 4° a year; the slow approach gives five exact passes instead of one.

The R markers show no link

On the square the two retrograde markers are almost independent of each other. Chiron was retrograde on 42.6% of square dates with Pluto retrograde and on 41.5% with Pluto direct. Of all square dates, 21.0% have both retrograde, 29.7% neither, 28.3% Pluto only and 21.0% Chiron only.

1920 to 1925: Cancer and Aries between two trines

At London noon the three exact passes fell on 14 March 1920 (Pluto 5°40' Cancer, retrograde, Chiron 5°39' Aries, 0.03°), 17 September 1920 (both at 8°49', Chiron retrograde, 0.01°) and 7 February 1921 (Pluto 7°07' Cancer, retrograde, Chiron 7°08' Aries, 0.01°). On all 1,445 square dates of 1920 to 1925 Uranus, in Pisces apart from a few weeks of 1920 in Aquarius, trined Pluto, and on 1,437 of them Neptune in Leo trined Chiron, so each end of the square had an easy link of its own. On 17 September 1920 Mars at 8°14' Sagittarius trined Chiron (0.59°) and the North Node at 8°35' Scorpio trined Pluto (0.23°). Cancer is ruled by the Moon and Aries by Mars. See Pluto in Cancer.

1947: a single pass in Leo and Scorpio

The only exact pass of this stretch came on 14 November 1947, with Pluto at 14°56' Leo and Chiron at 14°53' Scorpio (0.06°), and the Sun at 21°16' Scorpio conjunct Chiron (6.38°). Saturn in Leo squared Chiron on 333 of the 436 square dates of 1946 to 1948 and was conjunct Pluto on 262; on 197 dates it did both. Leo is ruled by the Sun. Scorpio has Pluto as its modern ruler and Mars as its traditional ruler, so here Chiron sits in the sign that modern astrology gives to Pluto.

1992 and 1993: Scorpio and Leo, with a fixed T-square

London noon puts the passes on 25 October 1992 (Pluto 22°03' Scorpio, Chiron 22°03' Leo, 0.01°, with Mercury at 25°07' Scorpio conjunct Pluto), 2 December 1992 (Pluto 23°33' Scorpio, Chiron 23°34' Leo, 0.01°, with Mercury at 22°19' Scorpio conjunct Pluto, 1.23°) and 10 July 1993 (Pluto 22°52' Scorpio, retrograde, Chiron 22°49' Leo, 0.04°). On 220 of the 515 square dates, from July 1992 to March 1994, Saturn, mostly in Aquarius, opposed Chiron and squared Pluto, a T-square with Saturn and Chiron across from each other and Pluto at the apex. Pluto in Scorpio covers this cohort.

2024 to 2033: Aquarius and Taurus, with Saturn on Chiron

This stretch begins with births of 4 July 2024. It first reached orb in three short windows in 2024, 2025 and 2026 (504 dates), while Chiron was in Aries apart from a brief entry into Taurus in 2026, and those came no closer than 2.98°, on 23 August 2026. The main window runs from 23 March 2027 to 21 July 2031 (1,582 dates). Dates after October 2026 on this page are calculated ahead with the same ephemeris. The five exact passes, at London noon:

  • 9 July 2028: Pluto 8°04' Aquarius, retrograde, and Chiron 8°05' Taurus (0.01°). Saturn at 9°38' Taurus is conjunct Chiron (1.55°) and square Pluto (1.56°), and Neptune at 8°54' Aries sextiles Pluto (0.82°).
  • 24 October 2028: Pluto 6°24' Aquarius and Chiron 6°26' Taurus, retrograde (0.03°), with Saturn at 8°19' Taurus, retrograde, still on Chiron (1.89°).
  • 2 June 2029: Pluto 10°20' Aquarius, retrograde, and Chiron 10°18' Taurus (0.03°).
  • 9 December 2029: both at 8°36', Chiron retrograde (0.01°).
  • 28 April 2030: Pluto 12°00' Aquarius and Chiron 12°01' Taurus (0.01°), with the Sun at 8°13' Taurus and Mars at 14°55' Taurus both conjunct Chiron (about 3.8° and 2.9°).

Saturn is conjunct Chiron on 607 dates from June 2027 to June 2029, and every one of them falls inside this square. The long Neptune-Pluto sextile, in orb on most dates from 1941 to 2040, holds on all 2,426 square dates of the stretch. Aquarius has Uranus as its modern ruler and Saturn as its traditional ruler, and Taurus is ruled by Venus. See Pluto in Aquarius and Saturn conjunct Chiron.

2050, calculated ahead

Three passes fall in 2050, on 11 January, 3 May and 11 October, with Pluto in Pisces and Chiron in Sagittarius and Pluto ahead. On 3 May 2050 Saturn at 8°44' Aquarius sextiles Chiron at 10°25' Sagittarius, retrograde (1.68°). Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, and Pisces has Neptune as its modern ruler and Jupiter as its traditional ruler, so Jupiter has a hand in both signs.

Reading it off the chart

A square appears on the free birth chart as an unbroken red line from ♇ to ⚷, while the dashed red line belongs to the opposition. Check the planet table too: the two longitudes should differ by 82° to 98°. Chiron is only calculated for births from 1920 to 2060, so outside those years neither Chiron nor this line is shown.

For a chart without a birth time, local noon is used as a fixed reference for the positions, which is not the same as claiming the person was born at noon. The gap between Pluto and Chiron changed by no more than 0.17° in a day, so an unknown hour could alter the line on only about 0.3% of square dates (based on interpolating between the noon charts). The guide how to read Chiron in your chart places an aspect like this within the rest of a reading.
