Pluto Trine Chiron: Steady Renewal Around an Old Sensitivity
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Pluto trine Chiron describes a birth chart in which Pluto and Chiron are about a third of the zodiac apart, between 112° and 128° (an 8° orb around 120°). Pluto is linked with depth, power and the process of breaking down and renewing; Chiron, in modern astrology, with a place of old hurt that can, given time, become a source of compassion and practical know-how. A trine is usually read as an easy flow between the two, a talent that does not have to be fought for.
From 1920 to 2060 the trine forms in four runs: 1949 to 1951, 1988 to 1991, 2035 to 2039 and 2047 to 2048. Each run is shared by a large group of births, so houses (when the birth time is known) and personal planets carry the individual note.
How it is usually interpreted
Ease with deep material. Astrologers often describe a comfort with subjects others find heavy, such as loss, illness or psychological depth.
Recovery as a skill. A frequent reading is a capacity to come back from setbacks connected with the old hurt, sometimes faster than expected.
Quiet influence. Some readings link the trine with helping others change without pushing, through steady presence rather than pressure.
The risk of coasting. Because trines flow easily, the gift can go unused; the growth often named is choosing to put it to work.
These are possible patterns, not facts about anyone. The rest of the chart shapes how, and whether, they show up.
Four runs, three passes each
In the 51,501 daily Greenwich noon charts from 1920 to 2060, Pluto trine Chiron appears on 2,866 dates, 5.56%, and only 3.2% of them are out of sign. Apart from those few out-of-sign dates at the edges, each run sits in a single element. "Chiron ahead" marks the opening trines that follow a conjunction, "Pluto ahead" the closing ones before the next.
| Date span (first to last in-orb date) | Dates in orb | Exact passes | Signs | Element | Ahead in zodiac order |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feb 1949 to Nov 1951 | 619 | 3 (Jan to Nov 1950) | Pluto in Leo, Chiron in Sagittarius | fire | Chiron |
| Jul 1988 to Jun 1991 | 793 | 3 (Aug 1989 to Jun 1990) | Pluto in Scorpio, Chiron in Cancer | water | Pluto |
| Jul 2035 to Jun 2039 | 1,070 | 3 (Jul 2037 to May 2038) | Pluto in Aquarius, Chiron in Gemini (at the end Cancer) | air | Chiron |
| Oct 2047 to Oct 2048 | 384 | 3 (Nov 2047 to Aug 2048) | Pluto in Pisces, Chiron in Scorpio (briefly Libra) | water | Pluto |
Each date span runs from the first to the last in-orb date. In every run all three passes fall inside one main window: 15 November 1949 to 11 January 1951 (423 dates), 25 May 1989 to 22 August 1990 (455), 19 March 2037 to 7 August 2038 (507), and 1 October 2047 to 18 October 2048 (384, the whole of that run). The other dates come from shorter windows before and after.
Three passes means the exact point was crossed, crossed back during a retrograde loop and crossed once more; in the main windows Chiron was moving about 7° to 16° a year. The runs also show how uneven the cycle is: the opening trine of 1950 came within about nine years of the 1941 conjunction, while the one of 2037 and 2038 comes 37 to 38 years after the 1999 conjunction.
The R markers lean apart
Chiron was retrograde on only 19.4% of trine dates with Pluto retrograde, against 53.4% with Pluto direct. Both were retrograde on 8.8% of trine dates, neither on 25.3%, Pluto alone on 36.8% and Chiron alone on 29.1%. At about 120° apart the Sun is seldom far enough from both at once to turn them retrograde together.
1950: the fire trine, with Neptune between
Passes at London noon came on 16 January 1950 (Pluto 17°29' Leo, retrograde, Chiron 17°27' Sagittarius, 0.03°), 8 July 1950 (both at 16°49', Chiron retrograde, 0.00°) and 3 November 1950 (Pluto 19°46' Leo, Chiron 19°44' Sagittarius, 0.04°). Neptune in Libra sat between them: it sextiled Pluto on every one of the 619 trine dates and Chiron on 482 of them. On 16 January Neptune at 17°21' Libra was 0.13° from an exact sextile to Pluto and 0.10° from one to Chiron, and Venus at 18°00' Aquarius, retrograde, opposed Pluto (0.52°) and sextiled Chiron (0.55°). Saturn, mostly in Virgo, squared Chiron on 444 of the trine dates, 1.71° from exact that day. Leo is ruled by the Sun and Sagittarius by Jupiter. See Pluto in Leo.
1989 and 1990: the water trine, with Neptune opposite Chiron
The second run came with Pluto in Scorpio, the sign it rules in modern astrology (Mars is the traditional ruler), and Chiron in Cancer, ruled by the Moon. Neptune in Capricorn opposed Chiron on 695 of the 793 trine dates and sextiled Pluto on all of them, and Saturn opposed Chiron on 417; Neptune opposite Chiron covers that line. Passes at London noon:
- 7 August 1989: Pluto 12°25' Scorpio, Chiron 12°26' Cancer (0.01°). Neptune at 10°06' Capricorn, retrograde, opposed Chiron (2.33°) and sextiled Pluto (2.32°), and Saturn at 8°14' Capricorn, retrograde, did the same within about 4.2°.
- 27 November 1989: Pluto 15°54' Scorpio, Chiron 15°53' Cancer, retrograde (0.02°), with Mars at 15°43' Scorpio on Pluto (0.18°) and trine Chiron (0.16°).
- 10 June 1990: Pluto 15°30' Scorpio, retrograde, Chiron 15°33' Cancer (0.05°), with Jupiter at 14°47' Cancer conjunct Chiron (0.76°) and trine Pluto (0.71°).
See Pluto in Scorpio and Chiron in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces.
2037 to 2048, calculated ahead
The last two runs are calculated with the same ephemeris. The air trine has passes on 12 July 2037, 13 January 2038 and 17 May 2038, with Pluto in Aquarius and Chiron in Gemini; Neptune, at the end of Aries or early in Taurus, sextiles both on 216 of its 1,070 dates. On 13 January 2038 Pluto is at 21°31' Aquarius and Chiron at 21°30' Gemini, retrograde (0.01°). Aquarius has Uranus as its modern ruler and Saturn as its traditional ruler; Gemini is ruled by Mercury.
The water trine of 23 November 2047, 6 May 2048 and 18 August 2048 puts Pluto in Pisces and Chiron in Scorpio, and Uranus in Virgo opposes Pluto on 381 of its 384 dates. On 6 May 2048 Uranus at 7°03' Virgo, retrograde, opposes Pluto at 7°52' Pisces (0.83°) and sextiles Chiron at 7°55' Scorpio, retrograde (0.87°). See Pluto in Aquarius for the 2030s cohort.
Where it shows on the chart
On the free birth chart look for a solid blue line joining ♇ and ⚷ across roughly a third of the wheel; the dashed blue line is the sextile. The planet table should give longitudes 112° to 128° apart. Charts for births outside 1920 to 2060 carry no Chiron, so the trine cannot be drawn there.
A chart entered without a birth time still needs positions, so the calculator uses local noon for them as a working reference, not as a statement about when the person was born. With the Pluto-Chiron gap changing by 0.17° a day at most, the missing hour could matter on only about 0.4% of trine dates (from interpolating between noon charts).
