Uranus Square Chiron: Sudden Shifts and the Friction of an Old Hurt
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Uranus square Chiron means the two were 82° to 98° apart at birth. Uranus is the planet of change, surprise, independence and breaking with convention. Chiron marks the tender place in a chart, read in modern astrology as an old hurt that can, with time, turn into understanding. A square is the angle of friction, so the usual reading is that the urge for change and the old sensitivity rub against each other: what one part wants to shake up, the other wants protected.
Uranus-Chiron squares come in bursts of two to five years, and in 1920 to 2060 there are three: 1942 to 1944, 1996 to 1998 and 2050 to 2054. Each burst is shared by a cohort of births, so the personal story lies in the houses the two occupy (with a known birth time) and in any personal planet that joins them.
How the square is often read
Change that scrapes the sore place. A common description is that upheaval, a move or a sudden choice tends to touch exactly the sensitivity a person would rather keep covered.
Rebellion as protection. Some astrologers see a habit of breaking away fast whenever the old feeling surfaces, so that independence doubles as a shield.
Impatience with slow repair. The square may show up as frustration with methods that take time, and a search for a breakthrough instead.
Inventive solutions. The constructive side is an original way of working with difficulty, often one that others had not tried, found because the usual route felt impossible.
All of this is offered as pattern, not prediction. Nothing in a birth chart says what someone lived through, or how they chose to meet it.
Three bursts, and why the passes differ
Over 51,501 Greenwich noon charts, one per date from 1920 through 2060 (the years in which the calculator includes Chiron), Uranus was square Chiron on 2,104 dates: 4.09%, about one in 24. Out-of-sign squares made up 21.8% of them, the highest share of the five Uranus-Chiron aspects, so checking the degrees matters more here than matching signs.
- 13 October 1942 to 11 September 1944: 489 dates in orb across three windows, one exact pass.
- 31 October 1996 to 25 September 1998: 490 dates in three windows, one exact pass.
- 26 February 2050 to 25 December 2054: 1,125 dates in five windows, five exact passes, calculated ahead.
The difference is Chiron's speed. In 1943 Chiron covered 16.8° a year against Uranus's 4.4°, and in 1997 15.3° against 3.8°, so the gap changed by more than 11° a year and the retrograde loops could bring it back to exact only once. Both bursts also had near-misses: within 2.11° on 29 December 1942 and 0.85° on 6 June 1944, and within 0.51° on 21 June 1998, all at London noon. By 2051 and 2052 Chiron has slowed to 10.2° and 9.2° a year against Uranus's 4.8°, the gap moves only about 5° a year, and the loops cross it again and again.
Who leads matters
A square can come with either body ahead. In 1943 and the 2050s Chiron was 90° ahead of Uranus in zodiac order; in 1997 Uranus was 90° ahead of Chiron. The chart reading is the same square, but the later timing is not, because it depends on how far each body has to travel to reach the other's birth position. The calculator does not compute transits, so this is background worked out from the noon sample for people born on the exact pass dates:
- Born 29 September 1943: transiting Uranus reaches natal Chiron at age 20.1 (October 1963), and transiting Chiron reaches natal Uranus at 41.7 (May 1985).
- Born 10 October 1997: transiting Chiron reaches natal Uranus at age 8.3 (February 2006), while transiting Uranus does not reach natal Chiron until age 62.1 (November 2059).
The single passes at London noon
29 September 1943. Uranus at 8°45' Gemini, retrograde, and Chiron at 8°41' Virgo, direct, 0.06° from exact. Pluto at 8°22' Leo sextiled Uranus (0.39°). Gemini and Virgo are both ruled by Mercury, so Mercury's sign and aspects add a lot to a reading of this square. Uranus in Gemini covers that generation.
10 October 1997. Uranus at 4°44' Aquarius, retrograde, and Chiron at 4°42' Scorpio, direct, 0.03° apart. Pluto at 3°43' Sagittarius sextiled Uranus (1.01°), and Jupiter at 12°06' Aquarius and Neptune at 27°10' Capricorn were both within orb of a conjunction with Uranus and a square to Chiron, about 7.4° to 7.6° wide. Aquarius has Uranus as its modern ruler and Saturn as its traditional ruler, so Uranus here is in a sign it rules in modern astrology. Scorpio has Pluto as its modern ruler and Mars as its traditional ruler; Chiron in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces covers that Chiron.
The R markers are close to independent on this angle. On the 793 square dates with Uranus retrograde, Chiron was retrograde on 31.4%; on the Uranus-direct dates, on 35.6%. Both carried an R on 11.8% of square dates, neither on 40.1%, Chiron alone on 22.2% and Uranus alone on 25.9%.
2050 to 2054: five passes across two sign pairs
Calculated ahead, the passes switch between mutable and cardinal signs as both bodies cross a sign boundary:
- 9 March 2051: Uranus 23°42' Virgo, retrograde, Chiron 23°42' Sagittarius. The Sun at 18°52' Pisces opposes Uranus and squares Chiron (4.84°), a T-square with Chiron at the apex.
- 7 June 2051: Uranus 21°26' Virgo, Chiron 21°27' Sagittarius, retrograde. Saturn at 20°33' Aquarius sextiles Chiron (0.91°), part of the long Saturn-Chiron sextile run described in Saturn sextile Chiron.
- 19 January 2052: Uranus 0°14' Libra, retrograde, Chiron 0°15' Capricorn, both at the start of cardinal signs.
- 28 August 2052: back in mutable signs, Uranus 29°09' Virgo, Chiron 29°08' Sagittarius, retrograde, with Saturn at 28°33' Aquarius sextile Chiron (0.60°).
- 3 December 2052: Uranus 4°31' Libra, Chiron 4°32' Capricorn, both direct.
Virgo is ruled by Mercury and Sagittarius by Jupiter; Libra by Venus and Capricorn by Saturn. People born in these years may have the square drawn between different sign pairs a few months apart.
Finding it on your chart
The free birth chart draws a square as a solid red line between ♅ and ⚷; a dashed red line is an opposition. The two longitudes in the planet table should be 82° to 98° apart. For births before 1920 or after 2060 the chart has no Chiron, so the line cannot appear.
When the birth time is unknown, Uranus and Chiron are taken from local noon, which the site uses as a working reference and not as a guess at the hour. Their separation shifted by at most 0.18° a day, so the hour could only decide the line on about 0.3% of square dates (an estimate from interpolating between noon charts). How to read Chiron in your chart suggests where a slow aspect like this fits in a reading.
