Uranus Opposite Chiron: Freedom and an Old Hurt Across the Chart
Updated October 17, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Uranus opposite Chiron means the two stood 172° to 188° apart at birth, on roughly opposite sides of the zodiac. Uranus is linked with change, independence, surprise and the refusal to fit a mould; Chiron with a tender place that keeps its sensitivity and can slowly turn into insight. An opposition is the angle of polarity, so astrologers usually read it as a pull between the two: the wish to be free on one side, an old hurt on the other, and other people or sudden events often acting as the go-between.
This is the Uranus-Chiron aspect of the second half of the twentieth century. It appears on a noon chart in every calendar year from 1951 to 1991, and in some stretches on nearly every date, so it describes very large groups of births. For any one person the line says more when the Sun, the Moon or a personal planet ties into it, or when a known birth time places Uranus or Chiron on an angle or in a house that matters to the question.
How it is often described
Freedom versus the sore place. A frequent reading is a swing between wanting to break away from everything and feeling the old sensitivity whenever change arrives.
Upheaval as the trigger. Some astrologers see the hurt as tied to sudden events: moves, breaks or changes that came without warning. The chart does not say whether anything like that happened.
Others carry one end. As with most oppositions, one side may be met in other people first: a partner who embodies freedom, or a friend whose difficulty mirrors one's own.
A bridge between them. The growth side is often described as letting change serve the healing rather than replace it: new methods, new communities or a new way of seeing an old pattern.
These are possibilities to consider, not facts about anyone.
Forty years in orb
Across 51,501 Greenwich noon charts, one per date from 1920 through 2060 (the span in which the calculator shows Chiron), Uranus was opposite Chiron on 9,107 dates: 17.68%, about one date in six. That is more than the other four Uranus-Chiron aspects put together, which have 5,584 dates between them. Every opposition date falls between 23 January 1951 and 22 April 1991, in 37 separate windows. In the 1950s 56.3% of all dates carried it, in the 1960s 66.5%, in the 1970s 66.1% and in the 1980s 54.8%. The longest single window ran from 25 June 1968 to 9 December 1971, 1,263 dates without a break.
The reason is Chiron's speed at the far end of its orbit. In the 1950s Chiron was still faster than Uranus, but in 1958 both covered about 4.9° a year, and by 1970 Chiron managed only 3.4° a year against Uranus's 4.7°. Around 1980 they were level again (4.3° and 4.4°). For three decades the gap between them hardly changed, staying between about 165° and 184° on every 1 January from 1952 to 1989, and the yearly retrograde loops swung it in and out of the 8° orb. Why Chiron changes signs unevenly explains the orbit.
Three clusters of exact passes
The 41 exact passes in the sample come in three groups, separated by years in which the line still appeared but never closed:
- 1952 to 1956, 11 passes: Uranus in Cancer and then Leo, Chiron in Capricorn and then Aquarius.
- 1964 to 1974, 21 passes: Uranus in Virgo and then Libra, Chiron in Pisces and then Aries. This is the densest stretch: 87.8% of the dates with Uranus in Libra from 1968 to 1975 carry the opposition.
- 1985 to 1989, 9 passes: Uranus in Sagittarius and then Capricorn, Chiron in Gemini and then Cancer.
From 1957 to 1963 the gap had grown to about 184°, slightly past exact, so each autumn the line came back only to within 0.30° to 1.75°. From 1975 to 1984 it had shrunk to about 165°, short of exact, and the summer windows came no closer than 0.33° in 1975 and 3.34° in 1980. Out-of-sign oppositions made up 11.7% of opposition dates.
Never retrograde together
On every one of the 9,107 dates, at most one of the two carried an R. Uranus showed retrograde only with the Sun at least 102.1° away in the sample, and Chiron only with the Sun at least 100.4° away. With Uranus and Chiron about 180° apart, the Sun's distances to them add up to about 180°, so it cannot be far enough from both at once. Chiron alone was retrograde on 43.0% of opposition dates, Uranus alone on 43.1%, and neither on 13.9%. Every one of the 41 exact passes had exactly one of them retrograde.
Worked examples at London noon
20 December 1954, a cardinal T-square. Uranus at 26°46' Cancer, retrograde, faced Chiron at 26°45' Capricorn (0.02°). Jupiter at 28°09' Cancer stood beside Uranus (1.38°), and Neptune at 27°46' Libra squared both ends (about 1.0°). Cancer is ruled by the Moon, Capricorn by Saturn and Libra by Venus. Chiron in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn covers that Chiron.
1 November 1965, with Pluto. Uranus at 18°20' Virgo and Pluto at 17°49' Virgo were conjunct (0.52°), both opposite Chiron at 18°19' Pisces, retrograde. Neptune at 19°19' Scorpio trined Chiron (1.01°) and sextiled Uranus (0.99°). A year later, on 23 October 1966, Saturn at 23°53' Pisces had joined Chiron (1.50°) opposite Uranus at 22°25' Virgo; Uranus conjunct Pluto and Saturn conjunct Chiron cover those years. Pisces has Neptune as its modern ruler and Jupiter as its traditional ruler; Virgo is ruled by Mercury.
29 September 1969, with the Sun and Mars. The Sun at 6°07' Libra was conjunct Uranus at 4°31' Libra, and Chiron at 4°31' Aries, retrograde, opposed both exactly. Mars at 5°08' Capricorn squared Uranus and Chiron (0.62°). Libra is ruled by Venus and Aries by Mars, so Mars was also the ruler of Chiron's sign here.
14 June 1988, with Saturn. Saturn at 29°41' and Uranus at 29°17' Sagittarius, both retrograde, were conjunct (0.40°), and Chiron at 29°20' Gemini opposed both (Uranus 0.06°, Saturn 0.34°). Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter and Gemini by Mercury; Saturn opposite Chiron follows the Saturn side.
Timing that follows from the birth chart
The free chart is a natal chart and the calculator does not compute transits, but one piece of timing can be read from the birth positions. With natal Chiron opposite natal Uranus, the Uranus opposition of midlife also brings transiting Uranus onto natal Chiron. For people born on the 41 exact pass dates, the first exact opposition came at ages 38.7 to 40.4 for the 1952 to 1956 passes, 41.5 to 42.2 for 1964 to 1974, and 43.0 to 44.5 for 1985 to 1989, the spread coming from Uranus's uneven pace through the signs. Their Chiron return, at ages 49.2 to 50.9 in the same sample, brings transiting Chiron back to its own place and so opposite natal Uranus again. With a wider natal orb the two events land further from these degrees.
Finding it on your chart
On the free birth chart an opposition is a dashed red line across the wheel between ♅ and ⚷; a solid red line is a square. In the planet table the longitudes should be 172° to 188° apart. Births before 1920 or after 2060 have no Chiron on the chart, so no line appears for them.
With no birth time, both are placed at local noon as an internal reference rather than an assumed time of birth. Their separation moved by at most 0.18° a day, so the hour could make a difference on only about 0.4% of opposition dates (estimated by interpolating between noon charts).
