Uranus Conjunct South Node: Familiar Breaks and Old Rebellions

← Back to Aspects

Here Uranus was within 8° of the South Node at birth. The North Node lies directly across from it, which makes this Uranus opposite the North Node as well, and the free chart shows a line to both points. Nodal astrology reads the South Node as home ground, the set of habits and skills a person falls back on without thinking. When Uranus occupies it, what feels most familiar may be change itself: going it alone early, being the outsider, or leaving quickly when things tighten, while the North Node on the far side of the wheel suggests where steadier, chosen commitments could take root.

The two bodies come together at the same Node roughly once every 15.2 years, so a South Node meeting follows a North Node meeting by about 7.6 years and vice versa. Checking one noon chart per day for 1900 to 2099 gave 3,483 South Node dates out of 73,049, or 4.8% (around one in 21), falling into 13 windows; 11 of those ran for 251 to 298 days. With up to ten months of births on one line, the contact speaks to an age group first. The individual picture depends on the house, which only a birth time can give, and on how Uranus connects to the personal planets.

Typical readings

Independence learned early. One recurring picture is someone who stood on their own feet sooner than most, or grew up amid upheaval, and got very good at adapting. That adaptability is a genuine asset, provided it still leaves space for putting down roots.

Rebellion as a habit. Uranus pushes against rules, and the South Node stores what runs on autopilot. The pairing is commonly linked to a reflexive "no" to expectations, valuable when those expectations are wrong and costly when every structure starts to look like a trap.

Detachment as safety. Some astrologers describe a tendency to keep one foot out of the door, staying cool and objective rather than fully involved. The North Node sign suggests the area where getting involved pays off.

Sudden exits as the default. When things get difficult, the first impulse may be to cut ties and begin elsewhere. At its best that is a clear sense of when something has run its course; at its least helpful it replaces the slower work of reshaping things from within.

Read these as leanings, not certainties. Node contacts usually count for less than planetary ones, and the house and aspects of Uranus will tell you more than its distance from the South Node. For an introduction to the axis, see North Node and South Node meaning.

Why most windows ran ten months

The Node passes Uranus only once in each window, as the Uranus conjunct North Node page explains, so the length of a window depends on how fast Uranus is moving at the time. Each of the 11 long South Node windows contained 111 to 154 days with Uranus retrograde. Over all South Node conjunction dates Uranus was retrograde 46.1% of the time, against 41.2% of all dates and 36.1% of North Node conjunction dates, and at four of the 13 exact meetings (1939, 1969, 1999 and 2075) Uranus was itself retrograde, against two of 14 at the North Node.

That difference belongs to these two centuries rather than to the contact, and it comes from the way the two ends alternate. Consecutive meetings, first at one Node and then at the other, were on average 2,783 days apart, almost exactly eight eclipse years (8 × 346.62 = 2,773 days, the eclipse year being the time the Sun takes to come back to the same Node). So at the next meeting the Sun has returned to roughly the same place relative to the Nodes, but Uranus now stands at the opposite Node: a Sun that was beside Uranus at one meeting is opposite it at the next. The Sun's place decides whether Uranus is fast, stationary or retrograde, so a quick window at one Node is flanked by slow ones at the other. Each of the six windows of 155 to 170 days in the sample, four at the North Node and two at the South Node, had a window of 287 to 298 days at the other Node immediately before and after it. Because the spacing is not exactly eight eclipse years, which Node collects the quick windows shifts slowly over the centuries.

The two short South Node windows were 3 November 1907 to 15 April 1908 (165 days, Uranus in Capricorn, no retrograde day) and 13 February to 1 August 2030 (170 days, Uranus in Gemini, 8 retrograde days at the start). In both the Sun was within 19° of the Node at the exact meeting. The 2030 meeting falls on 19 May 2030, at 17°25' against 17°28' Gemini, and the window contains an annular solar eclipse at 06:28 Universal Time on 1 June 2030 and a partial lunar eclipse on 15 June. Gemini is ruled by Mercury and Sagittarius by Jupiter.

Six weeks within a degree

When the meeting comes while Uranus is retrograde, both bodies move backward at almost the same speed and the gap barely changes. At the four retrograde meetings Uranus stayed within 1° of the South Node for 42 to 47 days, against 18 to 37 days at the other meetings.

The 1999 window is one of them. It ran from 20 February to 14 December 1999, with Uranus in Aquarius on an Aquarius South Node and the North Node in Leo. Uranus turned retrograde on 22 May and met the Node two days later, on 24 May, at 16°47' against 16°48' Aquarius, and it was within 1° from 7 May to 17 June. NASA lists a partial lunar eclipse on 28 July and the total solar eclipse of 11 August 1999 at 11:03 Universal Time. At London noon that day the calculator has the Sun at 18°21' Leo and the Moon at 18°16' Leo, opposite a retrograde Uranus at 14°40' Aquarius, which was 2.05° from the South Node at 12°37'. Saturn stood at 16°52' Taurus and Mars at 16°50' Scorpio, so each of the four fixed signs held a planet between 14° and 19°. Uranus is the modern ruler of Aquarius, with Saturn as its traditional ruler, so this Uranus stands in a sign it rules in modern astrology, opposite a Leo North Node ruled by the Sun; more in North Node in Leo or Aquarius.

Taurus and Scorpio: 1938 to 1939 and 2060

The 1938 to 1939 window ran from 1 July 1938 to 23 April 1939, with Uranus in Taurus on a Taurus South Node and the North Node in Scorpio. The exact meeting came on 20 January 1939 at 13°50' against 13°51', three days before Uranus turned direct, and Uranus stayed within 1° of the Node from 27 December 1938 to 6 February 1939. Inside the window NASA lists a total lunar eclipse on 7 November 1938 at 22:26 Universal Time, a partial solar eclipse on 21 November 1938 and an annular solar eclipse on 19 April 1939.

The mirror case comes on 16 July 2060, when the calculator puts Uranus at 4°09' Scorpio on a Scorpio South Node at 4°07', inside a window from 22 December 2059 to 12 October 2060. Taurus is ruled by Venus. Scorpio has Pluto as its modern ruler and Mars as its traditional ruler. The Taurus-Scorpio axis covers both directions.

The opposition reaches the North Node

Transits are outside what the free chart calculates, yet this one can be anticipated from the birth chart. Around the early forties transiting Uranus opposes its own natal position, the Uranus opposition. When natal Uranus sits by the South Node, the point opposite it is near the natal North Node, so the transit carries Uranus over to the North Node side, reaching the Node's own degree only for people born very close to an exact meeting. For those born on the exact meeting dates from 1908 to 2045, the first exact opposition arrived between about 38.7 and 44.5 years of age. With a looser natal orb it passes degrees near the North Node rather than the Node itself. In nodal terms, the planet tied to the familiar end then crosses the growth end, which some astrologers read as a midlife chance to put old independence to new use.

Spotting it on the wheel

On the wheel, ♅ sits close to S.Node with a short amber line between them, and a red dashed line reaches across to N.Node. In the positions table the gap from Uranus to the North Node should be 172° to 188°. The South Node and Uranus were in different signs on 5.5% of sampled dates despite being in orb, so go by the degrees. An R next to Uranus marks it as retrograde, which was the case on 46.1% of the sampled dates for this contact.

With no birth time, the chart uses local noon for Uranus and the Nodes as a reference point only. The windows are long, so only 0.7% of conjunction dates were a window's first or last day, where the hour might matter. Houses cannot be shown without the time.
