Domicile and Detriment in Astrology: Planets in Their Own or Opposite Sign
Updated October 30, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
A planet is in domicile when it sits in a sign it rules, and in detriment when it sits in the sign directly opposite one it rules. Both terms are derived from the table of sign rulers and nothing else. Once you know which system of rulers you are using, every domicile and every detriment follows mechanically.
This page covers the pair in depth. For the overview of all four classic dignities, see planetary dignities explained. The other pair, which comes from a separate scheme, is on exaltation and fall.
As with all dignities, this is an interpretive concept Astrologist.com explains. The free chart does not label any planet as being in domicile or detriment.
Why the opposite sign
Each sign has a partner across the zodiac: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. Opposite signs share a modality and sit in complementary elements, and their styles are usually described as two ends of one axis.
When a planet is in the sign opposite its home, it is working through the style at the far end of its own axis. Venus rules Libra, a sign of balance and accommodation; across the zodiac, Aries is direct and self-starting. So Venus in Aries is in detriment: Venus's function of valuing and relating (what) is expressed in a direct, initiating style (how) that its home sign Libra does not use. That is a difference of style, not a fault.
Two systems, kept apart
Astrologist.com is modern-first and keeps the traditional rulers. The two give different domicile and detriment lists, so each is shown on its own. Read a chart in one system at a time, and do not mix columns.
Modern-first (the site's primary rulers)
| Planet | In domicile in | In detriment in |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | Aquarius |
| Moon | Cancer | Capricorn |
| Mercury | Gemini and Virgo | Sagittarius and Pisces |
| Venus | Taurus and Libra | Scorpio and Aries |
| Mars | Aries | Libra |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius | Gemini |
| Saturn | Capricorn | Cancer |
| Uranus | Aquarius | Leo |
| Neptune | Pisces | Virgo |
| Pluto | Scorpio | Taurus |
The last three rows are a modern extension. Once Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were given Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio, astrologers applied the same opposite-sign logic to them. Those detriments were never part of the classical scheme, and some astrologers do not use them.
Traditional (seven planets)
| Planet | In domicile in | In detriment in |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | Aquarius |
| Moon | Cancer | Capricorn |
| Mercury | Gemini and Virgo | Sagittarius and Pisces |
| Venus | Taurus and Libra | Scorpio and Aries |
| Mars | Aries and Scorpio | Libra and Taurus |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius and Pisces | Gemini and Virgo |
| Saturn | Capricorn and Aquarius | Cancer and Leo |
In this system Uranus, Neptune and Pluto rule no sign, so they have no domicile and no detriment.
Where the two disagree
- Only traditional: Mars in Scorpio, Jupiter in Pisces and Saturn in Aquarius are in domicile; Mars in Taurus, Jupiter in Virgo and Saturn in Leo are in detriment.
- Only modern-first: Uranus in Aquarius, Neptune in Pisces and Pluto in Scorpio are in domicile; Uranus in Leo, Neptune in Virgo and Pluto in Taurus are in detriment.
- Both: every other entry, from the Sun in Leo to Saturn in Cancer.
So "Mars in Taurus is in detriment" is a traditional statement, and "Pluto in Taurus is in detriment" is a modern one. Saying which system you mean avoids most of the confusion around this topic. The history of the two sets of rulers is on modern and traditional rulers.
Planet by planet
Each note below describes how the planet's function is usually read in its home sign and in the opposite sign. These are patterns astrologers describe, not outcomes.
Sun. In Leo, identity and vitality are expressed through warmth and personal presence. In Aquarius, the same function takes a detached, group-minded style, so self-expression tends to run through ideas and shared causes rather than personal display.
Moon. In Cancer, emotional needs are met through closeness and care, as described on Moon in Cancer. In Capricorn, emotional security is sought through structure, responsibility and self-reliance; see Moon in Capricorn.
Mercury. Gemini and Virgo give Mercury two homes: quick and curious in one, exact and practical in the other. In Sagittarius and Pisces, thinking leans toward the broad picture or the intuitive impression rather than the detail.
Venus. In Taurus and Libra, Venus works through steadiness and through harmony; Venus in Libra is the classic example. In Scorpio and Aries, affection and taste take an intense or a direct style; see Venus in Scorpio.
Mars. Mars in Aries acts quickly and directly. Mars in Libra pursues goals through negotiation and weighing others' positions. Traditionally Mars also rules Scorpio and is in detriment in Taurus, where action tends to be steady and slow to start.
Jupiter. In Sagittarius, growth comes through exploration and belief. In Gemini, the same urge to expand works through variety, information and many small connections. Traditionally Jupiter also rules Pisces and is in detriment in Virgo.
Saturn. In Capricorn, structure and responsibility take a practical, long-range form. In Cancer, they are built around family, belonging and emotional duty. Traditionally Saturn also rules Aquarius and is in detriment in Leo.
Uranus. In the modern system Uranus is at home in Aquarius (see Uranus in Aquarius) and in detriment in Leo, where the drive for independence meets a personal, self-expressive style. Because Uranus stays in a sign for about seven years, these placements are shared by whole age groups.
Neptune. At home in Pisces in the modern system (see Neptune in Pisces), in detriment in Virgo, where imagination and idealism are filtered through analysis and practical service. Neptune spends around fourteen years in a sign, so this is generational too.
Pluto. At home in Scorpio in the modern system (see Pluto in Scorpio), in detriment in Taurus, where the theme of deep change meets a sign oriented to stability and holding on. For slow planets, the house and aspects carry most of the personal meaning.
Domicile, detriment and dispositors
A planet in domicile is its own dispositor: it rules the sign it is in, so a dispositor chain that reaches it stops there. That makes it self-dispositing, but not automatically the chart's final dispositor. Whether every chain ends at it depends on the rest of the chart, as explained in what is a final dispositor.
Detriment adds nothing special to the chain. A planet in detriment is disposited by whichever planet rules that sign, exactly like any other placement. Venus in Aries goes to Mars; Mars in Libra goes to Venus.
Readings to avoid
- "Detriment means a bad planet." It does not. The term describes the sign the planet is in, and says nothing by itself about whether that part of life is difficult or well integrated.
- "Domicile guarantees ease." A planet in its own sign still has a house and aspects, and those can describe pressure as well as support.
- "Retrograde makes detriment worse." Retrograde motion does not create, cancel or change domicile or detriment. Both depend only on the sign.
- "One list fits all astrologers." Two systems are in use. Name the one you are using.
No planet in your chart is scored here. Dignity is one descriptive layer among several; how to read a birth chart shows how the layers combine, and planets meaning covers what each planet represents.
An example from one chart
In Ruben's example chart (London, 5 January 1993, 12:00), Saturn is in Aquarius and Pluto in Scorpio. Under modern rulers Pluto is in domicile and Saturn is not, because Uranus rules Aquarius in that system. Under traditional rulers it is the other way round: Saturn is at home in Aquarius, and Pluto, ruling nothing, has no domicile at all. None of his ten planets is in detriment in either system.

Create your free birth chart, read the sign of each planet in the table under the wheel, and check it against the two tables above. The chart shows signs but does not mark domicile or detriment. The site's rulership choices are summarised on the methodology page, and you can ask the Astrologist to talk through a placement, though it does not produce a dignity table.
