Birth Charts
A birth chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It records where the Sun, Moon, and every planet was positioned in the zodiac, which house each occupied in the twelve-area division of the chart, and what geometric relationships — called aspects — formed between them. The result is a document unique to you and your moment of arrival in the world.
Reading a birth chart means understanding three layers simultaneously: what energy is present (the planets), how it expresses (the signs), and where it operates (the houses). A birth chart interpretation moves through all three constantly, combining them into a coherent picture rather than reading each in isolation.
Why birth time matters
The Sun sign changes roughly every 30 days, so a birth date alone is enough to determine it. The Moon sign changes approximately every two and a half days — a birth date is usually sufficient, but can be ambiguous on days the Moon changes signs. The Rising sign — the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth — changes approximately every two hours. Getting it right requires knowing the exact birth time.
The Rising sign matters not just for its own meaning but because it sets the position of all 12 houses in the chart. An error of even an hour can shift house placements significantly, moving planets from one house to an adjacent one and changing substantial parts of the interpretation.
If you do not know your birth time, you can still work accurately with your Sun, Moon, and planet signs while acknowledging that house placements are approximate. A birth certificate is the most reliable source, but hospital records, family records, or a local vital statistics office can often provide the time if the certificate does not.
