What Is the Descendant in Astrology?

The Descendant, marked DC on a chart, is the degree of the zodiac that was setting on the western horizon at the moment you were born. It is always exactly opposite the Ascendant, at the same degree in the opposite sign. If your Ascendant is 8° Gemini, your Descendant is 8° Sagittarius. Astrologers often read it for how you meet other people, especially in close one-to-one relationships.

It is one of the four chart angles, together with the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the IC.

Why the Descendant is easy to find

The Ascendant and Descendant are the two places where the ecliptic meets the horizon, one in the east and one in the west. Since both lie on the same circle, they are always 180° apart. So once you know your Rising sign, you know your Descendant sign: Aries rising gives a Libra Descendant, Leo rising an Aquarius Descendant, Pisces rising a Virgo Descendant. The degree is the same at both ends.

This holds in every house system Astrologist.com uses. In Placidus charts and in the Equal houses used for births more than 66° north or south, the 7th house cusp is the Descendant. The MC/IC labeling limitation in high-latitude Equal charts does not rewrite the DC label; the Descendant still comes from the Ascendant. At polar latitudes, though, the Ascendant itself can need verification in some cases, which then affects the Descendant too. Chart angles at high latitudes covers both the Equal-cusp labels and that separate polar caution.

What it still needs is the Ascendant itself, which means a reliable birth time and place. Without a known time, the free chart shows neither point.

Descendant, 7th house and 7th ruler

Three related ideas are worth keeping apart:

  • The Descendant is the point at the start of the 7th house. Its sign describes a style of meeting others.
  • The 7th house is the area that follows it, read for partnerships, close collaborators and the people you deal with one to one.
  • The ruler of the 7th house is the planet ruling the Descendant sign. Where it sits in your chart is a separate layer, with a lookup table, in the ruler of the 7th house.

The Descendant sign can be read even when the 7th house holds no planets.

What astrologers read in the Descendant

The Ascendant is often described as how you step forward; the Descendant as what you meet when you turn toward someone else. Common readings include:

  • the qualities you tend to notice, admire or look for in partners and close friends;
  • the qualities you may find easier to see in others than to claim for yourself, a pattern psychological astrology sometimes calls projection;
  • the kind of relationship style that feels balancing, given your Ascendant.

The sign on the Descendant gives these themes their tone. Someone with Capricorn rising and a Cancer Descendant may be drawn to warmth and emotional openness in others while leading with reserve themselves. Someone with Libra rising and an Aries Descendant may value directness in a partner that they are slower to show. These are possibilities to test against experience, not predictions about any partner.

The Descendant is not a compatibility score

Because the Descendant is linked with partners, it is sometimes treated as a verdict on relationships. It is not. It describes patterns in one chart, your own, and says nothing definite about any particular person.

It is also separate from the Astrologist.com compatibility tool. That tool gives a sign-level estimate based on the Sun, Moon and Rising signs of both people, and it is not a full synastry comparison of two charts. For how sign-level compatibility differs from chart work, see the compatibility overview. Comparing two charts planet by planet is called synastry, and synastry basics explains what it involves.

Birth time and the Descendant

The Descendant moves exactly as fast as the Ascendant, because it is always opposite it. That speed changes through the day and with latitude, so there is no fixed number of minutes per degree. In Amsterdam on 15 April 2001, the calculator gives a Descendant of 29°50' Capricorn at 12:20 and 0°44' Aquarius at 12:25.

Five minutes changed more than the sign. With Capricorn on the Descendant the 7th ruler is Saturn; with Aquarius it is Uranus as modern ruler, with Saturn as the traditional ruler. A time near a sign boundary is worth testing at both ends of its plausible range, as described in how accurate your birth time needs to be.

Finding your Descendant on the free chart

  1. Generate your chart with the free birth chart and an exact birth time.
  2. The Rising sign is shown above the wheel. Your Descendant is in the opposite sign at the same degree.
  3. On the wheel, the Ascendant is always on the left, marked with a gold ASC arrow. The DC label sits directly opposite, on the right, where the 7th house cusp line meets the zodiac ring.
  4. The wheel does not print the Descendant's degree, and it draws no aspect lines to it. A planet close to the DC appears near the label without a line.

Once you have the sign, the next steps are the 7th house ruler and any planets in the 7th house. If you would like help with how it fits your chart, you can ask the Astrologist.
