Jupiter Transits to Natal Ascendant: The Axis Versus the First House

Updated October 23, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

A Jupiter transit to the natal Ascendant is a period in which moving Jupiter reaches one of eight longitudes measured from the Ascendant, the degree that was rising in the east at the time and place of birth. Many astrologers use these contacts as an optional prompt to reflect on outlook, openness and how freely you express yourself. That is interpretation. The dates themselves are arithmetic and can be checked by anyone with the same inputs.

This page is about a confusion that the Ascendant invites. Jupiter crossing the Ascendant, Jupiter in the first house, Jupiter opposite the Ascendant and Jupiter on the Descendant are often run together. Some are the same thing under two names; others are different measurements with very different lengths. One worked example sorts them out.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com has no transit calculator, transit calendar or timing report. The free birth chart names your Rising sign and turns its wheel so the Ascendant sits on the left, but it does not print the Ascendant degree, and its aspect lines connect bodies, not angles, so an exact degree cannot be copied from the ASC arrow. The figures below were computed offline for an invented birth. For your own dates you need a source that gives your Tropical Ascendant degree explicitly, computed for the same birth data.

Points, an axis and a house

  • The Ascendant and the Descendant are one axis. The Descendant is the point exactly opposite the Ascendant. So Jupiter opposite the natal Ascendant and Jupiter conjunct the natal Descendant are the same crossing of the same degree. Counting them separately would double-count a single event.
  • The first cusp is the Ascendant, the first house is a stretch. In the site's Placidus charts, and in its Equal houses above 66° latitude, the first house cusp is the Ascendant degree. The first house runs from there to the second cusp. Jupiter's conjunction with the Ascendant is a crossing of that cusp, but the date alone does not say which way it went: moving forward Jupiter enters the first house, moving backward it drops back into the twelfth, as the example below shows. So a first-house stay can end at either cusp. A date marks an entry or an exit only when Jupiter actually crosses the degree in a known direction; a turn exactly on the degree would touch it without crossing.
  • The Rising sign is a third thing. It is the sign the Ascendant falls in. A first house can extend well into the following sign, or two signs, so Jupiter can be in the first house without being in the Rising sign.
  • Other aspect targets need checking against the cusps. In the systems above the Ascendant and Descendant always mark the first and seventh cusps. Whether any other target also sits on a cusp depends on the house system and the chart. In Equal houses from the Ascendant every cusp is the Ascendant plus a multiple of 30°, so all eight targets land on cusps by construction, and in Placidus a target can coincide with a cusp too. In this Liège chart the squares, trines and sextiles all fall inside houses.

Polar births. Equal houses from the Ascendant, the chart's rule above 66° latitude, inherit whatever Ascendant they are given and cannot repair a wrong one. Inside the polar regions the current Ascendant routine has an unresolved reliability limitation and can, in some cases, return the western horizon intersection; see chart angles at high latitudes. The Equal-house point about cusps above is geometry only and says nothing in favour of the Ascendant the routine returns there. This example, at about 51° N, makes no claim beyond moderate latitudes.

Worked example: Liège, 25 September 1990, 15:00

Invented birth; values from the chart's own code at commit fc9ebda6.

  • Birth record: Liège, Belgium (50.6326° N, 5.5797° E), 15:00 on 25 September 1990. Belgium was on summer time until 30 September that year, two hours ahead of UT, so the birth was at 13:00 UT; zoneinfo gives UT+2 for every minute of the date.
  • Ascendant: 23°36' Sagittarius, 263.59829° at full precision, rounded to 263.60° in the chart's calculation output (the wheel itself prints no Ascendant number). The Descendant is therefore 23°36' Gemini.
  • House cusps that matter here: second cusp 5°58' Aquarius (305.968°), eighth cusp 5°58' Leo. The first house spans more than 42°, all of Capricorn included.
  • Natal Jupiter: 7°24' Leo, for context. It plays no part in the targets.
  • Window: 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2037, a twelve-year span chosen to cover about one Jupiter circuit inside the 1920 to 2060 checking range. It has nothing to do with age or lifespan.
  • Method: Jupiter every six hours from the chart's VSOP87B routine, crossings narrowed to under thirty seconds and stations to about a minute, as bookkeeping. Two years either side of the window were also scanned so that groups cut by the window could be labelled. The dated tables use the full-precision Ascendant and cusps; degree-and-minute labels such as 23°36' are shorthand. Dates are UT.

Contacts in the window

Contact Target Passes Exact dates (UT)
Waning trine (+240°) 23°36' Leo 3 26 Oct 2026, 30 Jan 2027, 22 Jun 2027
Waning square (+270°) 23°36' Virgo 3 21 Nov 2027, 4 Mar 2028, 20 Jul 2028
Waning sextile (+300°) 23°36' Libra 3 21 Dec 2028, 3 Apr 2029, 20 Aug 2029
Conjunction (+0°) 23°36' Sagittarius 3 12 Feb 2031, 19 Jun 2031, 10 Oct 2031
Waxing sextile (+60°) 23°36' Aquarius 1 14 Mar 2033
Waxing square (+90°) 23°36' Pisces 1 24 Mar 2034
Waxing trine (+120°) 23°36' Aries 1 3 Apr 2035
Opposition (+180°), the same crossing as Jupiter conjunct the Descendant 23°36' Gemini 3 2 Sep 2036, 23 Nov 2036, 22 Apr 2037

No group is clipped. Single passes are simply targets that no Jupiter retrograde loop happened to cover in this circuit; the count is a property of these dates, not a rule for each aspect.

Three crossings and a first-house stay

The conjunction's three dates are Jupiter crossing 23°36' Sagittarius forward, backward and forward again. Because that degree is the first cusp, the same three dates are when Jupiter enters the first house (12 February 2031), drops back into the twelfth (19 June 2031) and enters again (10 October 2031). Jupiter then stays in the first house for the rest of 2031 and almost all of 2032, crosses the second cusp at 5°58' Aquarius on 28 December 2032 and does not come back over it.

So the contact is three moments, while the first-house stay comes in two stretches: 12 February to 19 June 2031 (about 126 days) and 10 October 2031 to 28 December 2032 (about 445 days). That is about 572 days, roughly nineteen months, actually inside the house, within an overall span of about 685 days from first entry to final exit. More than half of the time inside has Jupiter in Capricorn and some in early Aquarius. None of that time in Capricorn or Aquarius involves the Rising sign, Sagittarius, and none of it is a contact to the Ascendant degree.

The opposite end of the axis shows the same pattern. Jupiter was already in this chart's seventh house when the window opened, having crossed the Descendant on 11 May 2025, before the window, and it left on 27 July 2026; that stay is clipped by the window's start. The opposition passes in 2036 and 2037 are its next crossings of the Descendant, into the seventh house, back out and in again. On 31 December 2037 Jupiter is still in the seventh house; it crosses the eighth cusp on 11 July 2038, after the window. Each of those three dates is one event: opposition to the Ascendant and conjunction to the Descendant are not two signals that agree, they are one crossing described twice.

The squares make the other point. The waxing square target, 23°36' Pisces, lies just past this chart's third cusp at 22°57' Pisces, and the waning square target, 23°36' Virgo, just past the ninth cusp at 22°57' Virgo. Neither is a cusp, and Jupiter's squares to the Ascendant here begin no house stay.

A ten-minute check on the birth time

The record says 15:00. As a check, the scan was repeated for every minute from 14:55 to 15:05. Over those ten minutes the Ascendant ran from 22°31' to 24°40' Sagittarius (262.53210° to 264.67607°), about 0.214° a minute at this place and time. Over the whole of that Liège day its pace varied between about 0.177° and 0.58° a minute, so the figure applies to this birth only.

  • No count changed. None of Jupiter's turning points in the window fell inside any target's possible range, and no crossing came near either end of the window, so every contact keeps the count in the table at every minute.
  • Every date moved. The first conjunction pass ran from 6 to 19 February 2031 across the ten minutes, the second from 27 June back to 10 June, and the opposition passes by up to nearly three weeks (25 August to 12 September 2036 for the first). Backward passes move the other way from forward ones.
  • The second cusp moved too, from 4°22' to 7°35' Aquarius, so the end of the first-house stay runs from 21 December 2032 to 5 January 2033.
  • Rounding is a much smaller effect here. Rerunning the scan with 263.60°, which is both the rounded output and what 23°36' Sagittarius gives, changed no count and moved each Ascendant and Descendant crossing by at most 0.35 hours; only the first opposition pass changes UT day, from 2 to 3 September 2036. Using 5°58' Aquarius for the second cusp moves the end of the stay by under a quarter of an hour.

A wider uncertainty could add or remove passes; the Saturn Ascendant page shows a case where it does. If the birth time is unknown, there is no Ascendant to work from at all, and noon is not a substitute.

Outlook and openness: optional reflection

Start from the Rising sign and anything close to the Ascendant; see Ascendant degree vs Rising sign. Use these prompts or leave them.

  • Conjunction. Where would you like more room to try things, and which first step would be small enough to take?
  • Opposition. What do you notice about your own outlook when you set it beside the people closest to you?
  • Squares, trines and sextiles. Often read as times to widen a routine, take up a course or say yes to something new, if and when it suits you.

None of these contacts guarantees luck, success, money, a relationship or any other event. They predict nothing about weight, appearance, health or how long anyone lives. Jupiter does not cause events, and an easy contact is no promise that things will go well.

Doing it with your own chart

  1. Get your Ascendant degree, and if you want house stays your second and eighth cusps, from a source that prints them for the same birth data. Without a reliable birth time there is nothing to calculate.
  2. Set an honest interval for the birth time and compute the Ascendant at both ends, checking that it increased steadily in between. Ranges that pass 360° continue through 0° Aries.
  3. Add the eight offsets. From a Tropical ephemeris, note every Jupiter crossing of each target and every Jupiter station inside any target range; a station there means the count can differ across your interval, and a crossing close to either end of a fixed window can move in or out of it.
  4. For house stays, list Jupiter's crossings of the first and second cusps separately from the Ascendant contacts, and remember that the cusps move with birth time as well.

The repository checks Jupiter against the Swiss Ephemeris at 12:00 UT on each of 51,516 days from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061. In the run for this batch the largest difference was 3.78 arc-seconds (4 July 2049) and the root mean square 0.26, and all 258 stations paired, the worst 0.013 hours apart. The test limits (8 and 2 arc-seconds, 0.03 hours) are allowances, not measured errors, a station check does not bound crossing times, and none of it tests the Ascendant. For this example the chart's Ascendant was compared minute by minute with an independent Swiss Ephemeris house calculation: they agreed within 0.09 arc-seconds from 14:55 to 15:05, the second cusp within 0.1, and both placed the Ascendant on the eastern horizon. At every crossing in the table Swiss Jupiter was within 0.5 arc-seconds of the target, whether the target was built from the site's full-precision Ascendant or from the independent Swiss one, a few hundredths of an hour.
