Jupiter Transits to Natal Mercury: A Fast Mercury and Its Dates
Updated October 22, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
When moving Jupiter forms a conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition to the place natal Mercury occupied at birth, astrologers speak of a Jupiter transit to natal Mercury. Natal Mercury does not move in this calculation, however fast or slow it was going when you were born. Jupiter does, at roughly a sign a year with a four-month backward loop each year, so a target may be crossed once, three times, or met at a stationary touch in the limiting case where Jupiter halts exactly on it. The Sun page lays out the geometry in full.
Mercury is commonly linked with how you think, learn, read, write and explain. Jupiter contacts tend to be read as an invitation to explore ideas, widen what you study or teach, and check whether the size of a claim, your own or someone else's, matches the evidence behind it. These are reflection prompts, not forecasts, and they carry no verdict on anyone's mind.
Educational guide: you will find no transit tool here, whether a calculator, a calendar, a return chart or a timing report, and the free birth chart stops once the natal chart is drawn. Every date below was produced offline, once, for this example. To find your own, set your natal Mercury beside a Tropical ephemeris.
Targets around natal Mercury
First express Mercury as a longitude measured from the start of Aries. In the example below Mercury is displayed as 4°04' Cancer: 90° + 4° + 4/60 gives about 94.07° (94.0667°). The full-precision model value, 94.0729°, is kept separately and used for every date on this page. Jupiter's targets are that number plus 0° or 180°, plus 60° or 300°, plus 90° or 270°, and plus 120° or 240°, minus 360 where the sum passes it. Each pair names two places in the zodiac, reached years apart, and any repeat dates a loop puts on one place still make one contact.
Points lying 0° to 180° ahead of natal Mercury, counting through the signs, are called waxing here, and points 180° to 360° ahead are called waning. Both words describe position, measured from natal Mercury; applying and separating aspects are not distinguished by the site's calculator.
Jupiter's circuit is about 11.9 years, which describes the planet, not your calendar; contacts come at uneven gaps and no fixed ages. Nor is a Jupiter conjunction to Mercury a Jupiter return: for the person below, the returns to natal Jupiter came on 13 May 2012 and 26 April 2024, and the Mercury conjunction on 14 July 2013.
Worked example: Mercury moving near full speed
An invented birth, real arithmetic: every number below was produced by running the free chart's code offline.
- Birth: 6 July 1976, 15:50, Norwich. British Summer Time (UT+1) was in force, so 14:50 UT; Python's zoneinfo confirms that offset from midnight to 23:59.
- Natal Mercury: 4°04' Cancer as displayed, 94.0729° at full precision, direct and moving about 2.05° a day, close to the fastest Mercury gets. Its nearest stations were weeks away (direct on 2 June, retrograde again on 8 September 1976).
- Ephemeris: the free chart's own planetary routine (VSOP87B via astronomia) at commit
cadebebe, unchanged, for Mercury and Jupiter alike; longitudes are apparent, seen from Earth, Tropical, measured on the ecliptic of date. - Search: 1 January 2013 to 1 September 2025, ages 36.5 to 49.2, conjunction to conjunction. Jupiter was sampled four times a day; every crossing was bisected until the remaining interval was shorter than 30 seconds (a numerical step, not a statement of observational accuracy), and Jupiter's stations were located within about a minute for comparison with each target. Results are given as UT calendar days.
| Contact | Target | Exact hits (UT) | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conjunction (+0°) | 4°04' Cancer | 14 Jul 2013 | 37.02 |
| Waxing sextile (+60°) | 4°04' Virgo | 30 Aug 2015 | 39.15 |
| Waxing square (+90°) | 4°04' Libra | 28 Sep 2016 | 40.23 |
| Waxing trine (+120°) | 4°04' Scorpio | 29 Oct 2017 | 41.31 |
| Opposition (+180°) | 4°04' Capricorn | 20 Dec 2019 | 43.46 |
| Waning trine (+240°) | 4°04' Pisces | 18 Jan 2022 | 45.54 |
| Waning square (+270°) | 4°04' Aries | 3 Jun 2022, 23 Sep 2022, 20 Jan 2023 | 45.91 to 46.54 |
| Waning sextile (+300°) | 4°04' Taurus | 4 Jun 2023 | 46.91 |
| Conjunction (+0°) | 4°04' Cancer | 27 Jun 2025 | 48.98 |
Seven of the eight contacts were single passes in this circuit; only the waning square had three. A different chart, or the same chart in another circuit, can split very differently, so treat this as one result rather than a pattern.
Bands that come back without an exact date
To have something to compare, apply the natal chart's orb sizes, edges included: 8° around the conjunction, squares, trines and opposition and 6° around the sextiles. Transits themselves get no orb on this site, and a band's dates are not the length or strength of an experience.
- Conjunction 2013: within 8° from 8 June to 21 August 2013, then again from 2 February to 7 April 2014. The second stretch has no exact date: Jupiter turned direct on 6 March 2014 at 10°26' Cancer, 6.37° past the point, and moved on.
- Waning trine: in the band from 16 April to 28 August 2021 with no exact date, because Jupiter turned retrograde on 20 June 2021 at 2°10' Pisces, 1.89° short of the target; it returned to the band on 5 December 2021, crossed the point on 18 January 2022 and left on 21 February 2022.
- Waning square: one band stretch, 22 April 2022 to 1 March 2023, containing all three exact dates. Jupiter turned retrograde on 28 July 2022 at 8°43' Aries and direct on 23 November 2022 at 28°48' Pisces, well clear of the point both times.
So one exact date can sit inside two stretches, a stretch can have none, and three dates can share one. These are different facts and none of them measures what a person goes through.
A fast Mercury across the whole birth date
With the time left blank, the chart would place Mercury at about 3°45' Cancer, the local-noon value; noon serves there as a calculating reference, not a stated birth time, and no range is shown.
Over the local date, which in UT ran from 23:00 on 5 July until 22:59 on 6 July, Mercury ran from 2°43' to 4°46' Cancer, a span of 2.04°. A minute-by-minute scan found no Mercury station that day, so the lowest and highest values sit at the two ends of the date. A fast natal Mercury gives a wide range of possible target degrees, and with Jupiter moving only a fraction of a degree a day near most of these points, that range turns into days:
- Every single-pass contact moved by about nine or ten days across the date; the 2013 conjunction, for example, could fall anywhere from 8 to 17 July 2013 and the opposition from 14 to 23 December 2019.
- The waning-square passes moved more: 25 May to 7 June 2022, 18 September to 4 October 2022, and 12 to 24 January 2023.
- Recomputed for Mercury at ten-minute steps and at the first and last minute, no contact changed its pass count in this circuit. No Jupiter station fell inside any of the possible target ranges.
That stability is a result, not a promise. In the previous circuit, which lies outside the window above, Jupiter turned retrograde on 23 July 2010 at 3°24' Aries, inside the possible range for the waning square. Births from midnight to about 07:57 local would have had three passes at that point in 2010 and 2011, and births from about 07:58 one pass, on dates from 9 to 15 February 2011. That cut-off is approximate, taken from the unrounded model sampled minute by minute; anyone born close to it would need a finer computation and a look at which ephemeris conventions are in use.
Time uncertainty is easier to handle as an explicit interval. If the recorded 15:50 could be half an hour early or late (15:20 to 16:20 local), Mercury spans 4°01' to 4°07' Cancer, no count changes, and dates move by one day at most. Houses and the Ascendant cannot be taken from a guessed time, so leave them out.
Comparing the natal Sun's conjunction
In this chart the natal Sun was at 14°38' Cancer (104.6406°), 10.57° ahead of Mercury. Mercury stays within roughly 28° of the Sun (background on the page about Sun, Mercury and Venus aspect limits), but a gap in degrees does not fix a gap in time. Worked out independently for the conjunction offset:
- Jupiter crossed the Mercury target a single time, on 14 July 2013.
- The Sun target was crossed three times: 4 September 2013, 11 January 2014 and 28 April 2014, with a retrograde station on 7 November 2013 at 20°30' Cancer between the first two.
- The first Sun pass followed the Mercury pass by about 53 days; the last came about 289 days after it.
Over the birth date as a whole, the Sun moved from 14°00' to 14°57' Cancer, so its passes could fall from 1 to 6 September 2013, 9 to 16 January 2014 and 24 to 30 April 2014. At every sampled time Mercury's target had one pass and the Sun's three, the earliest Sun pass coming 52 to 55 days after Mercury's and the latest 288 to 290 days after it. A 10.57° separation still produced a nine-month spread here because of where Jupiter turned. That is a single chart at a single offset, not a usual interval and not a combined effect.
What a Jupiter contact to Mercury may prompt
Weigh these against the sign and aspects of natal Mercury, and its house if the birth time can be trusted. They are prompts, not results:
- Conjunction. Following a new line of curiosity; asking which subject you want to learn or teach more widely.
- Squares. A plan, reading list or argument that has grown past the evidence or the time available. Often taken as a nudge to scale claims and commitments back to what can be supported.
- Opposition. Your ideas set against another person's view of the same subject; a chance to compare how big each claim is against what backs it up.
- Trines and sextiles. Often associated with easier exchanges of ideas, shared study or teaching that goes without much friction.
Neither this transit nor a natal Mercury that was retrograde or stationary at birth tells you how intelligent, truthful or able someone is, and neither is evidence of a medical or learning diagnosis, of a declining memory or of communication breaking down. Nothing here predicts an exam result, a contract, a legal or financial outcome, travel trouble or failing equipment, and none of it is a rule for timing decisions around Mercury retrograde. For the slower cycle, which has separate dates and a separate reading, see Saturn transits to natal Mercury. Permanent natal contacts between the two planets are covered in Mercury conjunct Jupiter (natal) and Mercury square Jupiter (natal).
Finding your own Jupiter-Mercury dates
- Copy the degree and minute of natal Mercury, and any retrograde marker, from the free birth chart.
- When the time is missing or uncertain, look up Mercury at the start and end of the possible interval, plus any Mercury station that falls inside it. Check which clock rules (zone and summer time) applied then, and whether the interval crosses into another UT date.
- Apply the eight offsets and look up when Jupiter arrives at each resulting degree, using a Tropical ephemeris. If a Jupiter station comes within a couple of arc-minutes of a target, work from an unrounded natal value and treat the count as uncertain.
- For a Sun comparison, work out the Sun's own targets and dates; do not shift Mercury's dates.
- Record whole days in one time standard.
Mercury and Jupiter have no date cut-off in the free chart. They share one VSOP87B routine, which the repository's test suite compares with the Swiss Ephemeris at 12:00 UT on each day of 1920 to 2060 and at every station of each planet. This example falls inside those years: the Swiss Ephemeris and the site agree on natal Mercury to 0.1 second of arc, and no tabled Jupiter crossing differs by more than 0.03 hours. The Sun uses another astronomia routine with separate coverage, 52 fixed test charts dated 1920 to 2066, each within 0.05° of the Swiss Ephemeris, rather than a daily comparison; here the two differ by about 5 seconds of arc. For dates outside 1920 to 2060, read both natal Mercury and moving Jupiter from a single outside ephemeris giving apparent, geocentric, Tropical longitudes in one time standard. Chiron and Pluto have their own date limits in the free chart, which do not apply to Mercury or Jupiter.
For the general routine, see how to read transits without a transit tool; for natal Mercury's retrograde mark, see Mercury retrograde in the natal chart. Ask the Astrologist can discuss your natal Mercury or any Jupiter dates you have worked out; it does not generate transit dates.
