Mercury Transits Through the Houses: Sun-Tied Entries, Three-Pass Cusps
Updated October 27, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Mercury never strays far from the Sun. Seen from the Earth it stays within about 28° of it, so when the moving Sun works its way through the twelve houses of a birth chart each year, Mercury goes through the same houses at roughly the same time. Roughly is the interesting part. About three times a year Mercury stations, moves backward for about three weeks and then turns forward again, and if that backward loop happens to straddle a house cusp, Mercury crosses that cusp three times: forward, backward, forward again. This page measures both things for one invented chart over thirty years: how closely Mercury's house entries follow the Sun's, and how often a cusp gets a three-pass sequence.
It is not a page about a Mercury return, meaning moving Mercury coming back to the degree of natal Mercury, and it does not list what Mercury means in each house. Natal Mercury in a house is a different topic, a placement you were born with; here the houses stay fixed and Mercury moves through them.
In short, for the example chart:
- Tied to the Sun. In every one of the 360 cusp laps from 2000 to 2029, Mercury's final forward entry into a house came between 27.6 days before and 27.9 days after the Sun's entry into the same house.
- Three passes are common but not the rule. 41 of the 360 laps (about one in nine) were three-pass sequences. Every cusp had between two and five in thirty years, and 25 of the 30 years had at least one somewhere in the chart.
- Most retrograde loops miss the cusps. Of 94 complete retrograde loops in the window, 41 took Mercury back over a cusp and 53 stayed inside one house. None crossed two cusps.
- 2026 has none. All 13 cusp crossings in 2026 are single forward entries, because each of the year's three loops fell inside a single house.
- A three-pass sequence straddles the Sun. Every time it happened, Mercury first crossed 15.8 to 28.3 days before the Sun and crossed for the last time 15.7 to 27.9 days after it.
Educational page. Astrologist.com has no transit tool and no house-ingress calculator, calendar or report. The free birth chart shows natal positions and natal houses only. Every date below was computed offline for an invented person, and dates after October 2026 are model projections.
The chart and the fixed rules
The chart is Lotte's, the invented person from Mars transits through the houses and Sun transits through the houses: born 27 August 1991 at 06:55 in Utrecht on Dutch summer time, which is 04:55 UT. Her natal Placidus cusps were recalculated with the free chart's own routine at the current code and came out identical to the ones published on those two pages:
| Cusp | Longitude | Cusp | Longitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (Ascendant) | 4°44' Virgo | 7th (Descendant) | 4°44' Pisces |
| 2nd | 25°04' Virgo | 8th | 25°04' Pisces |
| 3rd | 21°46' Libra | 9th | 21°46' Aries |
| 4th (IC) | 26°07' Scorpio | 10th (MC) | 26°07' Taurus |
| 5th | 4°37' Capricorn | 11th | 4°37' Cancer |
| 6th | 8°05' Aquarius | 12th | 8°05' Leo |
Her natal Mercury is at 24°18' Leo, retrograde, in her 12th house. That is context only: nothing on this page measures Mercury against natal Mercury.
These rules were written down before a single crossing was solved:
- Mover and targets. Moving Mercury comes from the same planetary routine the chart uses (the astronomia package's VSOP87 theory, apparent longitude of date), with UT turned into ephemeris time the same way. The Sun uses the chart's solar routine. Each cusp is used at the chart's stored 0.01° value.
- One continuous track. Mercury was sampled every hour from late 1998 to early 2031 and unwrapped into one track that keeps counting past 360°, so her 8th cusp at 355.08° and the start of Aries need no special handling, and neither does the Ascendant.
- Crossing, touch, three-pass. A crossing is Mercury changing sides of a cusp on that track, labelled F (forward) or R (backward) and solved to well under a second. A station that only grazes a cusp without changing sides would be a touch, not a crossing. A three-pass sequence is F, then R, then F through the same cusp, with the station that starts the retrograde before the R crossing and the station that ends it after; this was checked, not assumed, for all 41.
- Window. Sequences count when all their crossings fall from 1 January 2000, 00:00 UT, up to but not including 1 January 2030. A sequence cut by either edge is reported separately.
- Sun pairing. Mercury's final forward entry into a house is paired with the Sun's forward entry into the same house that lies nearest in time. For three-pass sequences the first forward entry is also compared with that same Sun entry.
- Detailed year. Every crossing in calendar 2026, Amsterdam time, and nothing chosen afterwards. One extra three-pass example, labelled supplementary, was allowed only if 2026 had none, chosen as the complete sequence whose backward crossing lies nearest to the middle of 2026.
Every Mercury cusp crossing in 2026
Times are Amsterdam clock time, cut to the minute. "Mercury minus Sun" is the number of days between Mercury's final forward entry and the Sun's entry into the same house; minus means Mercury got there first.

Entries from November 2026 on are model projections. The 5th cusp appears twice because Mercury's lap is about a year long but not fixed to the calendar: it reached that cusp late in 2025's lap (on 4 January 2026) and early in 2026's (on 28 December).
Where the order with the Sun flips. Mercury entered her 7th house almost two weeks before the Sun did, yet entered her 8th almost four weeks after it. In between, Mercury stationed retrograde on 26 February at 22°34' Pisces and direct on 20 March at 8°29' Pisces, a loop that lies entirely inside her 7th house (4°44' to 25°04' Pisces). No cusp was crossed backward, but the loop held Mercury in the 7th for 60.8 days. The same thing happened twice more: the loop from 26°15' Cancer back to 16°19' Cancer (29 June to 24 July) sat inside her 11th house, which Mercury occupied for 71.0 days and left two weeks after the Sun had; the loop from 20°58' Scorpio back to 5°01' Scorpio (24 October to 13 November) sat inside her 3rd, giving 70.2 days there. The other complete stays of 2026 ran from 11.0 days (1st house) to 24.9 days (4th house).
The closest any 2026 station came to a cusp was about 2.5°, on 26 February, short of her 8th cusp. That margin is exactly what the birth-time section below tests.
A three-pass sequence, step by step (supplementary)
Because 2026 had none, the rule fixed in advance picks the complete three-pass sequence whose backward crossing lies nearest to the middle of 2026. That is her 4th cusp at 26°07' Scorpio in late 2025:
| Step | Amsterdam clock | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| F, pass 1 of 3 | 25 Oct 2025, 23:54 (UT+2) | Mercury enters her 4th house |
| Station retrograde | 9 Nov 2025, 20:01 | at 6°51' Sagittarius, inside her 4th |
| Sun enters her 4th | 18 Nov 2025, 06:33 | one forward pass, as every year |
| R, pass 2 of 3 | 22 Nov 2025, 01:36 (UT+1) | Mercury backs into her 3rd house |
| Station direct | 29 Nov 2025, 18:38 | at 20°42' Scorpio, inside her 3rd |
| F, pass 3 of 3 | 8 Dec 2025, 14:49 (UT+1) | Mercury enters her 4th house for good |
Mercury's first entry came 23.3 days before the Sun's and its final entry 20.3 days after it, 43.7 days apart. In house terms the 4th was occupied in two separate episodes, 27.1 days and then 27.3 days, with a 16.6-day return to the 3rd in between. From first entry on 25 October 2025 to final exit on 4 January 2026, the net span was 70.9 days, but Mercury was never continuously in the 4th for more than 27.3 of them. Quoting the net span as one stay would hide the re-entry.
Thirty years, cusp by cusp
Every in-window lap of every cusp, 2000 to 2029. "Final forward" is the Mercury-minus-Sun range over all 30 laps of that cusp; "first forward" is shown only for the three-pass laps. Years are the Amsterdam year of the final forward crossing.

Three things stand out.
The Sun-offset window shifts round the chart. For the cusps in late summer and autumn (her 1st to 3rd, crossed in August to October) Mercury's final entry ranged further ahead of the Sun than behind it, and Mercury got there first in 15 to 20 of the 30 years. For the cusps crossed in February to April (her 7th to 9th) the window leans the other way and Mercury was first in only 8 to 10 years. This page does not separate the causes, but one known factor is Mercury's markedly elliptical orbit: how far it can get ahead of or behind the Sun is not the same in every part of the zodiac.
A three-pass lap always brackets the Sun. In all 41 three-pass sequences the first forward entry came before the Sun's and the final one after it, each by 15.7 to 28.3 days, and the three crossings spanned 39.1 to 46.5 days. That follows from the geometry: Mercury moves backward only around the time it passes between the Earth and the Sun, so a backward crossing happens close to the Sun's own position.
Years repeat in a rough rhythm, not exactly. Three-pass years for one cusp are often 6 or 7 years apart (2003, 2009, 2016, 2022, 2029 for her 2nd), because Mercury's loops come back to nearly the same part of the zodiac after about that long, but the gaps vary: several cusps went 13 years without one, and her 11th went 20. Over the whole chart, 2004, 2012, 2022 and 2027 had three each and five years had none.
Edges and touches. One sequence is open at the end of the window: her 5th cusp, crossed forward on 7 December 2029, backward on 4 January 2030 and forward on 18 January 2030. It is not counted above, and none was cut at the start. No station touched a cusp without crossing it; the closest a station came to any cusp level in the window was 2'34". On the hourly track no loop could slip between two samples, which was checked at every one of the 203 stations. "None in the window" here is a statement about these thirty years and this chart, not a claim that something never happens.
How long Mercury stays: episodes, not one number
Because of the loops, "how long was Mercury in my 9th house?" has more than one honest answer. Counting every interval Mercury was actually inside a house as one episode, the 442 complete episodes in the window ran from 2.2 days to 74.0 days.
| House | Width | Laps with a re-entry (of 30) | Shortest episode | Longest episode | First entry to final exit, re-entry laps |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 20.34° | 7 | 6.4 d | 61.8 d | 57.0 to 62.3 d |
| 2nd | 26.69° | 10 | 10.3 d | 65.7 d | 57.3 to 65.8 d |
| 3rd | 34.36° | 9 | 8.1 d | 70.2 d | 62.2 to 69.9 d |
| 4th | 38.49° | 8 | 9.5 d | 72.6 d | 66.5 to 71.8 d |
| 5th | 33.47° | 8 | 7.9 d | 69.1 d | 64.3 to 68.4 d |
| 6th | 26.65° | 8 | 10.0 d | 65.0 d | 57.7 to 64.9 d |
| 7th | 20.34° | 7 | 7.5 d | 61.2 d | 53.1 to 61.4 d |
| 8th | 26.69° | 6 | 8.1 d | 66.1 d | 55.7 to 66.1 d |
| 9th | 34.36° | 6 | 2.2 d | 71.2 d | 58.3 to 70.9 d |
| 10th | 38.49° | 5 | 7.0 d | 74.0 d | 66.2 to 72.3 d |
| 11th | 33.47° | 4 | 13.9 d | 71.3 d | 63.4 to 70.2 d |
| 12th | 26.65° | 4 | 13.2 d | 66.9 d | 61.4 to 66.8 d |
The longest single episodes are the ones like 2026's 7th, 11th and 3rd houses, where a whole loop fits inside the house. The shortest are brief dips across a cusp in a lap with a loop, as short as 2.2 days in her 9th house. In a lap with a re-entry, the first-entry-to-final-exit span is useful for describing the season, while the episodes show what actually happened.
The birth time can turn one pass into three
The cusps depend on the birth time; Mercury's path does not. The cusps were recalculated with the free chart's routine at six birth times fixed in advance (one hour, fifteen minutes and four minutes either side of 06:55), Mercury was left unchanged, and the 2026 sequences were solved again. All six charts were still Placidus charts; Utrecht is far below the 66° limit discussed in chart angles at high latitudes.
| Birth time | Ascendant | 2026 cusps that changed pass count | Final-entry shift, unchanged cusps |
|---|---|---|---|
| -60 min | 24°18' Leo | 8th and 4th become three-pass | 5.2 to 9.2 days earlier |
| -15 min | 2°07' Virgo | 8th becomes three-pass | 1.3 to 2.5 days earlier |
| -4 min | 4°02' Virgo | none | 0.4 to 0.7 days earlier |
| +4 min | 5°25' Virgo | none | 0.4 to 0.7 days later |
| +15 min | 7°21' Virgo | none | 1.3 to 2.4 days later |
| +60 min | 15°12' Virgo | 7th, 11th and 3rd become three-pass | 5.5 to 9.4 days later |
Fifteen minutes earlier, her 8th cusp moves back to about 22°05' Pisces, below the 22°34' Pisces where Mercury stationed in February, so the February loop now straddles it: Mercury crosses forward on 23 February, backward on 28 February and forward again on 9 April, and the house entry moves by weeks rather than days. An hour later, the cusps move forward by 10° to 14° and land inside all three 2026 loops. Four minutes either way changed no pass count in 2026 but already moved some entries to another calendar date (2 of 13 at -4 minutes, 10 of 13 at +4). With no reliable birth time there are no reliable house entries, and no fallback house system is substituted for missing ones: see birth chart without a birth time and how accurate does a birth time need to be.
Rounding, solver tolerance and a second ephemeris
These are three separate questions. Using the unrounded cusps instead of the stored 0.01° values moved the 2026 entries by at most 4.2 minutes; reading the displayed degree and minute back as longitudes moved them by at most 14.9 minutes. Neither changed a date or a pass count. The crossings themselves were solved to well under a second, which is a property of the search, not of the model.
The Swiss Ephemeris was used only as an independent offline reference, never for a date on this page. At the 13 crossing instants of 2026 its Mercury was within 0.12 arc-seconds of the cusp, and solving the crossings again with Swiss Mercury moved them by about a second; its 2026 stations agreed with the chart's to within 0.2 minutes. Its Placidus cusps differ from the stored ones by up to 15.4 arc-seconds, which is the 0.01° storage rounding. Those are observed values for these dates, not error bounds. The repository's golden chart fixtures test planets and cusps to 0.05°, a chart test rather than an ingress-time accuracy figure. The Sun dates come from the chart's solar routine, which on the Sun page differed from the Swiss Sun by up to about a quarter of an hour at the entry instants, so read the Mercury-minus-Sun offsets to a tenth of a day, not to the minute.
Reading Mercury's weeks in a house
Astrologers often read Mercury's time in a natal house as a pointer to where thinking, talk, errands and paperwork tend to cluster for a few weeks, in the themes of that house as set out in house meanings and coloured by what Mercury signs mean. A three-pass sequence is sometimes read as a topic that comes up, gets revisited and is then settled. Treat any of this as an optional prompt for reflection. Mercury's retrograde loops are geometry, the view from a faster-moving Earth, explained in retrograde planets and the Sun; they do not forecast mishaps, and nothing here predicts an event, a decision or anything about health, relationships, money, contracts or travel.
Finding your own Mercury entries
- Take your natal cusps from the free birth chart (this needs a known birth time) and write each as a longitude from 0° Aries; how to find your house cusps shows how.
- As a first guess, look up the date the Sun crosses each cusp. Mercury's final entry will lie within about four weeks of it.
- In a Tropical ephemeris, find the days Mercury passes each cusp longitude in that range. Check the retrograde stations: if a station falls on the far side of a cusp, expect three crossings, and note all three.
- Convert from UT to your local clock, and ask how good your birth time is before trusting any single date.
The general method is on transits through the houses. For the same houses crossed by a slower inner planet whose loops are rarer but much longer, see Venus transits through the houses. Ask the Astrologist can talk through your natal houses or a date you found yourself; it does not compute house-entry dates.
