Mars Transits Through the Houses, Including the 12th House

If you were born with Mars in a house, that is a natal placement, described on pages like Mars in the 12th house, and it belongs to you for life. A Mars transit through a house is the planet's current position passing through the fixed houses of your birth chart, a visit that usually lasts weeks and, around a retrograde, can last months. Astrologist.com does not offer a transit calculator and does not show transiting Mars on your chart. This page explains the technique and walks through a full example so you can find your own dates by hand.

You need a reliable birth time, your natal cusps as numbers, and Mars positions from an ephemeris. The general method is on transits through the houses, and the cusp workflow on how to find your house cusps.

A Mars cycle through one chart

The example is Lotte, a fictional person born on 27 August 1991 at 06:55 in Utrecht, with Virgo rising and Placidus houses. Mars takes roughly two years to circle the zodiac. Here is one circuit of her houses, starting in September 2024.

Computed with the ephemeris routines behind the free chart, checking Mars every hour against Lotte's cusps. Dates are UTC. Days are the elapsed time between the hourly crossing times, counted in 24-hour days and rounded to the nearest whole day, so a count can differ by one from subtracting the printed dates. The same convention applies to the day counts below.

The same 11th house held Mars for 236 days in 2024 to 2025 and 55 days in 2026. The difference is the retrograde period: in the first pass Mars turned around inside the house, near 6°10' Leo, under two degrees short of her 12th cusp at 8°05' Leo. Mars also changed sign three times in that stretch, from Cancer to Leo, back to Cancer and into Leo again, without leaving her 11th. Mars moved fastest through her houses in early 2026, when it took 26 days to cross her narrow 7th.

Mars transiting the 12th house, and why it can keep coming back

If transiting Mars is in your 12th house, the practical question is when it entered and when it finally leaves, and Lotte's chart shows why that can be confusing. Mars reached her 12th cusp at 8°05' Leo on 12 October 2026. What follows comes from the same hourly calculation:

Date (UTC) Event House
12 Oct 2026 Mars crosses the 12th cusp 12th
9 Dec 2026 Mars crosses the Ascendant at 4°44' Virgo 1st
10 Jan 2027 Mars turns retrograde at about 10°25' Virgo 1st
9 Feb 2027 Mars crosses back over the Ascendant 12th
1 Apr 2027 Mars turns direct at about 20°55' Leo 12th
26 May 2027 Mars crosses the Ascendant for the third time 1st

Between 12 October 2026 and 26 May 2027 Mars spends 164 of 226 days in her 12th house, in two parts, and crosses her Ascendant three times. Its sign changes do not line up with any of this: Mars enters Virgo on 25 November 2026, goes back into Leo on 21 February 2027 and returns to Virgo on 14 May 2027. Anyone reading the house from the sign alone would be up to two weeks out each time.

How the 12th house transit is read. The 12th covers rest, retreat, the unconscious, endings, and what happens out of public view. Mars here is often described as energy turned inward or behind the scenes: working on something not yet shown, needing more sleep or solitude than usual, anger that is felt but not expressed, or effort spent on closing something down. A long retrograde stay, as in Lotte's 2026 to 2027 example, is often read as a period for reworking that private effort rather than pushing it out. The return across the Ascendant is usually described as the point where Mars energy becomes visible again. None of this predicts a particular event.

Mars through the other houses

Mars is read as drive, initiative, desire, courage and friction. Astrologers read a transit through a house as pointing to the area of life where drive, urgency and sometimes friction may be more noticeable for the length of the stay. These are themes to reflect on, not predictions of events. In Placidus houses the 4th and 10th cusps are the IC and MC. Under the Equal-house fallback the free chart uses for birthplaces at an absolute latitude greater than 66°, the wheel's IC and MC labels mark the 4th and 10th cusps, which need not be the true IC and MC; chart angles at high latitudes explains why.

Mars transiting the 1st house

Crossing the Ascendant, Mars is linked with a burst of personal initiative, physical energy and directness. Impatience and haste are the usual themes to reflect on, along with pacing yourself. Starting things yourself, rather than waiting, is the classic theme.

Mars transiting the 2nd house

Astrologers link this stay with energy directed toward earning, buying and defending what is yours. They describe more effort put into income, impulsive spending, or arguments about money and possessions.

Mars transiting the 3rd house

A sharper, quicker tone in conversation, writing and local errands. Debates, busy short trips, and friction with siblings or neighbours are common readings, as is a productive spell for anything that needs to be said plainly.

Mars transiting the 4th house

Crossing the 4th house cusp, the IC in Placidus charts, Mars turns toward home and family. Repairs, plans to move, clearing out, or tension within the family are themes astrologers associate with this stay. It is often described as energy spent on private foundations rather than public goals.

Mars transiting the 5th house

Creative drive, romance, sport and play. Mars here is associated with enthusiasm, competitiveness in games, passion in love affairs, and risk-taking for the fun of it.

Mars transiting the 6th house

Astrologers link this stay with a faster pace in work and daily routines. A heavy workload, a push on fitness, conflict with colleagues, or overwork are the themes usually listed, and pacing is a useful question to reflect on.

Mars transiting the 7th house

On the Descendant, Mars energises dealings with partners, rivals and anyone you face one to one. Direct negotiation, open disagreement, or a partner who is especially active are typical readings.

Mars transiting the 8th house

Shared money, debts, intimacy and power within close bonds. Mars here is linked with pushing to settle joint finances, intense feelings, and confronting matters usually left alone.

Mars transiting the 9th house

Energy for travel, study, belief and argument about ideas. Astrologers describe a readiness to defend opinions, take a trip at short notice, or throw yourself into a course.

Mars transiting the 10th house

Crossing the 10th house cusp, the MC in Placidus charts, Mars turns toward career and public standing. Ambition, visible initiative at work, and friction with authority figures are the themes astrologers commonly associate with it.

Mars transiting the 11th house

Activity in friendships, groups and causes. Organising, campaigning, or disagreements within a group are typical readings, and so is new drive toward a long-range goal.

Finding your own Mars dates

  1. List your twelve cusp longitudes.
  2. From an ephemeris, find the day Mars first reaches or passes each cusp.
  3. Look up whether Mars has a retrograde period in the coming months, and the longitudes of its two stations. A cusp is crossed three times only if it lies between the two station longitudes, so that Mars passes it going forward, again going backward, and once more going forward. A station that stops short of a cusp, however close, adds no crossing: in December 2024 Mars turned retrograde under two degrees short of Lotte's 12th cusp, and the whole loop stayed inside her 11th. Check every day around any cusp the loop does cross.
  4. Give each date to the day and name the time standard you used.

The wheel is no help for this: Mars moves about half a degree to three-quarters of a degree a day at normal speed, close to the margin of error of an eye estimate. Mars retrograde in the natal chart covers the natal side of retrograde Mars. For longer stays in a house, compare Jupiter transits through the houses. Your natal Mars is on the free birth chart.
