Chiron Transits Through the Houses: One Year in One House, Nine in Another

← Back to Transits

This page is about moving (transiting) Chiron passing over the fixed house cusps of a birth chart, not about where Chiron sits in the birth chart itself. Natal Chiron in a house is a fixed placement, described on pages such as Chiron in the 1st house. Here the cusps stay fixed at their birth positions and Chiron moves through them over its cycle of about fifty years.

Ask how long moving Chiron stays in one of your houses and the usual answer, about four years per house, is rarely a good guide. Chiron's orbit is so stretched that it covers some signs in under two years and others in about eight. The size of each house matters too, since Placidus houses are unequal, but in the example below Chiron's changing speed outweighed house size by a wide margin. This page measures both for one invented chart over one complete circuit.

In short, for the example chart:

  • From 1.1 to 8.9 years per house. Over one full circuit of 50.1 years, moving Chiron took 1.1 years to cross her 1st house and 8.9 years to cross her 9th.
  • Speed outweighed size. Her houses differ in width by a factor of about 1.9; the time Chiron needed per degree of house differed by a factor of about 6.4, from 17 days per degree in late Virgo and Libra to 106 days per degree in Pisces.
  • Same width, very different stays. Her 1st and 7th houses are both 20.34° wide. Chiron crossed the 1st in 1.1 years and the 7th in 5.9.
  • Cusps crossed once, three times or five times. In the circuit, four of her cusps were crossed once and seven three times; her 8th cusp, where two retrograde loops in a row straddled it, was crossed five times from 2016 to 2018.

Educational page. Astrologist.com offers no transit tool and no calculator, calendar or report for house entries or Chiron transits. The free birth chart shows natal positions and natal houses only, with Chiron for birth dates from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060. All dates here were worked out offline for an invented person, with the same Chiron table and house routine as the chart; anything after October 2026 is a model projection.

Chart, method and the rules fixed in advance

The example is Lotte, the invented person on the other house-tour pages, born in Utrecht on 27 August 1991 at 06:55 summer time (04:55 UT). Her Placidus cusps, recomputed with the free chart's code before any Chiron date was solved and unchanged from Sun transits through the houses, run from 4°44' Virgo on the Ascendant through 25°04' Virgo, 21°46' Libra, 26°07' Scorpio (IC), 4°37' Capricorn and 8°05' Aquarius, with the opposite six cusps exactly opposite. Her house widths go from 20.34° (1st and 7th) to 38.49° (4th and 10th). Natal Chiron at 4°09' Leo lies in her 11th house, just before her 12th cusp at 8°05' Leo.

  • Chiron comes from the daily table behind the free chart (orbital elements from Lowell Observatory's astorb database, daily positions generated by Astrologist.com at 12:00 UT, linearly interpolated), read with the same routine as the chart. Cusps are taken at the stored 0.01° values. The table covers 1920 to 2060 and nothing outside it was used.
  • Track. Chiron was sampled every 6 hours and joined into one continuous longitude, so every cusp, including the Ascendant and the 0° Aries wrap, is handled the same way. Each crossing was refined to under a minute within the interpolated table, which is an arithmetic tolerance only. Turning points (stations) are given to the day only, because the table is daily.
  • One complete circuit. Lotte was born with Chiron inside her 11th house, so counting from birth would cut that house in two. The circuit therefore starts at the first cusp after natal Chiron, her 12th cusp, at Chiron's final forward crossing of it (22 June 1992), and ends at its final forward crossing of the same cusp one full 360° later (2 August 2042). The continuous track confirms that the end is exactly one circuit on. Each of the twelve houses is crossed completely inside it.
  • Definitions. F is a forward crossing of a cusp, R a backward one. A turning point that reached a cusp without crossing it would count as a touch; there were none. A house's traversal runs from Chiron's final forward entry into it to its final forward entry into the next house; the twelve traversals add up exactly to the circuit. An episode is any uninterrupted interval inside a house. The continuous stay is the longest episode. The net span runs from first entry to final exit and is never presented as one continuous stay.
  • Speed versus size. House size is the stored width in degrees. The speed measure is days per degree: traversal time divided by width. Its inverse, degrees per year, is an average over the whole traversal, not Chiron's speed on any one day.

Entries from 2034 on are model projections. The 9th house traversal, from March 2025 to February 2034, is mostly a projection too.

Speed against size

Placidus houses in Lotte's chart come in opposite pairs of equal width, which makes a clean comparison: each pair has the same size, so any difference in time comes from where in the zodiac the house lies.

Equal-width pair Width Fast-side house Slow-side house Ratio
1st and 7th 20.34° 1st (Virgo): 1.1 years 7th (Pisces): 5.9 years 5.2
2nd and 8th 26.69° 2nd (Virgo-Libra): 1.2 years 8th (Pisces-Aries): 7.2 years 5.9
3rd and 9th 34.36° 3rd (Libra-Scorpio): 2.1 years 9th (Aries-Taurus): 8.9 years 4.2
4th and 10th 38.49° 4th (Scorpio-Capricorn): 3.9 years 10th (Taurus-Cancer): 5.3 years 1.4
5th and 11th 33.47° 11th (Cancer-Leo): 3.1 years 5th (Capricorn-Aquarius): 4.2 years 1.3
6th and 12th 26.65° 12th (Leo-Virgo): 2.0 years 6th (Aquarius-Pisces): 5.1 years 2.6

Her widest houses, the 4th and 10th, were not the slowest to cross. Her 7th, one of the two narrowest, took longer (5.9 years) than her widest fast-side house, the 4th (3.9 years). The longest traversal of all, 8.9 years, was the 9th, a middle-sized house lying across Aries and early Taurus, where Chiron gained only about 3.5° to 4° a year.

Days per degree shows the same thing without the width: from 17 in her 2nd house (late Virgo and Libra) to 106 in her 7th (Pisces), a factor of about 6.4, while widths differ by a factor of about 1.9. That does not split each stay into "so many years from size and so many from speed"; the two act together and cannot be cleanly separated. It shows which one varied more in this chart.

For comparison, the Saturn house tour uses the same chart and the same cusps, and there Saturn's stays ran from under two to nearly four years: Saturn's speed is much more even, so its stays follow house width far more closely.

Crossings, loops and split stays

Every year Chiron turns retrograde for four to five months and moves back about 4.5° to 6.5°. Where a cusp lies inside one of those backward stretches, Chiron crosses it forward, back and forward again. In this circuit that happened at seven cusps, and four were crossed only once. At her 8th cusp, in Pisces, where Chiron's yearly progress is smaller than its backward loop, two loops in a row straddled the cusp:

Date (UT) Her 8th cusp, 25°04' Pisces Chiron now in
7 Jun 2016 crossed forward (1 of 5) 8th
27 Jun 2016 turned retrograde at 25°15' Pisces, 11' past the cusp
17 Jul 2016 crossed back (2 of 5) 7th
1 Dec 2016 turned direct at 20°40' Pisces
21 Mar 2017 crossed forward (3 of 5) 8th
1 Jul 2017 turned retrograde at 28°52' Pisces
24 Oct 2017 crossed back (4 of 5) 7th
5 Dec 2017 turned direct at 24°19' Pisces
15 Jan 2018 crossed forward for the last time (5 of 5) 8th

The other cusps, in order: 12th cusp F 9 Oct 1991, R 4 Jan 1992, F 22 Jun 1992 (before the circuit starts, shown for context); 1st cusp F 11 Oct 1993, R 15 Mar 1994, F 16 Jun 1994; 2nd cusp F 3 Dec 1994, R 18 Feb 1995, F 3 Aug 1995; 3rd and 4th cusps once each (23 Oct 1996, 5 Dec 1998); 5th cusp F 24 Jan 2002, R 22 Jul 2002, F 22 Oct 2002; 6th cusp F 21 Mar 2006, R 11 Jul 2006, F 5 Jan 2007; 7th cusp F 30 Apr 2011, R 19 Jul 2011, F 18 Feb 2012; 9th cusp F 21 May 2024, R 2 Oct 2024, F 22 Mar 2025; 10th cusp F 18 May 2033, R 22 Jan 2034, F 15 Feb 2034; 11th and 12th cusps once each (19 Jun 2039, 2 Aug 2042).

Because of those loops, "how long was Chiron in the house" has three different answers:

House Episodes inside the house Continuous stay (longest episode) Net span (first entry to final exit)
12th 3 (the first before the circuit starts) 1.3 years 2.7 years (Oct 1991 to Jun 1994)
1st 3 0.5 years 1.8 years
2nd 2 1.2 years 1.9 years
3rd 1 2.1 years 2.1 years
4th 2 3.1 years 3.9 years
5th 3 3.4 years 4.9 years
6th 3 4.3 years 5.9 years
7th 4 4.3 years 6.7 years
8th 4 6.3 years 8.8 years
9th 3 8.2 years 9.7 years
10th 2 5.3 years 6.1 years
11th 1 3.1 years 3.1 years

Her 1st house is the clearest case. Chiron first entered it on 11 October 1993 and finally left it on 3 August 1995, but it was never inside for longer than 170 days at a time: three episodes of about five months each, separated by spells back in the 12th and then forward in the 2nd. Net spans overlap the neighbouring houses and do not add up to the circuit; the traversals in the first table do.

The closest call came at her 10th cusp. On 30 August 2032 Chiron is projected to turn retrograde at 26°06' Taurus, 1'08" short of the cusp, so that loop does not cross it. The crossings come a year later instead, and the direct turn on 3 February 2034 at 26°03' Taurus lies only about 5' inside the 9th house, so the backward and final forward crossings are just over three weeks apart (22 January and 15 February 2034). The Swiss Ephemeris, checked independently, also places that 2032 turning point short of the cusp.

Birth time: a few minutes change the loops

The cusps were recalculated with the free chart's routine at six birth times fixed in advance (60, 15 and 4 minutes either side of 06:55), with Chiron's path unchanged. Every shifted chart remained a Placidus chart.

Birth time Ascendant Change in crossings per cusp Shift of the final entry dates
-60 min 24°18' Leo the 12th cusp falls behind natal Chiron, which now starts in her 12th house; 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th cusps three crossings to one; 3rd and 11th one to three 4 months to 4 years earlier
-15 min 2°07' Virgo 1st and 5th three to one; 8th five to three; 11th one to three 3 weeks to a year earlier
-4 min 4°02' Virgo 8th five to three; 11th one to three; the 10th cusp is crossed by the 2032 loop instead of the 2033 to 2034 one mostly 1 to 3 weeks earlier; 8th about 10 months and 10th about 9 months earlier
+4 min 5°25' Virgo 7th and 9th three crossings to five; 8th five to three mostly 1 to 5 weeks later; 7th and 9th about 10 months later
+15 min 7°21' Virgo 12th (start) and 2nd three to one; 4th and 11th one to three 3 weeks to a year later
+60 min 15°12' Virgo 1st and 2nd three to one; 8th five to three; 11th one to three 3 months to 4 years later

A few minutes of birth time move the cusps by under a degree, but Chiron covers a degree slowly, so even ±4 minutes moved most final entries by about a week or more. Near a turning point the effect is far larger: a cusp that sits just inside or just outside a loop changes from one crossing to three, or from three to five, and the final entry jumps by most of a year. With an uncertain birth time, treat any Chiron house date near a turning point as uncertain by a year or more. The free chart shows no houses at all without a birth time; see how accurate does a birth time need to be.

The next circuit, as far as the table goes

As a secondary check, the same final-entry rule was applied to the second circuit up to the end of the table. Six traversals fit before 2061, all model projections: 12th house 2.0 years (2042 to 2044, against 2.0 in the first circuit), 1st 1.1 (1.1), 2nd 1.9 (1.2), 3rd 2.1 (2.1), 4th 3.2 (3.9) and 5th 4.2 (4.2). Where the two circuits differ, a loop has moved over a cusp. Her 2nd cusp, crossed three times in 1994 and 1995, is crossed once in 2045, and her 3rd cusp, crossed once in 1996, is crossed three times in 2046 and 2047; together they make the 2nd house traversal about eight months longer. Her 4th cusp, crossed once in 1998, is crossed three times in 2049, which pushes the final entry into her 4th house later and makes that traversal about nine months shorter. Chiron's circuits repeat broadly, not date for date. The rest of the second circuit falls after 2060 and is not computed.

Rounding, tolerance and the Swiss check

Four separate things limit these dates, and they are kept apart:

  • The arithmetic. Each crossing was solved to under a minute on the interpolated table.
  • The table. Daily positions with straight-line interpolation; turning points to the day only.
  • The repository's checks. The Chiron table is tested against the Swiss Ephemeris to 0.05° at every daily sample, with a separate gate on station timing. Those are tolerances for the whole table, not error bars on these dates.
  • What the Swiss Ephemeris showed here. As an independent reference, and not a source of any date on this page, its Chiron lay within 0.7" of the cusp at all 33 crossing instants in this circuit. Solving the crossings again with Swiss Chiron moved them by at most 8 minutes, except the two beside the February 2034 turning point, which moved by about 16 and 17 minutes. All 102 turning points from 1991 to 2043 fell on the same UT date. These are observed differences for these dates, not guaranteed accuracy.

Cusp rounding matters more. With the unrounded cusps instead of the stored 0.01° values, final entries moved by at most about an hour and a half, except at her 10th cusp, next to the 2034 turning point, where the final entry moved by almost eight hours and changed date. Reading the displayed degree and minute back as longitudes moved most final entries by up to 9 hours and the 10th by about a day, and changed a crossing date at four cusps. No crossing count changed in either case.

Reading moving Chiron in a house

Astrologers who follow Chiron transits sometimes read moving Chiron's time in a natal house as a period when the themes of that house (see house meanings) invite a gentler, more patient look: where you may feel less sure of yourself, and what you have learned to do with that. A long traversal is then read as a longer season of that reflection, and a split stay as a theme that is revisited. Use any of it only as an optional prompt. Moving Chiron in a house does not cause anything, does not mean that something painful will happen or has to be uncovered, and says nothing about health, relationships, money or events. For anything to do with health or past experiences, a qualified professional is the right guide, not a chart.

Doing it for your own chart

  1. Get your cusps as longitudes from the free birth chart (a known birth time is required); how to find your house cusps explains how.
  2. In a Tropical ephemeris, list Chiron's retrograde and direct turns for the years you care about. A cusp between the two turning points of one loop is crossed three times; where two loops overlap, in late Aquarius to Taurus, it can be crossed five times.
  3. Find when Chiron passes each cusp longitude, and expect the slow houses to take several times longer than the fast ones even if they are the same size.
  4. Weigh every date against how well you know your birth time, and remember that Chiron dates from November 2026 on are projections in any ephemeris. The table behind the free chart ends in 2060; for later dates use a named external source and take your natal positions from the same source.

The general method is on transits through the houses. Ask the Astrologist can discuss your natal houses or a date you have worked out; it does not compute house-entry dates.
