Saturn Transits Through the Houses: All Twelve, by Degree

Natal Saturn in a house is part of your birth chart and stays there for life; the natal pages, starting with Saturn in the 1st house, describe those placements. This page is about transiting Saturn: the planet's position in the sky now, or on a date you pick, as it moves through the fixed houses of your birth chart over roughly 29 years. Astrologist.com has no transit tool, so it does not calculate where Saturn is in your houses. What follows is an astrological technique explained by the site, which you can apply to your own chart with your cusp degrees and an ephemeris.

To place Saturn in a natal house you need a reliable birth time and your twelve cusps as numbers. The method, the boundary rule and the reasons a wheel estimate cannot time a crossing are on the transits through the houses page. The cusp workflow is on how to find your house cusps.

One full Saturn cycle in one chart

Lotte is the fictional example used across these guides: Utrecht, 27 August 1991, 06:55 local time, Placidus houses, Virgo rising, natal Saturn at 1°22' Aquarius in her 5th house. The table follows transiting Saturn from the first time it entered her 6th house in 1992 to the last time it left her 5th in 2021. "Final exit" is the date Saturn crossed into the next house for the last time; where the two dates overlap with the next row, Saturn crossed a cusp more than once.

House Width First entry Final exit Entries First entry to final exit
6th 26.65° 20 Jan 1992 9 Mar 1994 1 2.1 years
7th 20.34° 9 Mar 1994 27 Feb 1996 1 2.0 years
8th 26.69° 27 Feb 1996 1 Apr 1998 1 2.1 years
9th 34.36° 1 Apr 1998 14 Mar 2001 2 3.0 years
10th 38.49° 26 Jun 2000 9 Jul 2003 2 3.0 years
11th 33.47° 9 Jul 2003 11 Jun 2006 2 2.9 years
12th 26.65° 22 Sep 2005 3 Jul 2008 3 2.8 years
1st 20.34° 13 Oct 2007 18 Sep 2009 2 1.9 years
2nd 26.69° 18 Sep 2009 26 Oct 2011 1 2.1 years
3rd 34.36° 26 Oct 2011 20 Nov 2014 1 3.1 years
4th 38.49° 20 Nov 2014 28 Oct 2018 2 3.9 years
5th 33.47° 29 Jan 2018 18 Nov 2021 3 3.8 years

Dates are UTC calendar dates, computed with the ephemeris routines behind the free chart by checking Saturn's longitude every hour against Lotte's cusps.

What the table shows. The shortest stays were in her two narrowest houses, the 1st and 7th, at about two years. The longest, her 4th, ran close to four, partly because the house is wide and partly because Saturn turned retrograde near its far cusp, crossing into the 5th, back into the 4th and into the 5th again. Width is not the whole story: her 3rd house (34.36°) took slightly longer than her wider 10th (38.49°), because Saturn's speed varies along its orbit. The figure often quoted for Saturn, about two and a half years, is an average per sign. Signs are all 30°; houses are not. Any stay length belongs to one chart only.

The cycle is continuing. Saturn entered Lotte's 8th house on 6 April 2025, crosses into her 9th on 11 May 2027, returns to the 8th on 25 November 2027 and enters the 9th for good on 21 January 2028.

Saturn through each house

Saturn is read as the planet of structure, limits, duty and time. In a house it tends to show where astrologers expect things to be tested for soundness, slowed down and rebuilt on firmer terms. These are themes to reflect on, not forecasts. In Placidus houses the 4th and 10th cusps are the IC and MC. Under the Equal-house fallback the free chart uses for birthplaces at an absolute latitude greater than 66°, the wheel's IC and MC labels mark the 4th and 10th cusps, which need not be the true IC and MC; chart angles at high latitudes explains why.

Saturn transiting the 1st house

Crossing the Ascendant, Saturn reaches the house of the body, the face you show and the way you start things. This stay is often described as a time of taking yourself more seriously: a plainer, more reserved presentation, fewer things begun on impulse, and more attention to stamina. In Lotte's chart Saturn crossed her Ascendant on 13 October 2007, retreated into the 12th on 29 February 2008 and crossed again on 3 July 2008.

Saturn transiting the 2nd house

The 2nd covers money you earn and keep, possessions and the sense of worth tied to them. Astrologers look here for budgeting, paying down, building an income skill by skill, and asking which possessions and values still earn their place. Anxiety about having enough is one way the transit is described; a sounder relationship with resources is another.

Saturn transiting the 3rd house

The 3rd is daily talk, writing, short trips, study, siblings and the neighbourhood. Saturn here is linked with disciplined learning, careful wording, formal paperwork and more serious conversations with brothers, sisters or neighbours. Some describe a heavier, more doubtful mental tone, which tends to lift as the skill is built.

Saturn transiting the 4th house

Saturn crosses the 4th house cusp, the IC in Placidus charts, into the house of home, family and private foundations. Typical themes are housing commitments, repairs, responsibilities to parents or relatives, and a closer look at the emotional ground you stand on. It is often called a lower-visibility stretch, with effort going into what others do not see.

Saturn transiting the 5th house

The 5th is creativity, romance, children, play and what you do for joy. Saturn can make pleasure feel effortful, or ask for commitment where things were casual: practising a craft properly, taking a relationship seriously, responsibilities connected with children. Lotte's Saturn return fell in this house, because her natal Saturn is here; Saturn return by sign and house covers that overlap.

Saturn transiting the 6th house

Work routines, health habits, skills and service are the 6th house subjects. Saturn is associated here with workload, restructured schedules, maintenance of the body over the long run, and duties that need doing whether or not anyone notices. Efficiency and fatigue are the two sides astrologers usually name.

Saturn transiting the 7th house

Crossing the Descendant, Saturn enters the house of partnerships, contracts and one-to-one dealings. This passage is commonly linked with defining commitments, formal agreements, testing whether a partnership is built to last, and meeting people who bring weight or obligation. It describes the structure of relationships, not a verdict on any one of them.

Saturn transiting the 8th house

The 8th covers shared money, debts, taxes, intimacy, and what is held jointly with others. Saturn here is read as sorting out joint finances, honouring obligations, and facing fears or endings with more steadiness. Psychologically minded astrologers also link it with confronting what has long been avoided.

Saturn transiting the 9th house

Belief, higher study, long travel, law and publishing belong to the 9th. Saturn suggests structured study, qualifications earned slowly, testing a philosophy against experience, or travel that comes with practical obligations. Opinions held loosely may be examined and either firmed up or dropped.

Saturn transiting the 10th house

Crossing the 10th house cusp, the MC in Placidus charts, Saturn reaches the house of career, public role and reputation. Astrologers often treat this as a period when the structures of working life are measured: responsibility and visibility tend to grow together, and what was built earlier may be judged on its merits. For Lotte the crossing came twice, on 26 June 2000 and, after a retreat into the 9th, on 14 March 2001.

Saturn transiting the 11th house

The 11th is friends, groups, networks and long-range hopes. Saturn here is linked with pruning a social circle, taking on a role within a group, and turning wishes into plans with dates. Fewer, more reliable connections is a common description.

Saturn transiting the 12th house

The 12th covers solitude, retreat, the unconscious, endings, and institutions such as hospitals or archives. This stay is often described as a closing phase before Saturn reaches the Ascendant again: quiet work, tidying up unfinished matters, and time spent away from view. Lotte's 12th cusp saw three crossings, on 22 September 2005, 25 January 2006 (back into the 11th) and 11 June 2006.

Checking the dates for your own chart

  1. Get your twelve cusp longitudes from a source set to the Tropical zodiac and the same house system as your free chart.
  2. Take Saturn's longitude from an ephemeris that states its time of day, usually 00:00 UT.
  3. Find the dates when Saturn reaches each cusp. Near a station, check every day around the crossing: Saturn can sit within a few minutes of arc of a cusp for weeks.
  4. Give the result to the day at best, and say which time standard you used.

Contacts between transiting Saturn and your natal planets, the Saturn return among them, are a separate layer. What is a Saturn return? and reading transits without a tool cover that. The Jupiter and outer-planet guides use the same chart for comparison, and Ask the Astrologist can discuss your natal Saturn while you keep transit dates from your own source.
