Uranus, Neptune and Pluto Transits Through the Houses

Natal Uranus, Neptune and Pluto sit in fixed houses of your birth chart, and those placements do not change. Transiting Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are the same planets as they move on after your birth, so slowly that one natal house can host them for most of a decade or longer. Astrologist.com has no transit tool and does not mark their current positions on your chart. This guide covers the astrological technique: how to tell which of your natal houses each outer planet is crossing, how long those stays run in a worked example, and how astrologers read them.

The three planets are on one page because each house section would otherwise be thin, and because the same practical problems apply to all of them: very long stays, and stations close to a cusp. The general method is on transits through the houses; you need a reliable birth time and your house cusps as numbers.

Years in a house, not months

Lotte, the fictional example for these guides, was born in Utrecht on 27 August 1991 at 06:55 local time (Virgo rising, Placidus). Her natal Uranus is at 10°03' Capricorn and Neptune at 14°13' Capricorn, both in her 5th house; natal Pluto is at 17°48' Scorpio in her 3rd. Here is where the three have travelled since, by the ephemeris routines behind the free chart, checked hourly against her cusps (UTC dates):

Planet House First entry Final exit Entries First entry to final exit
Uranus 6th 5 Apr 1997 19 Jan 2005 3 7.8 years
Uranus 7th 28 Mar 2004 18 Feb 2010 3 5.9 years
Uranus 8th 28 Apr 2009 21 Feb 2017 3 7.8 years
Uranus 9th 3 May 2016 27 Apr 2025 3 9.0 years
Uranus 10th 10 Jul 2024 30 May 2034 3 9.9 years
Neptune 6th 21 Mar 2001 15 Feb 2014 3 12.9 years
Neptune 7th 19 Apr 2013 1 Jan 2024 4 10.7 years
Neptune 8th 22 May 2022 4 Apr 2035 4 12.9 years
Pluto 4th 5 Dec 1993 12 Dec 2010 3 17.0 years
Pluto 5th 10 Feb 2010 3 Nov 2029 4 19.7 years

The 10th house stay for Uranus comes out longer than the 7th mostly because the 10th is almost twice as wide (38.49° against 20.34°). Uranus is also travelling at different speeds through different parts of the zodiac. A sign figure such as "seven years per sign" for Uranus does not convert into a house figure.

Stations near a cusp: the long back-and-forth

Outer planets spend about five to six months of every year retrograde, so each year's loop covers a few degrees of the zodiac. A cusp that lies between the retrograde and direct station longitudes is crossed three times: forward, back, and forward again. For the slowest planets, consecutive loops can overlap, and a cusp inside two of them is crossed five times, as in both examples below. A loop that stays wholly inside one house adds no crossing, however close its station comes to a cusp, so check the station longitudes rather than assuming repeats.

  • Neptune and Lotte's 8th cusp (25°04' Pisces). Neptune crossed it on 22 May 2022, went back on 4 August 2022, crossed again on 15 March 2023, went back on 10 November 2023 and crossed for the last time on 1 January 2024. Its direct station on 6 December 2023 was at about 24°53' Pisces, 0.19° short of the cusp.
  • Pluto and her 6th cusp (8°05' Aquarius). Pluto first crosses on 12 March 2028 and goes back on 9 July 2028, crosses again on 17 January 2029, goes back on 7 October 2029 and crosses for good on 3 November 2029. The last dip is only about 0.04° deep: Pluto turns direct around 21 October 2029 at roughly 308.05°, against a cusp at 308.09°.

A dip of a few hundredths of a degree is far below what a wheel or a whole-degree table can show, and smaller than the shift in the cusp that a birth time one minute different would make. Present such a crossing as calculated for the stated chart and precision, and treat it as borderline in your reading.

Slow, but still personal

Because the outer planets move so slowly, people born within a few years of each other have them in the same signs, which is why they are often described generationally. That does not extend to houses. Your cusps depend on your birth minute and place, so the dates when an outer planet crosses them are yours alone.

A fictional person born on the same day as Lotte, in the same city, three hours later at 09:55, has Libra rising and a 5th cusp at 13°58' Aquarius. The Pluto crossings at 8°05' Aquarius that open Lotte's 6th house in 2028 and 2029 happen inside that person's 4th house, and mark no cusp at all.

The outer planets through each house

Uranus is read as change, disruption, independence and invention; Neptune as dissolving, idealising, sensitivity and confusion; Pluto as intensity, power, loss and renewal. In a house, each describes a long background theme. These are interpretive patterns, not predictions. In Placidus houses the 4th and 10th cusps are the IC and MC. Under the Equal-house fallback the free chart uses for birthplaces at an absolute latitude greater than 66°, the wheel's IC and MC labels mark the 4th and 10th cusps, which need not be the true IC and MC; chart angles at high latitudes explains why.

1st house

Uranus over the Ascendant is linked with changes in self-presentation and a stronger need for independence. Neptune here is described as a softer, less defined sense of self, more open to others' influence. Pluto is read as a slow, thorough remaking of how you come across.

2nd house

Uranus suggests irregular income, new ways of earning, or sudden shifts in what you value. Neptune is associated with blurred finances, generosity, or giving material security less importance. Pluto points to deep change in your relationship with money and self-worth.

3rd house

Uranus is linked with new ideas, new ways of communicating, and a less settled daily routine. Neptune is linked with imaginative writing and also with misunderstandings. Pluto is read as intense conversations, research, and changes in ties with siblings or neighbours.

4th house

Uranus crossing the 4th house cusp, the IC in Placidus charts, is associated with themes of moving, an unconventional household, or an unsettled home life. Neptune is described as idealising or blurring the sense of home and family. Pluto here is linked with family matters coming to the surface and rebuilding private foundations. Lotte had Pluto in this house for seventeen years.

5th house

Uranus is associated with the unexpected in romance and with a wish to take creative work in a new direction. Neptune is associated with artistic inspiration and with romantic idealising. Pluto is read as consuming creative work or intense attachments.

6th house

Uranus suggests changes of job routine or irregular working hours. Neptune is associated with unclear duties at work and with work that serves others. Pluto is linked with overhauling daily habits and the way work is organised.

7th house

Uranus over the Descendant is linked with unconventional partnerships and a need for space in close relationships. Neptune is described as idealising partners and seeing them less clearly. Pluto is read as intense partnerships and power within them.

8th house

Uranus suggests sudden changes in shared money or arrangements. Neptune is associated with confused joint finances and with a deep emotional or spiritual openness. Pluto here is linked with thorough change in intimacy, debt and what is held in common.

9th house

Uranus is linked with radical rethinking of belief or study, and with a restless wish to travel. Neptune is associated with spiritual searching and idealised beliefs. Pluto is read as a deep rethinking of what you hold to be true.

10th house

Uranus crossing the 10th house cusp, the MC in Placidus charts, is linked with themes of career change, independence in work, or an unconventional public role. Neptune is described as uncertainty about direction alongside inspiration in vocation. Pluto is read as ambition, power struggles at work, and a reshaped public role.

11th house

Uranus suggests new circles, changing friendships and group causes. Neptune is associated with idealistic groups and with disappointments in them. Pluto is linked with powerful alliances and a changing circle of influence.

12th house

Uranus here is associated with sudden insight from inner work and with unsettled sleep. Neptune is described as a strong pull toward retreat, imagination and spirituality. Pluto is read as long, deep inner work on what has been kept from view.

Checking your own outer-planet dates

Take your cusp longitudes and an outer-planet ephemeris in the Tropical zodiac. For each cusp, list every date the planet reaches it, not only the first. Whether a cusp is crossed once or several times depends on whether it falls inside one or more of the yearly retrograde loops, so compare it with the station longitudes. Pluto is shown on the free chart for births from 1885 to 2099, the range its calculation supports; the dates on this page all fall inside it.
