Lunar Node Transits Through the Houses: Both Ends of the Axis

Updated October 20, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

Your natal North and South Node sit in two opposite houses of your birth chart, a placement fixed at birth and described on pages such as South Node in the 10th house. The transiting Nodes are where that axis is now. It moves backward through the zodiac and through your natal houses, around the whole chart in about 18.6 years, always occupying two opposite houses at once. Astrologist.com has no transit tool, so the current Node positions are not drawn on your chart; this guide explains the technique so you can follow the transiting axis through your own houses.

For the method and the cusp rule, see transits through the houses. You need a reliable birth time and your twelve cusps as numbers, from how to find your house cusps.

How the Mean Node moves through the houses

Astrologist.com uses the Mean Lunar Node, a smoothed average position of the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Three facts follow from that choice.

  • It always moves backward, from later degrees to earlier ones, at an almost steady rate of about 0.053° a day. That backward motion is part of the definition, not a special condition, which is why the free chart puts no retrograde symbol on the Nodes. Mean Node vs True Node explains the two conventions.
  • It goes through the houses in reverse order: 10th, then 9th, then 8th. It enters a house across the far cusp, the cusp of the next house, and leaves across the house's own cusp. Under the rule used on these pages, a North Node exactly on a cusp is in the house that starts there; it leaves when its longitude drops below that cusp.
  • The South Node is always exactly opposite. In Placidus and in Equal houses, opposite cusps are exactly 180° apart, so both Nodes change house at the same moment, and they always sit in an opposite pair: 1st and 7th, 2nd and 8th, 3rd and 9th, 4th and 10th, 5th and 11th, 6th and 12th.

Because the speed barely changes and the Mean Node never turns direct, a Mean Node stay is set almost entirely by the width of the house. There are no repeat crossings. Sources using the True Node give dates that can differ by weeks, and the True Node's short direct spells can make it cross a cusp more than once.

One nodal cycle in one chart

Lotte is the fictional example used in these guides: Utrecht, 27 August 1991, 06:55 local time, Virgo rising, Placidus houses. The transiting Mean Node through her houses, calculated with the routines behind the free chart (Node positions to 0.01°, checked hourly, UTC dates):

North Node in South Node in From To Days House width
4th 10th 18 Nov 2010 14 Nov 2012 727 38.49°
3rd 9th 14 Nov 2012 25 Aug 2014 649 34.36°
2nd 8th 25 Aug 2014 11 Jan 2016 504 26.69°
1st 7th 11 Jan 2016 29 Jan 2017 384 20.34°
12th 6th 29 Jan 2017 16 Jun 2018 503 26.65°
11th 5th 16 Jun 2018 9 Mar 2020 632 33.47°
10th 4th 9 Mar 2020 6 Mar 2022 727 38.49°
9th 3rd 6 Mar 2022 15 Dec 2023 649 34.36°
8th 2nd 15 Dec 2023 2 May 2025 504 26.69°
7th 1st 2 May 2025 21 May 2026 384 20.34°
6th 12th 21 May 2026 6 Oct 2027 503 26.65°
5th 11th 6 Oct 2027 29 Jun 2029 632 33.47°

Days are the elapsed time between the hourly crossing times, counted in 24-hour days and rounded to the nearest whole day. Divide each width by 0.053 and you get close to the day count. The same pair of houses comes round again after about 18.6 years: the North Node entered her 10th house on 29 July 2001 and again on 9 March 2020.

From 29 June 2029 the South Node is in her 10th house again, with the North Node in her 4th.

The South Node transiting the 10th house

A transiting South Node in the 10th always means a transiting North Node in the 4th. The two are one reading. The 10th is career, public role and reputation; the 4th is home, family and private foundations. Astrologers often read this period as a time when established work patterns and public expectations feel familiar or tired, while home, family and inner security ask for new attention. Some describe stepping back from a visible role, or finding that what used to drive ambition no longer does.

The reverse arrangement, North Node in the 10th and South Node in the 4th, is usually read the other way round: the familiar pull of home and private life, and a direction toward public responsibility and work in the world. In Lotte's chart that ran from March 2020 to March 2022, and the South Node in the 10th from November 2010 to November 2012.

If you meant a natal South Node in the 10th, the placement you were born with, read South Node in the 10th house.

The six axes as transits

The transiting North Node is often read as the area where unfamiliar effort is asked for; the South Node as the area of established habits, skills to draw on, or patterns ready to be released. Both ends belong to one theme. These are reflective readings, not predictions.

1st and 7th houses

With the North Node in the 1st and the South Node in the 7th, the theme is acting more on your own judgement and relying less on a partner's lead. Reversed, with the North Node in the 7th, it is learning to work with others and the South Node in the 1st marks habits of going it alone. In Lotte's chart these were the shortest stays, about a year each, because these are her narrowest houses.

2nd and 8th houses

North Node in the 2nd, South Node in the 8th: building your own resources and values rather than depending on shared ones. Reversed: opening up to shared finances, intimacy and joint decisions, and loosening a tight hold on what is yours.

3rd and 9th houses

North Node in the 3rd, South Node in the 9th: asking questions, learning in detail, attending to the local and everyday, with less reliance on big beliefs. Reversed: widening the view through study, travel or a philosophy, and stepping beyond routine information.

4th and 10th houses

Covered above. These were the longest stays in Lotte's chart, about two years each, because they are her widest houses.

5th and 11th houses

North Node in the 5th, South Node in the 11th: personal creativity, play and romance, with less of the self given over to groups. Reversed: finding a place in communities and shared goals, and loosening the need for personal applause.

6th and 12th houses

North Node in the 6th, South Node in the 12th: practical routines, work and health habits, and less withdrawal into private worlds. Reversed: rest, reflection and inner work, with less attachment to keeping busy.

Checking your own nodal dates

  1. Confirm that your ephemeris lists the Mean Node, not the True Node, so its dates match the convention used on this site.
  2. Take your twelve cusp longitudes. Because the Node moves backward, find when it falls below each cusp, starting from the cusp it is approaching from above.
  3. The North Node's house changes and the South Node's house changes happen on the same day, so one list covers both.
  4. State the date to the day and the time standard used.

The Nodes' natal meaning is covered in North Node and South Node meaning, and finding your natal Nodes in how to find your North Node. For the slow planets on the same chart, see Uranus, Neptune and Pluto through the houses. Your natal Nodes are listed on the free birth chart as N.Node and S.Node.
