How to Read Transits Without a Transit Calculator

Many visitors ask for a transit calendar, Saturn-return timer or progressions module. Those features are not part of Astrologist.com today. Doctrine allows educational writing about techniques the software does not calculate, as long as the boundary stays explicit. This page is that boundary made practical.

You already have the essential half of transit work: a natal chart. Generate or reopen yours on the free birth chart page. Then compare moving planets from a trustworthy public ephemeris or another astrology app that clearly states its zodiac and house settings. Prefer Tropical zodiac sources so they match this site.

For what life-cycle contacts mean once you have dates, start with life-cycle transits overview and Saturn return.

Step 1: Lock the natal facts

Write down (or screenshot) at least:

  • Natal positions of the Sun, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto
  • Ascendant, MC and house cusps only if birth time is reliable
  • Major aspects to Saturn and the outer planets

If birth time is unknown, the free calculator withholds Rising and houses for good reason. Do not invent a noon Ascendant for transit-to-angle claims; noon and sunrise charts explains why those stand-in angles are not personal. Moon sign uncertainty on sign-change days should stay visible rather than ignored.

Methodology summary: Tropical, Placidus default, Equal houses from the Ascendant when absolute latitude is greater than 66°, Mean Node, flat major-aspect orbs. Details live on the methodology page.

Step 2: Match systems before you match degrees

A Tropical natal chart plus a Sidereal transit list will produce false alarms. Confirm:

  • Tropical versus Sidereal
  • Mean versus True Node if nodes matter to your question (this site uses Mean Node and does not treat the Node's inherent opposition as a chart aspect)
  • Whether the other tool uses the same five major aspects or adds minors this site does not calculate

Educational pages may discuss minors; the standard calculator does not detect them. Do not imply otherwise.

Step 3: Hunt a few high-value contacts

For life-cycle study, prioritize:

  • Saturn conjunct natal Saturn (return)
  • Jupiter conjunct natal Jupiter (return)
  • Uranus opposite natal Uranus
  • Neptune square natal Neptune; Pluto square natal Pluto
  • Slow planets crossing natal Sun, Moon, Ascendant or MC (timed charts)

Ignore the urge to interpret every Moon transit. How transits work and transit timing explain why slow contacts are commonly used for longer life chapters, while faster transits are usually read on shorter timescales.

Note retrograde stations. A single Saturn return can exact three times. List the dates without assuming each exact hit equals a separate crisis.

Step 4: Interpret with the usual grammar

Planet equals what. Sign equals how. House equals where (timed only). Aspect equals the type of conversation between moving and natal points. A transit does not erase natal condition. If natal Saturn squares the Moon, Saturn-to-Saturn returns still speak through that existing tension.

To place a transiting planet in a natal house by degree, see transits through the houses and how to find your house cusps.

Keep dual rulers straight: Scorpio (Pluto and Mars), Aquarius (Uranus and Saturn), Pisces (Neptune and Jupiter). Keep signs and houses separate. Prefer "may," "can," "often" over certainty.

Step 5: Cross-check life, then stop

Ask what is already true in your circumstances before assigning symbolic cause. Astrology here is a reflective language. It should not override medical, legal or financial advice from qualified humans.

If you want help thinking aloud about natal patterns while you hold transit dates from elsewhere, Ask the Astrologist can discuss the chart you calculated on this site. It cannot honestly pretend to be a transit engine.
