Saturn Opposition Saturn: The Halfway Point of the Saturn Cycle

Updated October 21, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

The Saturn opposition is the transit in which Saturn in the sky reaches the point directly across the zodiac from your natal Saturn, 180° away. It marks the halfway point between two Saturn returns. For most people the first one arrives in the early to mid teens, often around 14 or 15, and the second in the early to mid forties. A third, in the early seventies, is discussed less often. Those ages are orientation, not a schedule; the actual dates depend on your natal Saturn degree and on Saturn's retrograde loops at the time.

Astrologers often read the opposition as a point of maximum contrast in the cycle: what was started at the last return, or at birth, is now fully visible and may need balancing against what other people and circumstances ask for. That is a theme to reflect on. It does not predict a specific event.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com does not have a transit calculator, return chart, transit calendar or automated timing report, and the free birth chart is a natal chart only. The example dates on this page were produced by an offline calculation for this article, not by the site. For your own dates, compare natal Saturn from the free chart with a Tropical ephemeris.

Finding the opposition point

Take natal Saturn's longitude and add 180°, subtracting 360° if the result passes 360°. The opposition point has the same degree as natal Saturn in the opposite sign: natal Saturn at 14°43' Sagittarius has its opposition point at 14°43' Gemini.

The opposition sits between the two squares. The waxing square comes before it and the waning square after it; both are covered in Saturn square Saturn. In a full cycle the order is return, waxing square, opposition, waning square, return. The spacing between those steps is not even, because Saturn's speed varies along its orbit and the retrograde loops land differently in each part of the zodiac.

This is a transit: a moving position compared with a fixed natal one at a different date. It is not a natal aspect, and the natal calculator's aspect list does not show it.

How many exact hits

Saturn moves backwards for about four and a half months each year. If a retrograde loop happens near the opposition point, Saturn can cross the point, turn back across it and cross it again, giving three exact dates. If the loop happens elsewhere, there may be one. A loop can also turn round a fraction of a degree before or after the point, which is exactly where the count is most sensitive. There is no fixed number to expect, and the first and second oppositions of the same person often differ, as the example shows.

Worked example: an offline calculation

The birth is invented for this article. Saturn's position was computed offline with the ephemeris routines behind the Astrologist.com natal calculator; this is a one-off calculation, not a site feature.

  • Birth: 3 September 1987, 16:10, Haarlem. Dutch summer time (UT+2) was in force until 27 September that year, so the birth was at 14:10 UT.
  • Natal Saturn: 14°43' Sagittarius (254.72°), direct. Opposition point: 14°43' Gemini (74.72°).
  • Model and search: geocentric apparent Tropical longitude from the VSOP87B theory as implemented in the astronomia library, true equinox of date; Saturn sampled every 6 hours from age 1 to age 60, every crossing refined to under a minute, every station located. Dates are UT, rounded to the day.
Opposition Exact crossings (UT) Age
First 10 Sep 2001; 13 Oct 2001; 11 May 2002 14.0 to 14.7
Second 21 Jun 2031 43.8

First opposition. Saturn reached 14°43' Gemini on 10 September 2001, went on only about a quarter of a degree, to 14°58' Gemini, where it turned retrograde on 27 September, crossed back on 13 October, turned direct at 8°01' Gemini in February 2002 and crossed for the last time on 11 May 2002. Three hits spread over eight months, with the first two only five weeks apart.

Second opposition. One exact hit, on 21 June 2031. Yet Saturn was within 8° of the point in three separate stretches: 31 July to 11 November 2030, 18 April to 17 September 2031, and 23 October 2031 to 18 May 2032. It left the band in September 2031 because it moved more than 8° past the point before turning back, and its retrograde return brought it inside again without reaching the exact degree.

The inclusive 8° figure is the natal calculator's orb for oppositions, borrowed here only as an educational comparison. It is not an Astrologist.com rule for transits, and neither the exact dates nor the band entry and exit dates measure how long anything is felt.

Unknown birth time

With no birth time, the free chart uses local noon as a calculation reference, which is not your birth time, and it does not display Saturn's full range for the date. For this birth the noon reference gives 14°43' Sagittarius. Over the whole local date, 00:00 to 23:59 Haarlem time (22:00 UT on 2 September to 21:59 UT on 3 September), Saturn ran from 14°42' to 14°43' Sagittarius, moving steadily forward with no station inside the day.

Checking natal positions every 10 minutes across that date gave the same four exact hits in every case (three at the first opposition, one at the second) and moved no date by more than a day. Here the first loop turned about 0.25° past the opposition point, well beyond the 0.02° that Saturn covered on the birth date. Where a loop turns closer than the birth-date range, the number of hits itself can change with the birth time, so check the turning point against the full range before quoting a count. Ignore any Ascendant or houses produced by a guessed time.

Next to the Uranus opposition

The second Saturn opposition often lands in the same years as the Uranus opposition and the Neptune and Pluto midlife squares. In this example, the same offline calculation puts the Uranus opposition (transiting Uranus opposite natal Uranus at 22°43' Sagittarius) exact on 8 September 2030, 18 October 2030 and 9 June 2031, twelve days before the Saturn opposition. For someone born in another year the gap can be wider.

When they overlap, keep them as separate transits with separate dates. Astrologers usually contrast them: Saturn's opposition with questions of responsibility, limits and what has been built; Uranus's with the wish for change and independence. Read together, they may describe a period in which both themes are active. Neither of them, nor the two combined, is a compulsory midlife crisis.

How astrologers read the oppositions

  • First opposition. Usually discussed in hindsight. Astrologers who look at it tend to talk in general terms, such as noticing outside expectations more sharply in the teenage years. It does not predict anything about a teenager's life or say anything about how they were raised.
  • Second opposition. Often read as a midpoint review of the cycle that began with the first Saturn return: which commitments are still worth carrying, where duties to others and personal aims pull against each other, and which structures need rebalancing. No particular change is required by any age.

Natal Saturn's sign, aspects and, with a reliable birth time, its house colour these themes; the return pages, starting with what is a Saturn return?, show how.

Next steps

Get natal Saturn from the free birth chart, add 180°, and list every exact crossing from a Tropical ephemeris, checking around each station. The method is set out in how to read transits without a transit tool. The other new guides in this cluster cover the Chiron return and the nodal return.
