Jupiter Opposition Jupiter: The Halfway Review of Expansion

Updated October 21, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

In Jupiter opposition Jupiter, the moving Jupiter arrives at the degree exactly opposite your natal Jupiter, half the zodiac (180°) away. It is the far side of Jupiter's roughly twelve-year cycle, so it tends to land some six years on from a Jupiter return, with a similar gap to the return that follows. Roughly, the first falls around age six, then around eighteen, thirty, forty-two and so on, but each date is set by your natal degree and by Jupiter's retrograde loops, not by your birthday.

Astrologers usually read the opposition as a point of contrast: what you have been enlarging since the return is now seen from the other side, often through other people's views, and it invites a review of where expansion has gone and what it is for. That is a way of looking at the period, not a prediction. It does not promise good fortune, and it does not suggest that something has gone too far.

Educational guide: the site has no transit calculator and offers no return chart, transit calendar or automated timing report. What the free birth chart gives you is the natal chart. Dates in the example were worked out offline for this article only. To get yours, put your natal Jupiter next to a Tropical ephemeris.

Finding the opposition point

Take natal Jupiter's longitude and add 180°, subtracting 360° if needed. The result has the same degree in the opposite sign: natal Jupiter at 15°15' Aquarius has its opposition point at 15°15' Leo. The point lies between the waxing and waning squares, described in Jupiter square Jupiter.

It is halfway round the zodiac, which is not quite the same as halfway in time. Jupiter speeds up and slows down along its orbit, and each year or so it seems to back up for a third of a year as Earth overtakes it. Across 152 sample births (two per year, 1921 to 1996, noon UT), run through the same Jupiter code the site uses, the first exact opposition came between ages 5.0 and 6.4. In 119 of those charts it was exact once and in 33 it was exact three times. That first opposition falls in childhood and is mentioned only as arithmetic; the example below uses adult cycles.

The opposition separates the waxing half of the cycle from the waning half. Those labels describe phase only; they do not mean applying or separating, a distinction the Astrologist.com calculator does not make.

Worked example: two adult oppositions

An imaginary person, used only to show the method. Jupiter's places were generated offline by the routine that drives the site's natal chart.

  • Birth: 8 July 1985, 11:20, Ghent. Belgian summer time (UT+2) applied, so the birth was at 09:20 UT.
  • Natal Jupiter: 15°15' Aquarius (315.25°), retrograde.
  • Model: Jupiter's Earth-centred apparent longitude in the Tropical zodiac (equinox of date), from VSOP87B through the astronomia package, the same path the free chart takes.
  • Search window: 8 July 2008 to 8 July 2027, ages 23 to 42. Jupiter's longitude was sampled at 6-hour steps; crossings were bisected to within half a minute, and each turning point was pinned to roughly a minute and compared with the opposition point and the band edges. The fine bisection only locates the model's own crossing; it is not a claim of accuracy to the minute, which is why dates are quoted in UT and rounded to the day. Anything later than October 2026 is a forward calculation.
  • Cycle reference: each opposition is counted from the exact return that opened its cycle. Both returns in the search were exact once: 12 March 2009 (age 23.68) and 23 February 2021 (age 35.63).
Opposition Exact crossings (UT) Age Years after the return
First adult opposition 27 Sep 2014 (direct); 25 Feb 2015 (retrograde); 21 May 2015 (direct) 29.22 to 29.87 5.55 to 6.19
Next opposition 8 Sep 2026 (direct) 41.17 5.54

Reading the result. The same person had a three-pass opposition at 29 and a single-pass one at 41. In 2014 and 2015 a retrograde loop sat across the point: Jupiter turned retrograde on 8 December 2014 at 22°37' Leo and direct on 8 April 2015 at 12°35' Leo, so it crossed the point going forward, back and forward again. In 2026 to 2027 the loop turned direct on 13 April 2027 at 17°00' Leo, 1.7° short of crossing back, so there was only one exact date. Neither opposition came exactly six years after its return.

Exact dates and the 8° band

The 8° that the natal chart allows for an opposition appears here only as a teaching comparison. Transits have no orb rule on Astrologist.com, and neither a band nor an exact date is a measurement of how strongly or for how long a person notices anything.

Around the first opposition Jupiter was within 8° of the point in one unbroken stretch, 18 August 2014 to 9 July 2015, holding all three exact passes. That stretch was closer to splitting than it looks: the December 2014 turning point came 0.62° inside the far edge of the band. Around the 2026 opposition the band comes in two pieces, 2 August to 23 October 2026 and, calculated ahead, 1 February to 20 June 2027, with one exact date in the first.

A Saturn return nearby, calculated separately

For this person the first adult opposition fell close to the first Saturn return. Calculated separately with the same routines, natal Saturn at 21°42' Scorpio was returned to on 17 January, 17 April and 12 October 2014, so Jupiter's first opposition pass came about two weeks before Saturn's last return pass. That is a fact about this chart. Jupiter's cycle of about twelve years and Saturn's of about twenty-nine do not stay in step, so the two may fall years apart for someone else, and the 2026 opposition here comes without a Saturn return. The meanings stay separate too: the Saturn return is usually read in terms of structure and what can be sustained, the Jupiter opposition in terms of outlook and the reach of growth.

Without a birth time

A chart with no time is computed at local noon, which serves as a reference and is never presented as the moment of birth; no day-long range is shown. For this date the noon value (10:00 UT) is 15°15' Aquarius. Over the complete Ghent calendar day (22:00 UT on 7 July to 21:59 UT on 8 July) natal Jupiter slid back from 15°18' to 15°12' Aquarius, and Jupiter had no station within a month either side. Natal values taken at ten-minute steps through that day, plus its first and last minute, left the counts at three and one and shifted no date by a full day; the displayed 15°15' left every date unchanged. The Saturn return dates also kept their three passes and moved by under a day, although natal Saturn turned direct 17 days after this birth date, the kind of nearby station that makes a check worth doing. A guessed time supplies planets only, never a reliable Ascendant or house placement.

Interpreting the opposition

The reading starts from natal Jupiter: sign, house if the birth time is known, and aspects. The themes below are options to weigh, not outcomes.

  • Contrasting outlooks. Your own beliefs, plans or way of seeing things meet a different view, sometimes from a partner, colleague or teacher, and both become easier to see.
  • Reviewing expansion. If you began a course, project or change around the return, you might use the opposition as a prompt to review its scale and direction. The geometric halfway point does not establish a peak in real-life growth.

It does not guarantee luck, wealth or success, it says nothing about money or legal outcomes, and it does not imply excess. For how transiting Jupiter's house position works, see Jupiter transits through the houses.

Working out your opposition

  1. From the free birth chart, write down where natal Jupiter is, in degrees and sign.
  2. Add 180° (and take away 360° if you pass it).
  3. Look through a Tropical ephemeris for the days Jupiter stands on that point, with an eye on the turning points before and after, so three passes are not mistaken for one.
  4. Check whether your ephemeris is set to 00:00 UT or another time, and quote whole days.

Jupiter has no cut-off date in the site's natal calculator. Its positions have been tested against the Swiss Ephemeris in the code repository for 1920 to 2060, the years every date above falls in. Before 1920 or after 2060, get both the natal and the moving position from one outside ephemeris, using Earth-centred apparent Tropical longitude and a single time standard. A fuller walk-through is in transits without a transit tool; the Saturn equivalent is Saturn opposition Saturn. If you want to talk over natal Jupiter, Ask the Astrologist is there for that; bring the dates from your own ephemeris, as the chat does not produce them.
